Why Do "We" Leave After Halftime

even if the game is competitive? Why? People go clubs hours after it opens so beating the line is a myth, traffic? come on

Was this always a tradition in HBCU land that has took place since the 30s? Help me out.
 
This is not the behavior of early HBCU tradition. It is just something that has evolved over time for those persons for whom the game is merely a social event on the agenda of that day. These people care little about the game, the schools represented, etc. They are there for a prescribed time and then off to the next event.
 



And this not only revolves around clubs, traffic. etc. I've saw it happen at Valley, AAMU, TSU and JSU homecomings which are usually in mid-day so that's not an excuse, especially at Valley when it comes to traffic. People usually walk around campus all day and socialize until the Greek show that night so leaving early for those reasons makes no sense.
 
yep fake asss fans not interested in the game. just trying to be seen. smh and its sad bc some good guys really come down to the last minute like the su/jsu game last year.
 
Let's be honest, the young kids do this type of stuff. Why do they do it? Because they are young, in college and having a good azz time. Our counter parts don't do it because they basically can get drunk in the stadiums and do ignant stuff and it is considered traditional. Leave those kids alone and let them be young and enjoy life. Your old azz did!!!

Cee, all of us aint 50 dog. It is some 20 somethings in here that actually enjoy watching sports.
 
In my undergrad days, I ONLY left if it was a blowout (and only THEN because the significant other wouldn't want to stay and would make the experience horrible if I wanted to stay). I knew it wasn't gonna be long before she was NOT the significant other.

I remember preparing to cover my first JSU football game at Memorial, and so I ask my editor what should I do about food for halftime. I told him, "I don't want to miss the start of the second half waiting in long lines for food."

He was like, "Don't worry, nobody is going to be at the concession stands during halftime. They are all going to watching the halftime show. When halftime is over, then folks will be at the concession stands or leave the game."

"So, I'm like yeah, right."

Halftime comes, and I go down from the press box to the concession stands. I see maybe like a handful of people in lines. I buy food and go back to the press box. Halftime is over and I see a third of seat emptying. A lot of those people who left never came back either.

It was a rather interesting experience to say the least.
 
I don't leave. I stay sometimes until after 5thQ (if there is one). I'm in the stadium no later than an hour before kick-off and don't leave until zeros are across the scoreboard.

The fans who leave after halftime are there only for halftime and not football.

The games are so boring now, why should they stay past halftime?

Depends when I was younger JSU game in the 90's were a boderline fashion show...I see more people my age rocking JSU para at the games and SU and Gram are usually good a repping as far as wearing school colors....cant speak for other schools

And folks who leave after halftime for 3 reasons: they either only wanted to see the band, or its either a blowout or the football team sucks...

I don't have a significant other, but I would stay EVEN if it was a blowout. I'll NEVER forget that damn game when Southern beat the living dog isht out of us 57-3 and that man turned to us and said, "Ya gettin' ya ass beat; ya might as well come on down here and eat somethin'"! I remember Jackson State head-kicked us 44-0 in the pouring rain. I remember that God-awful game in Itta Bena when some jackass moved the game to 1:00PM; I stayed the entire time. I remember Alabama A&M skull-dragging us 51-0......each game I was there until the very end.
 
I'm with Cee on this one. I used to be one of those folks who would be befuddled as to why folks left games early or didn't wear school colors.

I mean, collegiate athletics, just like pro athletics, is entertainment and people can use their entertainment dollars as they see fit and have whatever experience they want.

Back in the day there was no such thing as fans wearing school or team colors to sporting events. Men wore suits or dress shirts with ties accompanied by slacks and sometimes fedoras. Women wore what is equivalent to today's Sunday best.

When the suits realized that money could be made by selling school/team apparel, that's when we started to see more folks wearing the stuff.

And just because you decide to stay for the whole game, even if it is a blowout, doesn't make you a better fan than someone who doesn't stay all four quarters or chooses not to don color coordinated school attire.

You get no extra brownie points for that.

I stop trying to figure that bullsh@t out. It didn't makes since then or now. You can't use the game being sorry as an excuse because JSU was kicking everybody's azz back then. I just can't grasp the concept of a sporting event being a social event.
 
...its a bunch of reasons why I leave, lets see.

The halftime show is over.
The tailgate party is still going on and everybody out there, gotta get back
To get some more liquor.
Boring as game.
The team blowing some other team out, or they losing like hell.
People watch.
To holla at folks I aint seen in a minute.
To go to another game.
Its cold, hot, or raining.
'cause I want too.

I leave when the bands leave, so I rarely EVER leave before a game is over. And those who ride with me know I'm not moving until the 5th quarter is over.

The only thing that would make me leave a game early is if it's pouring down raining and I got my son with me. And that's not likely to happen, because I wouldn't take my son to an outdoor sporting event, if I know the weather is going to be bad and risk him getting sick.

....I'm like you, and on that band tip.

But there have been many occasions where I have left because of the reasons mentioned. And if the visiting band is a no-show? oh I know I'm leaving, I can do something else lol! It dont bother me when folks leave. It is a part of our culture, thats how we get down ~shrugs~
