Where's the buzz over UConn women's winning streak?

Take one of the most iconic winning streaks in sports. Make sure it has been around for decades and that it was achieved by male athletes. Now watch a women's team try to break it, and listen to the reaction:

It'll always be a women's record, not the real record.
UConn and UCLA are apples and oranges. You can't compare them.
They don't play the same game.

You name the excuse and it's certain to be attached to the Connecticut women's basketball team.

On second thought, let's not, because it would be no contest. If a men's team were in UConn's position, going for its 88th consecutive victory, coverage likely already would have reached the saturation point with countdown clocks, hour-long specials and grainy retrospectives.

Haven't heard any of those remarks? That's because you probably haven't heard much of anything about UConn closing in on UCLA's streak yet.

It's impressive and they deserve their props for being able to win 88 in a row... the knock on it I would is that women's basketball is too top heavy at this point (with their really only being about 2-4 teams every year (and those usually being the same teams)) for it to be compared to the men's streak.

Plus as someone said...sad to say, but its a woman's sport lol. College basketball and softball are the two biggest women's sports in the country. The WNBA might be #3

The same as the buzz for all womens sports in this country. It is met with congrats and a yarn.
Sorry but that is the way it is no matter how great the accomplishment is. And UCONNs accomplishment is great I'll admit.

If UCONN beats the record of the team from "AAU" record listed in the article below, then they'll start pulling records from High School and Middle Schools - this is sad. NCAA didn't even sponsor Women BBALL in 1950s.

The head coach of the team with the longest winning streak in women’s college basketball history is impressed with the University of Connecticut Huskies.

Of course, Geno Auriemma likes the Huskies. They are his team, and his squad, the two-time defending NCAA champion, won its 89th consecutive game with Tuesday night’s 93-62 win over Florida State.

But we’re not talking about Auriemma.

Auriemma was a toddler in Italy when the head coach of the team with the longest winning streak in women’s college basketball history took over a job that would take him from West Texas obscurity to national prominence and several sports hall of fames.

Harley Redin led Wayland Baptist University to the final 76 wins of its record 131 straight victories from 1953-58, claiming four straight AAU national championships along the way.

Really, who pays attention to women's sports.

I do. Since they're most apt to actually listen and have an inner capability to learn @ a better clip overall :swink:, I enjoy watching them execute flawlessly and do their thing. I'll bet a dime to a dollar you could take any one of those basketball players on UConn's team and she'll out-hustle, outrebound, shoot FTs @ a higher % lol, andshoot 3pt/2pt FGs @ a higher % than her male counterparts.

I doubt any female in the WNBA can outrebound Dwight Howard. To be honest, I just don't really care for basketball anymore. The game is too soft now. They call touch fouls in the lane. They have made the sport powderpuff so that these weak arse European big men can compete.

All ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ very true words. She could teach a lot of dudes the game of basketball and how it was meant to be played.

Please, Maya Moore will get ran by any male college basketball player in the country. Let's not get too big for our britches now.

Agreed.

I haven't watched a regular season NBA game in about three years. I may catch a few playoff games and the finals. But, I'm just not interested anymore.

I think the NBA is better than it has been in recent years. The talent pool is deep. The teams are much better, and the games are quite interesting.

The game has went soft. The refs are too involved.

If you like NHL-style clutching a grabbing that the Miami Heat, Knicks, Sixers, Pistons and Cavs once pulled during the 80s and 90s, then so be it. But I like to see the athletes use their skills on the floor.

Watch a college mens team other than Duke :emlaugh: and watch UCONN women or Duke women. :read:

Please, pay close attention to the laziness and lack of effort going after rebounds, FT%, and FG%. :) I'm not advocating a woman could compete w/ a male. For each on their own court, I think women outplay men. They learn @ a much better clip because they're more apt to LISTEN and then EXECUTE what's required. :read:

You rushed home to see Jordan play in the 1990s on WGN....even bought pay per view when the local team would play the Bulls just to see him

I can miss 82 men's hoop games now and I'm satisfied

You're right. Women do play better fundamental basketball than men.

It's still boring though. I'd rather watch paint dry.

When I did watch women's basketball, I used to just watch their titties bounce as they ran up and down the court. Didn't pay attention to the game. Just watched the titties bounce. :(

But watching the NBA is a superior experience, at least for me, and I know that's the minority opinion. The level of play is just so much better. And part of that "not playing hard" is that they make it look a hundred times easier than the college guys out there. They can actually chew gum and dribble 94-feet without falling all over the place. They can break a press without making it look like some monumental achievement.

Put it this way: The difference between watching the pros compared to college is just about as big as watching college men compared to college women. The ball-handling, shooting, passing, defense, and coaching are so much better that it's jolting watching a college game and NBA one in the same day.

Well, there are teams that shoot poorly, commit a lot of turnovers, play lazy and porous defense, deliver lackadaisical and inconsistent effort, play selfishly and stupidly, at every level of basketball from kindergarten biddy basketball up through the NBA and the Olympics.

Ummmmmmmm kendrick, not every player in the non-ballers association can shoot a 12 footer consistently. :lmao: :emlaugh: All the nba has is "de dunk." Period. :smh: At least the euros brought some semblance of team play coupled w/ good shooting from 12+ ft out. :shame: Amare, KG, and Bosh are overly impressive to me. And no, I'm not saying Rose and Kobe along w/ others aren't. Look @ their D, D-rebounding, O-rebounding, O-rep, help out D, hustle, etc... Amare, KG, and Bosh are just on another level and don't take off on many plays, from what I can tell.

The Women's game has gotten a little more physical over the years, I can give them that. I like hard fouls in the paint and true battles for rebounds.

I just hope the euros don't start ruining women's basketball too.

That about sums it up.

I don't know about you guys, but all this backlash toward the NBA I believe has a lot to do with the large presence of young, tattooed outspoken black athletes. All these references to street ball, dunking and And 1 can be construed as racially charged assessments of the pro game.
