Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degrees?

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

This is a great thread with valuable information. I will never forget growing up in rural Mississippi this lumber company that employed a lot of blacks hired this young white guy with no experience and paid him more than all the blacks. All the black men walked off the job and quit. Some of those older black men had been working their for 20+ years. One by one all of them went back to work their because they had no education and other job opportunities. All they could do was batch and moan.

I do understand what Jagfan is saying. I have come to realize that I, like many of my friends do suffer from a bit of inferiority complex. As much as I want to believe I don’t, I do and I consider myself to be a very self-confident person. Two weeks ago, I had an interview in which my background, experience and knowledge was the perfect fit for. However, I still wondered would my race be a hindrance in that room and I found myself altering some of responses, behavior because my interviewers were all of different races and I wanted to make myself appear less threatening.
Furthermore, with my consulting rates, I tend to undercharge people because I have been scared of losing their business even though I have been told that I do good work over and over again. A big part of that has to do with undervalueing the quality of my work because of race. When Buck posted that GSA loaded labor rate schedule two days ago, I made a firm decision to up my rates and I am going to stick with my rates. I researched market prices in the area as well as the quality of their work and I believe that my work is just as good.

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

I hear what you are saying, but that 10% of rich White families are the main reason why there's an income disparity between Blacks and Whites in Small Town USA. When it comes to employment, who do you think they would hire first, a poor White or a poor Black? The only way Blacks can take control of the economy in their home town, they would have to wrestle control of the land out of the hands of the rich White families, which is just the first step to controlling their own destiny.

Perhaps, but you're not comparing uneducated whites to educated Blacks. You're comparing uneducated whites to uneducated Blacks. That's a whole 'nother ball of wax and of course racism is involved in the scenario you gave.

However, uneducated whites and educated Blacks are generally not competing for the same jobs. If you wanted to compare them, the comparison would be on the basis of net worth and standard of living. Whatever differences there are between the net worth and standard of living of the two groups can be overcome despite any racism.

I just don't see this high rate of success for whites in small towns.

I've seen it in my hometown of Pontotoc, MS. Some of them are making money hand over fist with the factories in the area. Some of those guys continue to get those loans to stay in business.

You know what though, Pop? You are one of those bad dudes I was talking about.

You've aggressively pursued your education. Aggressively pursuing your career - moving up the ladder. Have a side business that you're building. You're investing. Have a wife that's working with you to succeed also.

You're unstoppable.

When it comes to achieving the net worth and standard of living that the average white person has - educated or uneducated - there is nothing they can do to stop you. They can think what they want, say what they want ... even do things to try to hinder you ... in the final analysis there is nothing they can do to keep you from reaching that net worth figure. You can have the home, car, retirement accounts, college savings for your kids and anything else they may have.

You just have to stay focused and be strong. Be humble, but be strong. Like I said, maybe that's our destiny - to be strong. Some of y'all might know a little something about that ....

BE STRONG
We are not here to play, dream or drift
We have hard work to do and loads to lift
Shun not the struggle for it is God's gift
Be strong!

God's gift, brothers. Not something to complain about. God's gift.

All of you are more powerful than you know. Let's not worry about what other people have or how they got it. Let's focus on getting ours.

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

Perhaps it's because you're in denial. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at who holds power in most small town U.S. A. where populations are mixed. The numbers don't lie. We gave you several examples of how White folks with lesser education have overwhelming advantages over Black folks who actually have to answer to them.
How many times in small town factories have White folks just graduating from high school been given higher positions of authority and higher pay over Black folks just because their dad knows somebody? It's called the "good ole boy" system. I'm sure you've heard of that.

I'll go one step further. How many times have Black males/females, with EQUAL education than White folks been given lower salaries than White males? I ask you to address this matter. Is it racism, the good ole boy system or a "woe is us mentally by Black folks" that White males are routinely given higher salaries when education levels are similar?

Truth! We would be surprised at the salaries they are making coming out of college. Even the salaries of thise that have been working in the same field as we are in. They make more in most cases because of the 'good ole boy' hookup.

For most of us, the are no uneducated white people - or any other uneducated people - competing for our jobs.

And the business owners in Pontotoc, Mississippi are a small percentage of the population. The other white folks have jobs and are not doing any better than you.

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

The problem with you people is that you all have a deep-seated inferiority complex. Y'all actually believe you're inferior to other people. You won't say it, but your thoughts and actions prove that you believe you're inferior.

That was the whole purpose of racism and segregation. To make you folks believe you were inferior. Whether you actually were inferior or not. And it has worked wonderfully on you guys.

Not only do you "know" you're inferior, you "know" who is responsible and you "know" you're helpless to do anything about it.

You guys have been thoroughly brainwashed.

So sad. :shame:

Dude, it's just the opposite. If we had an inferiority complex, we wouldn't be realizing the fact that we're being discriminated against in the workplace inspite of our education.
Any person with an inferiority complex would be agreeing with those same folks who claim that things are fine and there's no racism or prejudice in the workplace and that Black folks should quit complaining.
Your definition of "inferiority complex" is highly distorted and contradictory.

