Why is it so hard for SWAC coaches to teach fundamentals?

Actually, don't think physical fundamentals are the problem...it's mental fundamentals. Our coaches and fans are "big play" oriented and when enuff of those big plays don't happen, our coaches and fans start to press and panic. Nothing wrong with the deep ball, but I've set in the stands and heard our fans talk glowingly of the deep pass that was almost completed on 3rd and 4. NEWSFLASH: 3rd and 4 is not a deep passing down...that's a move the chains down.

When a Coach has the mindset to craft his offense to move the chain, control the pace of the game and put folks away with good sideline decisions, our fans tend to not like that brand of football. I like deep passing plays too...especially when they work. If you watch the good programs (offensive) those plays are usually most successful on 1st down. Maybe it's just me, but 2nd and 3rd down are infrequent passing downs for me and when done, it's to move the chain and pick up yardage in the short/quick game. Too bad, we often dismiss that as boring football... but I remember Eddie Rob piling up 408 wins with deep strikes on 1st down and moving the chains on 2nd and 3rd down. Somewhere along the line, we got away from that.

Because they are not required to do so. This has not just started in the swac and some other black colleges. When the universities start treating athletics like they are a business and hiring accordingly the results will be different. You can't hire someone just because they meet some of the black college requirements ( black, alumni, community ties, friend of current administrators or AD, etc). Then the coaches when hired do likewise. Next you have the recycling of coaches from school to school, with the same names popping up, if they showed little or no signs of excellence elsewhere what will be different now. I support the idea of hiring black coaches but I also support the idea of hiring the best qualified individual it would be a plus if that individual is black. So in short if you keep doing the same thing and expecting different results, then there you have it.

I've always said, once Southern started paying Pete over $200,000, we should have expected more from him as a coach. Once we realized Pete couldn't elevate our program to the next level, instead of giving him a contract extension, we should have done a mass solicitation of coaches capable of developing our program to the next level. The only way we can do that now, we would at least have to raise the new base salary to $275,000.
