What "some other" folks are saying about JSU stadium plans.......

Dasperm,

I understand what you're saying about utilizing taxpayer funds. However, that doesn't apply when you're talking about building a school's initial stadium. Like Stagga said, all schools get their initial stadium built by state funds. The thing is, it was done a long time ago when there was less scrutiny.

The other part of it is the value of the land memorial sits on. That tract of land might be the most valuable piece of property in the state. The state will profit more in the long run by developing that land and leasing or by giving UMC full control of it. Having Memorial sit there isn't the most efficient use of the property.

The reason why this WILL eventually happen is because the land Memorial Stadiam sits on is a helluva lot more valuable than Memorial itself. The $$$ to fund a stadium for JSU is peanuts compared to what the state can make off that prime real estate beside UMC. What's 40 to 50 million when you stand to make many times that?

Memorial is smack in the middle of THE primary hospital complex in the state. This ain't that hard to figure out.

The simple answer...for reasons stated above....YES. No one asked them to renovate Memorial for the same cost to build JSU a stadium. They voted to spend the money then, they can vote to spend it now. Now that "they" want the land, "they" look stupid for not doing what they should have done 10 years ago.

Also, I would love to see where UAPB raised that kind of money to build a stadium. A&T has been trying to raise $100M for 3-4 years and they are stuck at about $70M. JSU is in the midst of a $50M campaign. I refuse to believe that UAPB raised that kind of money and spent it on the stadium. .

He ain't hearing that first part.
I already posted about that infamous "$1 deal" for Memorial.

And I really wanna know how UAPB raised Millions in a few years for a stadium and other facilities.

And we talking "YT MILLIONS". :D

Dasperm, are u saying UAPB didn't utilize any state funds in the building of your stadium?

You want the laws/funding codes change here.................Then move here and start a movement to do so.
Until then THIS STATE CAN USE STATE FUNDS FOR BUILDING PURPOSES on College and University campuses through bonds.

----------------------------------

And as far as your knowledge about everything that is involved with this, you lacking insight.

-----------------------------

This project is about more than a stadium for JSU.
It's about the growth of JACKSON as a whole with UMC, St. Dominics, and Veterans Hospital and DOWNTOWN/WEST Jackson.

This group plans to build a medical complex that will ultimatly connect their area with the Jackson Medical Mall complex bout a mile away.

Guess what sit's dead in the middle of that plan.....................Memorial.

You preaching now!!!

And show me where these private funds..............not BONDs..........came from.
And as for tax dollars, mine are spent everyday on shat that I have no use for.

You going on what Arkansas do.................This ain't Arkansas.
My families tax dollars have went to build on every campus in Mississippi.
Now that JSU has ask for something for the first time, everyone wanna act like super patriot's with that not my tax mony crap.

You want the laws/funding codes change here.................Then move here and start a movement to do so.

So.................All this "Not my tax money crap" is just that............CRAP.
The tax payers won't be paying for a dang thing in the end.
JSU would have to pay those bonds off just like ALCORN is doing now.
And as for the stadium situation, you are truly talking like someone not from here.

I'm trying to give you a perspective you have not thought about looking at. For whatever reason, JSU didn't get a stadium initially like the other schools. Maybe both parties (JSU and the state) agreed Memorial was be the best fit and there is no need to build an on campus facility, who knows. Now, X number of years later, you want to use the "YALL DIDN'T BUILD US ONE" Excuse? PLEASE!

From what you are saying, the state is now FUNDING the project, its JSU through BOND repayment, in other words a LOAN. Just get the BOND propasal to the voters and get it passed. I was under the impression that the state should allocate the money.

With the way this is looking.... Bham will have a dome before this stadium is built lol..... Jackson State better get buddy on board (the rich man who proposed Alabama State's stadium)

And I really wanna know how UAPB raised Millions in a few years for a stadium and other facilities.

SIMMONS FIRST National gave UAPB the loan to fund the first phase of the project. The loan was backed by proof of enough season ticket sales that would cover the payment. UAPB tried for over 10 years to get a new stadium before getting this loan.

The 2nd and 3rd phase of the project includes a training facility, workout rooms, etc. State funding will be provided for these building because they will have classrooms.

