Why did power football die so soon?

Panther it is a double edge sword.. I grew up on POWER SMASHMOUTH BLOODY-KNUCKLE FOOTBALL.... But we were rougher and tougher as kids growing up so we could play that style and not worry about nothing.. Plus the coaches have changed.. We were all raised at home and or in school by military men... Or Men from the civil rights era.. That was a different type of thought process on how to be tough... These kids now a days are not as TOUGH as we were.. Maybe bigger faster stronger, but NOT TOUGHER...

Now from an X and O standpoint the game is no longer a war of attrition... Its faster... When a coach plays slow pounding football the fans bark, criticize, and howl... Look at Rod Broadway, Henry Frazier, Anthony Jones. That get cursed for winning in a different way... But on the flip side, we say a Melvin Spears throws too much.. WTH... If you are gonna play slow physical football then you have to score everytime you have the ball... Nothing worse than a 10-15 play drive that comes out empty... I hate that...

And yes you got to have some brutes up front that will maul from whistle to wistle

He does, especially in the redzone.

FYI Oregon is about 70/30 run/pass. They just snap the ball 10 seconds after the deadball whistle.

Sped up the game to throw the defense off-balance. :noidea:

The game has simply evolved. The defenses adapted to the smash-mouth offenses. The the offenses readapted to the new faster defenses.

The game will continue to evolve. Although I do miss watching a team line up and run the wishbone all game ....

Check out 1:09 and 5:35. Just a thing of beauty.

I'm prejudiced. :( I'm sold on the quick-hitter (fback up the middle), quick blocks/traps up the middle to freeze the ILBers/Safeties, and then hitting the edge. I'm prejudiced to that type of scheme because there is so much self responsibility in the game. If any ONE person jacks up/doesn't do their job, then it doesn't work too well OR someone misses the tackle. Checkout some of the clips. The WRs on offense have to block VERY well along w/ the fback/leading RB who doesn't have the ball in order for the pitchman to effectively run the ball. The QB HAS to make a solid read on the DE to determine if he pitches or tucks.

On defense, if the DE shirks his responsibility (QB ONLY), he's toast. If the CB doesn't come up to make a tackle on the offside RB, he's toast. If the safety doesn't come up and @ least take the RB, he's toast because he just may be assed out if the RB gets a pitch later on downfield.

empty, SUJF, MB, and others are right kendrick. Todays kids are a little bit different from the rest of us who were up in your face types. If they're spending time in the weightroom, I'm not seeing it too much lately. They're testing early now for "performance enhancing drugs lol" so JH, I think you're on point. Anthony Jones, Monte Coleman (did y'all notice lately? :read: ), Broadway, and Frazier's preferred offenses were/are a thing of beauty to witness.

Why? Because it's not as easy to score and win a game when the other team is putting up 50 points on you. The spread doesn't really require a great QB but if you have fast athletes it's easy to win. The only team that was able to hang on to that for a while was USC and even now I think it'll be a while before they could beat Oregon again if they stick to a pro style offense. Nebraska tried, but they'll never win the Big 10 if they stick with it.

Checkout what happens from 00:00 to 01:54. GaSouthern was putting on a clinic offensively. Pay close attention to the commitment made by the TEs, WRs, and OL(downfield blocking). :read:

What he is trying to say, "boy kids today are too sensitive". And for whatever reasons, a lot of boy kids today want to be like little girls.

I don't consider an option offense to be "power" football. It is 99% run oriented, but based on alot of cut blocks and misdirection. You don't need big linemen to run the option. They need to be quick and disciplined. Power football is Alabama and Wisconsin now. Texas with Ricky Williams. USC with OJ/Marcus Allen/Charles White.

Kinda True... But Nebraska had a ton of power running plays when they were steamrolling people

LSU will run it at you and dare you to stop it too. I know some of you all hate hearing that. :emlaugh:

Yep, and that's why Bama and LSU will continue to dominate the SEC. They're the most consistent teams.

They are the only teams that consistently have the OLs to run at people and dare them to stop it. And the DLs to stop it.

Hello. THAT is where it starts and ends. Again, goes back to physicality and strength. :read:

TX, ATM, OK, Ohio St, MI, NE, and other powers use to run a power attack. They do not appear to have problems recruiting big athletic linemen. The question is why did they drop a proven successful attack and move to a more wide open system? I know this question is coming back to your initial post.

The wide receivers and chance of pace backs started going elsewhere...

This is true. LSU has always kept a stable of RB's.

LSU OL have two freshmen starters returning (Bull and Dozer). It will be reall scary if they have gotten any stronger. :emlaugh: (I am disappointed about the freshman RB (Hill) that is in trouble though. That kid is gifted.

To answer the question, one just simply has to visit the Florida Gators message board and click on any topic brought up about their season outlook or offense.

Most people would look at the high-flying passing attack during the Spurrier days, but his most successful teams were the ones that had a strong, power back (Fred Taylor, Ernest Graham) that could keep teams honest. Then one would look at the Urban Meyer teams and see a dynamic spread offense that carved up the SEC, but it wasn't a finesse attack like you see with West Virginia or Oregon, Florida would run the ball right down your throat with power, spread you out so their fast WRs and RBs could hit some homeruns, and just when you thought you had them contained, would blow by you and throw it downfield. Those were some creative offenses, and offense coupled with winning sells tickets.

Now Florida has seen a decrease in attendance, and many fans are really upset about Muschamp's offensive philosophy of smashmouth football. Now you have Florida running 80% of the time and scratching out wins with 10 points. Florida had an 11-win season last year, yet you will find very few people that were really excited about the team last season. lol

People today want to see creative, high scoring offenses. Alabama is the exception to the rule because while they will run the ball down your throat, they are able to also throw the ball all over the field as well.

Ok, so you want a cookie for winning 1 out of the last 3 match ups? :emlaugh:

Come on now LSU had one blowout win last year against the worst Florida team since the 80s and had a fluke win the year before. Not going to talk about the numerous Florida wins over LSU through the last 2 decades. lol

You do know LSU is going to wax Florida's azz in Tiger Stadium next year right? :emlaugh:

I don't think so. If they do win, it will be close and will be because Driskel can't throw to save his life.

If it's at night it will be a 28 point blow out. Florida will have problems this year stopping LSU offense. If they move the game to a 2:30 kick off for CBS I will go with LSU and 14. Les is down in BR raising holy hell about his marriage with Florida and Alabama's easy go at it with Tennessee. Next year LSU has Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Texas A&M which are arguably the 4 strongest opponents in the SEC that they can play. :emlaugh: The Mad Hatter is losing his hat about this scheduling thing. :emlaugh:

Florida, unlike the other schools, does well playing at LSU. Don't let 2011 cloud your judgement. LSU might win, but it won't be a blowout at all. Muschamp has too much riding on this season to let that happen. lol

Also, tell Les Miles to stop whining. Florida has to play at South Carolina, at LSU, vs. Georgia, coupled with OOC games against Miami and Florida State. Tennessee was a powerhouse and Alabama was a mediocre team when the SEC made this schedule decision.
