Where Have All The Dark Sistahs gone?....or Were they ever there?

Where are the dark skin sistahs in the national media? When I watch the music videos, all I see are those fine "redbones". It's nothing wrong with that but we have beauty in all shades. When you look on the cover on some of the black mens' magzines, you see mostly the light skin sistahs. I can't recall a fine dark skin sistah on the cover of BLACK MEN. This month's issue they have Ashanti on the cover. The swimsuit issue of BLACK MEN there were no dark skin sistahs in the issue. Can you name some fine beautiful dark skin sistah that's famous? Erika Alexander, Angie Stone, India Arie, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, do you know of any others? To bad the media are shutting these sistahs out.



There's nothing sexier than a bolegged dark skin sistah with ATTITUDE! I can't help it, that's just the dog in me! ;)
 
I think India.Arie is very pretty........it's funny you mention this because I got into it with this guy because he thought I was crazy for thinking that India.Arie was pretty.......he had the nerve to say that light-skinned women are better looking than dark-skinned women! I was like :eek:

For some reason I am quite sensitive to this topic because this is something I've been dealing with since high school.......but that's another topic.

Well, I for one think India Arie is pretty. I would love to date her if she was not a star and all. I don't make skin tone a issue. I base my choice on lots of factors. It is a shame we still have this poison in our race.

I don't know about the natinal media, but someone once told me that half of the dark-skinned sisters transferred from Southern to Grambling when Doc Greggs told them they couldn't be Dancing Dolls. He talked the other half in to staying to help teach the light-skinned ones how to dance.:D


It gets even worse. I've also heard that most Black guys can't say no to a Latino girl when she calls him "Poppie".
 
This might be regional, but on Channel 11, they have a sister on there that not only ain't bright, she ain't young, either!

I think her name is Iola Johnson.

SOGgy, if SU is so color struck, how the hell did they miss your light bright ass? :p

I feel ya on those issues, Yvette, because I've had to deal with similar issues myself.

Believe me...they didn't miss me. I got accepted. And I was not a scholar coming out of high school either. I knew something was wrong when they asked me to submit a picture with my application...no lie!

Right, this is not the Smack Board, but the comments on the Smack Board about Southernites being obessed with the lighteness of a person's skin is indicative of the whole problem with our race that was begun as a way to divide us as a people. And for many of us it is a self fulfilling, self hatred fulfillment of the psychological warfare waged against us as a people. This issue is probably the most pervasive, persistence vestiges of slavery.
Inferiority complexes drive the "master" mentality that dark skinned people are not as ambitious, not generally accepted as beautiful, and light skinned people hate dark skinned.

SOG, I respectfully disgree that the media does not shut anybody out. The media portrays only images of African American women who light skinned. As the first poster who posed this issue stated, RARELY do you even see a DARK SKINNED sister anywhere in a rap video. The light skinned ones are UP front and one or two dark ones are in the back and/or passing by. I know of only one dark skinned sister in the majority media that is a "cover girl", she is the one from Africa that has the very full face, I can't remember her name.

Just like Vinita and Yvettte, I have dealt with this insidious issue all my life, and no not at Southern, but in my family. Not my immediate family, but my mother's side of the family. My mom's aunt WARNED her not to marry that black ass man, cuz she would have a black baby...and be dayum if she didn't! Check out the avatar!

And by the way, I will never address this on the Smack Board, but just let the record reflect that dark skinned people excel at Southern University...some become Freshman Class senator, Junior Class President, make the Executive Board of the Association of Women Student, graduate magna cum laude, go to law school, pass the Bar the first time, AMONG OTHER THINGS...

Universities across the nation require a picture with an application for admission. So no, you are not lying. And if Southern's admission was based on YOUR SKIN color, you would have gotten in.

SS pay me no mind! I am just rambling. I too have had some encounters dealing with my skin tone, but I just didn't take that isht to heart for some reason.

I just don't buy into the idea that the media has is shutting the doors on dark-skinned women. On black people in general - maybe, but not dark-skinned people specifically.

None of the sistahs in mainstream media here in the metroplex are all that bright, but they're not all that dark, either.
 
Man dayum that color struck stuuf. We are sooooo busy being caught up in what complexion somebody is. But we are only half to blame for our issues. These things were imbedded in our minds many years ago, and it takes more than 140 years to overcome 400 years. We are progressing in these areas, but like with anything else, it takes time.

I think that anyone who chooses their mate based upon their skin complexion is a complete and utter arsehole. They need their shallow arses kicked. I for one am not that mind washed into believing that a woman's complexion makes her more beautiful. It is the length of her hair that matters...........That skin stuff is crazy!
As I say in my poem Confessions of a Hair Hoe....

I'll take you yellow as a lemon, or darker than a quater past midnight.
As long as you keep your hair long and bouncing

Vinita, look at that "black" "dark" dayum face, you know I get the REAL STOOPID question all the time! And I usually say, yes I am an AKA and have been for a LONG friggin' time! And out of 27 that pledged Fall '77, Beta Psi, I wasn't the DARKEST one! :mad:

It's a shame this is still a sensitive subject in our community, but you got to call it as you see it. If you don't see anyone in the media who looks like you or any of our people, your "logic flag" should raise up! The ADVERTISING MEDIA and yes the NEWS MEDIA make decisions for a REASON and that's MONEY. If they feel the PUBLIC would not want to see a certain persuasion, then for money and rating reasons,they are not going to hire that person to represent their product or institution. Suge was right, it is going to take a while for our people to get over this "programming". We can get over this programming by supporting all our people in business reagardless of what complexion they have. Brothas, if a magazine place a beautiful dark skin sistah on the cover, buy the magazine and later write that publication to give them props.

Why are you concerned with Prince... He has fugged a hole through Minneapolis... You ought to be glad he left all the dark skinned women for you.. Cause if he got ahold of them they would be RUINT too...
 
Yes, you are right Dirty, but when you are in a position to help your people and the image of your people, you should do everything in your power to do so.
