Black colleges struggle to stay on level playing field in athletics

By Josh Moon

Not long ago, historically black colleges and universities were filled with future professional athletes and fielded some of the most talented teams in the country.

Today, most of those black athletes are being lured by colleges that have bigger budgets, more television exposure and more competitive programs. From 1967 to 1996, black colleges and universities sent 734 players to the NFL -- an average of about 25 per year. In the early 1980s, Jackson State alone had nearly 30 baseball players taken in the Major League draft. And there was rarely a United States Olympic team without at least one black college or university athlete.

That's no longer true.

"They haven't funded the athletic departments and have made poor decisions in hiring. The thing none of them realize is how much money could be saved and made if they had simply spent the money on the front end to hire quality people to run these departments."

This article has all of the points that were discussed on this board.

"Let's say that Jackson State decides to do this, puts the required money into athletics, hires the people necessary to do a good job at that level and begins to pull away from the rest of the conference. The rest of the SWAC will follow."

So even in Montgomery they know whats about to happen. It's all about facilities JSU is putting money in there's . If you can get the athletes to come to campus and you got nice things they will eventually sign

ECONOMICS

When our alumni start owning profitable corporation, we will start to get top athletes again.

yeah and we start PUMPING MONEY into HBCUs, being big booster/doners, that's when we will compete again. one thing for sure, we are not going to be able to depend on the state or federal government to put us on an even playing field with PWCs, although I can guarantee you a black legislator will propose such legislation.

IN THE 2000's SU has had nearly 30 baseball Players taken in the MLB draft. AND we still have 3 more drafts to add to that number.

1. WE need to lose the loser/ we can't compete mentality.
2. Some schools must restore the pride, back into their program. SOme schools still have the pride.

I have been saying this for years. The main difference between those schools and our schools is that their alumni are more likely on average to own successful businesses while most of our graduates tend to seek getting a job.

We must take care of our own and not even give others a chance to do so. 94% of sports are dominated by African American Athletes. It's up to us to make progress. If we did what we were suppose to do financially and hired the right people into the right positions, we could have the facilities to attract the top black athletes and completely dominate in the sports industry. There's no reason our kids should feel as if they have to go to a PWC to make it to the next level. They have the big names but its only because we laid down and gave them to them.

"hire" the best folks....you can have trillion dollar facilities but a bafoon can still drive the program into the ground....

Not only "hire" the best folks, but when you hire them, allow them to actually do the job you hired them to do.

I agree with both quotes.

I agree. If our schools kept the amount of athletic talent that they had in the '70s, we would be a much better situation.

Heck the reason HBCU's can't compete is because we spend all our time making excuses on why we keep getting our arses kicked instead of actually doing something about it.

It's easier to compain or come up with excuses than working to make it better.

Hunting for R.L. Horton...

The race to recruit R.L. Horton is now between essentially two teams ? Southern Miss and Jackson State. I talked to R.L. last night and he said he was "leaning toward Southern Miss" because of the reasons one would expect: Bigger conference, bigger name coach and a young group of talented players (especially Jeremy Wise)...

I've never met USM coach Larry Eustachy, but I've been told by several people that he's a very good recruiter. JSU still has a decent chance to land R.L., but I'm not sure if the Tigers are the frontrunner anymore. Arkansas is also trying to make a late push, but R.L didn't sound that interested in the Hogs. He said he hopes to make a decision over the next few days...

JSU still has a strong possibility to land R L, but the talent level isn't going to get any better in the SWAC. I guess all the young man had to do was take one look at the conference website for proof. "Bigger conference, bigger name coach and a young group of talented players (especially Jeremy Wise)..."

can't help but massive co-sign here.

Why do we have to wait on that? Obama raised millions with the majority of the donations being $100 or less.

Thats all it takes 100 at a time. We also need to raise ticket prices!!! have you noticed that everything has gone up except our ticket prices( wages, gas, water, electric)?? if we are still making money at our games, we are sure making a lot less then 10 yrs ago...
