GRAMBLING - Grambling State hit the field for a morning workout Saturday as the Tigers get ready for their season opener Aug. 31 with a 7 p.m. contest at McNeese State.

One area the GSU coaching staff looked at Saturday is the Tigers' running game, which returns only one experienced player.

Junior Karrell Charles (5-9, 190) of Breaux Bridge picked up 43 yards on three carries and pulled down a 19-yard reception. Redshirt freshman Lindsey Sanders (5-10, 190) of Baker was an outstanding high school back and looked strong in GSU's Spring Black and Gold Game with 95 yards on seven carries.

"We're just looking for someone to step up and take over," GSU coach Doug Williams said. "We have some potential back there. It's a pretty good mix of styles."

While Charles and Sanders are the slashers, the Tigers have a bruiser in the making as sophomore Gideon Leonard (6-1, 250) of Grand Prairie, Texas, shows promise. Freshman Michael O'ree (6-0, 230) of Bogalusa is another big back fighting for playing time.

Grambling also has a speedy scatback garnering some notice as freshman Henry Tolbert (5-9, 180) of Birmingham, Ala., has shown impressive speed and moves
