Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else?

Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else in life?

I heard this on the Micheal Basdien show and thought it was interesting. Sometimes I wish I had left the south and stayed in the Midwest when I was younger just because of the more options you have. How about you? Is there areas you would suggest to move or not move for any particular reason?

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

I have always thought of Detroit, Birmingham and Memphis as last resort places to live. They just seem like dead end cities. Although I will say I had some great times in Detroit, Flint and Saginaw back in the early 90's. :emlaugh:

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

Anywhere north of Dallas Tx is too far north. Too cold for that B.S. Anywhere south of there, especially on I-10 is the top of the world

Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Lafayette and maybe Mobile would be places I'd say I could live and die in...

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

Based on my experience Montgomery and Macon.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

dallas/ft worth. If you do either, you may as well go further northward lol although the metroplex is white-collar yuppie land. It's like choosing from the lesser of 2 evils here. houston is a blue-collar mentally backwards area(in total), imho.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

You cannot beat Huntsville, I left twice and came back both time. Great place to live and traveling to and from is easy. Catch a plane in B'ham, or Nashville if Huntsville is expensive.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

I think it all depends on what your are trying to do. I moved to Memphis from Huntsville after I finished grad school mainly wanting to get away from home to teach. It has been a good experience for me (met my wife, started a family, ministry, & other things). Memphis gets a bad rep and a lot of it is deserving. However we all know there is good and bad everywhere. I would not trade away the teaching, ministry, and other experiences I've had thus far. I would love to go back home someday. No place like it, yet Memphis has been good to me....

I like Huntsville and I think there are many opportunities here, but Huntsville is a catch 22 to me. For every thing great going on it still lacks certain things I miss about Atlanta. I think career wise it is a great place to start, but limits you in growth. If you come here already at the top or at a certain height in your career it is one of the best moves you can make. If you start here and stay here to long you get stagnated. It also lacks the true entrepreneurial crowd outside of DOD, salons and barbers businesses for minorities. The social scene in Huntsville was better to me in the early 90's also. Sometimes folks need things to do instead of going to Atl, Nashville or Memphis. The blacks here also don't network to help each other either. Coming from the Atl I wasn't use to that. People from small towns seem to love Huntsville and adjust very well.

A lot of Huntsville's economy is tied to government contracts. This use to be a good thing, but not so much now. However, I still love the area and wouldn't mind living there again.

I just moved from Knoxville. There is not a major social scene for African Americans.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

It use to be. Now it is more diverse with bio tech and manufacturing jobs such as Navistar and Toyota.
A lot of Huntsville's economy is tied to government contracts. This use to be a good thing, but not so much now. However, I still love the area and wouldn't mind living there again.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

Honestly, the DMV is for a nerdish/wonkish/workaholic crowd or for techy people. The creative types will get stagnated here. My fiance hates it here but I love it here. So much opportunity here. Best career move I made in my life. I do miss the NOLA social scene though. I would give anything back in Tipitina's or Blue Nile on a Friday night listen to the Soul Rebels cranks.

Cee,

Navistar is in Huntsville now? My ex from Grambling used to work there as an engineer in Indianapolis.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

Yeah they have been here for a minute. They are out by the airport. They build the big diesel truck engines out there. They have been out at by the airport since around 2004.

Pops I love the DMV also. There are a lot of opportunities for minorities. Networking is recommended in this area due to so many companies being in the area. Huntsville is nice also. My biggest reason for leaving was because I didn't like the racism in the area. The job market was good when I was there in the early 2000's.

Re: Where would you advise folks not to move for a job, social scene or anything else

You right buck. Folks try to act like it doesn't exist here, but racism is blatant in Huntsville in these companies. They try to mask it, but it shows it ugly head. White boys want let the brothers no where near the top.
