The game is at TSU. Filling up quick - last time I seen this many people in this Gym was graduation. We need to step our attendence game up.

Man it was HOT in there. I was sweating just sitting there. It was a BUNCH of folks in there. Hadn't seen HPE like that since the 03 PV-TSU game there. Refs were swallowing their whistles for most of the night. They let BOTH teams get away with a LOT.

just imagine if TSU would've got in on that Willowridge gig a few years back....but I;ve been said TSU should be the neutral ground for anything HISD in the playoffs as it makes much more sense than running to Aldine

TSU could host the regionals with the right logistics but UIL redtape is something

Its about 10k in here. These boys shoot quick. I like this.
Teams playing exciting basketball. When the SWAC use to play like that, the gyms use to be packed, well atleast @ SU, and we use to get really good players that wanted to play that style. Who wouldnt want to play for a coach who wanted to shoot every 7 seconds like Ben Jobe.

Can't imagine that gym getting anymore filled without fire code violations - doesn't matter who was playing that game was crunk. Half 3rd ward in red and gold. Half 5th ward in purple. I hear this is a long standing rivalry and I couldn't imagine any rivalry as historic as these two black schools.

IMO, the Wheatley-Yates rivalry is the biggest, most historical one in Houston, with Yates-Booker T coming in 2nd.

Someone was telling me last night that before de-segregation in the 1970s in Houston schools -- those were the only black schools in Houston. Is that true?

I can't say that with 100% certainty, as I was not around. But let me ask a few folks and they would probably confirm that.

I think that's correct however over time, some schools evolved into all-black (Kashmere) then you had Smiley and Forest Brook who were all-black.

Thanks to one of out most greatest Texas Southern historians and researchers, he provided me with the following link that'll give a little history lesson on the "original" all-black high schools in Houston...

http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/FF/hpf1.html

Until the mid-1920s the Fourth Ward was home to the only black high school in Houston (Colored High School, later renamed Booker T. Washington High School)...

The Fourth Ward lost its preeminence in the 1920s as the Third Ward passed it in population and began to attract more black institutions, including Houston Negro Hospital (now Riverside General Hospital), Yates High School (the second black high school in Houston), and Houston Colored Junior College (the antecedent of Texas Southern University).

Smiley was the white school (home of Lakewood Church) and Forest Brook was built for blacks even though it was after integration

with white flight....whites have fled all the way to beyond the beltway as every school inside the beltway now have turned minority and some of those schools where whiter than white...

but blacks have followed as schools such as Westfield, DeKaney (which is basically a modern day Booker T. or Aldine) have turned overnight and whites are beyond Conroe back to where my dad grew up

I wanted to be at this one...like I wanted to be at the Strake and Madison game, but ran into other things. At one point in the 60's and 70's, Wheatley and JY was about as intense as you could get on the HS level. Bloody even, on some occasions.

I know HS b-ball hit another level with the Willowridge run. But, has any of the playoffs since been as exciting? And, Im not talking one or two games of a certain team. Im talking the whole playoff run.

That 3 year run for Willowridge showed Houston a whole 'nother level. And, I haven't seen a team or group of teams produce 11am crowds for 7pm games like in that 2000--03 era. Imagine you thinking you're going to get a ticket nice and early for a 7pm game at a nice sized arena...and, by the time you get there at 9:30am, mofos are in 4 lines from the door, all the way down the ramp, into the parking lot... They could've EASILY charged $20+, considering all the talent in the playoffs that year.

Ahhhh! Good times. And, even better when it's your alma mater that's the headliner (selfish plug).

And, oh yea...for the Tre vs the Dirty Nickel...I set the line at 11/2 bullets shot in the immediate area. What was the final number?

The real Yates/Wheatley rivalry was in football. It was a site to be seen.

Wheatley before intergration was almost unstoppable. Wheatley also won a state championship after intergration.

MB Smiley was for whites and BC Elmore was for blacks.

In 1971 Forest Brook was built and BC Elmore became a middle school

No, there was also B. T. Washington, Worthing, Kashmere, B. C Elmore, Carver, M. C. Williams, the school in Galena Park that I can't think of it's name of right now, were all around before de-segregation.

And we certainly enjoyed the entertainment of suarezing down IH45 south and putting our foot in HISD schools asses. :emlaugh: If you're going outside the beltway, you'd better have a squad. :D lol (old days)