Besides, during segregation, Black communities were thriving, Black folks were succeeding inspite of Jim Crow in the South, Black families were intact, Black businesses were thriving and the Black crime rate in our neighborhoods were at an all time low.

Segregation doesn't mean inferiority except in the minds of those who forgot how successful Black folks were becoming inspite of Blacks starting the race late in the game.
Segregation was initially created as a tool to try and keep Black folks down, but it backfired, thus we have desegregation.

How many of these examples given are a small percentage of the population? You keep saying that each time an example is given and shrugging it off with excuses.

I keep saying it in situations where it is true. There are only a few people who own lots of acreage. Most people don't own businesses. White, Black or other.

And I'll continue to say it.

Before desegregation and civil rights laws, are you saying Black folks owned most of the land, had most of the old South money stored away in hidden bank accounts? I think not.

As a matter of fact, most properties that was owned, was overwhelmingly owned by White folks.
Much of the land that was owned by Black folks, before interstate highways began growing through the heart of inner cities, was literally taken away by the state/federal government through eminent domain laws.
This is another reason many Black owned businesses and communities went under.
I won't even mention the unfair loaning practices that was heaped upon Black folks, low rates to Whites while high APR rates were thrust upon Black folks.

With all that said, there are ways to overcome these obstacles but lets not ignore the many hurdles and obstacles Black folks had to deal with nationwide in order to become successful.

Okay, JayRob.

Black folks don't have business because highways went through our community.

And ... yeah ... things were great during segregation! Just peachy.

I would ask where you get this ignorant shit, but you're JayRob. No need to ask that question.

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

It's not only institutionalize racism, but it is also inherited racism. Take a place like Lake Providence, LA in East Carroll Parish. Although the town and the parish are majority Black, White folks have owned most of the land since the days of slavery, which is the main reason why that place has the highest income disparity between Blacks and Whites in the country. What SUJagFan does not seem to realize is that a lot of White folks in this country were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and they are not about to give up the advantages they acquired from there ancestors racist past to allow Blacks to gain equal footing.

To get back on topic and answer your question, racism and white privilege. Redlining, institutional racism, unjust justice system, and access to credit are just a few things to come to mind.

It's definitely multifaceted.....

Again here is the topic. :emlaugh:

"Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree....But African Americans in most cases are expected to have a degree and perfect credit to get loans, etc."

Meh. Let's shoot this topic in the head - whatever it is. Let's just agree that y'all ain't shit ... ain't ever going to be shit ... because white folks are racist. Seems like everybody agrees with that. Except me. So, I'll just bow out and let y'all wallow in your misery.

If you have to ask where I got it from, that in and of itself shows how ignorant you are. You mean to tell me that you didn't know that the state and federal government intentionally destroyed whole Black communities using the excuse of eminent domain?
See folks, this is why some should leave some subjects alone due to lack of knowledge and information.

So because folks are pointing out valid reasons as to why Black folks are in this predicament, it means that we don't have any solutions and are doomed to failure?
Seems that you not only lack knowledge of Black history, you've underestimated the fight Black people have within them INSPITE of the unjust history of racism.
Seems like you're really afraid for folks to even talk about the terrible history of White folks. I wonder why.
Heck, they talk about our history all the time. They keep records on us starting at birth, but we can't keep a record on them and their history?! Please!!!

Re: Why is it easy for Caucasians in small towns and cities to succeed without degree

there is a pervasive inferiority complex as SU alluded to...its inherent and so deeply rooted, many refuse to recognize it and now the oppressed pass it along so the oppressors don't have to do much besides look at us. :Many will decry it but its there.

Solutions: Encourage more blacks to OWN THEIR OWN STUFF-esp businesses...economics are a great levellng field....;create and live from a ;position of some real power. There is an already entrenched buddy system...but the smart thing? Creating your own. It can be done if we don't want to come out of college a;nd living in 4000 sf; with a brand new foreign car and kenneth cole underwear...

Solutions.

Doing what's best for us and not letting anybody stop us. That's all I'm promoting.

Pointing out blatant institutional racism and having an inferiority complex are two separate things. In that case, one can say a person has an inferiority complex when they choose to ignore blatant racism. IMO, when one choose to ignore blatant racism so it doesn't seem like they have an inferiority complex, they have allowed reverse psychology to alter the way they think. Basically, the keep your mouth closed syndrome so that the status quo shall remain intact.

You sound like a new kind of fool and "sir" from the Color Purple. :emlaugh: Uncle Toms take the opportunity to bash their own when it's not necessary and a moot point. You understand the topic but the self hate (and ignorance) is your issue.

You're trying too hard.

The was no "Sir" character in The Color Purple.

Mister was no Uncle Tom. He may have been abusive to his wife and in love with a woman he couldn't have, but he was no Uncle Tom. The way you're attempting to use the term, I'm not sure you even know what an Uncle Tom is.

Get your movies and movie characters right before you try to come at me, boy.

Y'all aren't talking about anything.

To this point, not a single one of you has definitively shown that whites without degrees are more successful than Blacks with degrees.

It's just another opportunity for y'all to "point out racism" as was said in another thread.