It took more than a few years to get this to happen.

Donald Watkins????? Mr. "Each SWAC school should put $1M into my bank just for the 'L of it... um, I mean, for the sake of the conference"?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

"Lenny" from Good Times send help.

We'll see when the next legislative session starts how quickly this will be going.

Sperm,

Sometimes I wonder about you. It's fair for everybody to have the state build them a stadium, but not us. It was ok for "taxpayer money" to be used then, but not now??? If we didn't get it then, we shouldn't get it now??? :smh:

Stagga,

I used to work in Canton. Easiest rides to and from work. Watching all the Madison residents going into Jackson each morning and watching 'em go back at the end of the day. Gridlock one way. Smooth sailing my way.

Didn't the state also appropriate money to help with the construction costs? http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/ftproot/ACTS/1997/HTM/1356.HTM Earlier, you made it look as if UAPB funded the entire project with private donations. That's misleading. Also, we funded the new Payton training facility with student fees.

See people..................Told ya'll he ain't reading.:lmao:

"X number of years later":lmao:
Have you NOT read where we asked them YEARS before THE STATE decided to put all that money into Memorial.:smh:

"Maybe both parties agreed"
Did you NOT read where we said it was THE STATES DECISION TO renovate MEMORIAL.................JSU had nothing to do with it.
JSU had a stadium plan on the table then before they spent dime 1 on Memorial.

I don't even know why I'm trying to explain this to someone that is not going to have to spend 1 dime of his "tax money" on anything in Mississippi.

Dude................Face it...............It's gonna happen wether it's this year or within the next 5 years.......................No matter how hard you pray for it not to happen.

UMC, ST. Dominics, and Veterans Hospitals will get that land and JSU will get our stadium.
May take a few years, but it will happen.

With all the stuff that has been explained to this guy, he still just don't get the fact that 1 project is tied into another.

And we ain't gonna even get into how a downtown stadium will affect the Capitol Greens Project and the Farish Street Downtown Entertainment district.

From now on, I'm post thing's once for out-of-towners.
It ain't worth the time.

You right about my ride to work.
When I'm going North, all these people are headed South to Jackson and when I get off, the Traffic jams are headed North.

I just glide right on through.

JSU don't let these folks stop you. Man when AAMU first announced it was going to build our stadium them ofays came out the closet the same way. We still built Crews so screw them. We caught slack all over this state for wanting our own stadium. Ask MD I'm sure his was fighting in the trenches for us.

Hey, if MS is OK on spending state funds to build football stadiums, then why not get a new one for every school every 10 years. Why not ask for a 50K facility when you only average 25K. Its no financial sacrifice to you, your school or alumni.

I personally don't believe that state funds should be used to build stadiums for colleges. At no level of sports do government funds get used for these types of facilities. In high school, voters VOTE on bonds raises to build stadiums. On the professional level, voters raise sales tax or whatever to build state of the are facilities. In every case, the people who pay are the people who benefit. I agree, if JSU wants a new stadium, then JSU should buy a new stadium, especially if there is one right there for their use. You can argue that one was built for every other state institution.

If I'm living in Mississippi and my kid goes to MVSU, why would I want my tax dollars being spent on building a new stadium at JSU? As a tax payer, I'm against it. I am for my tax dollars being spent on a new dorm, fine arts building, administration building at JSU, not some new football field.

:xeye: Public, state funds, and bond money have been used to build stadiums all the time. The NFL makes a living off asking taxpayers to foot the bill for stadiums. Do you think the teams are funding them? :lmao: Stadiums are seen as huge economic development projects. They bring other commercial development and traffic to the area. Restaurants and businesses locate near stadiums because of the increased traffic. And there are several types of bonds. The bond proposal for JSU's stadium would NOT have to be voted on by the taxpayers.

That's a BS number anyway. It's not a true picture. For years when the stadium calculated the numbers close to correct we were closer to 35k. This new facility would bring that in and more alumni would show up. I love Memorial and have fund memories but I would rather buy season tickets at a stadium that belongs to JSU than Memorial. I know it would benefit my school directly. You just don't know how many alumni would come out of the woodworks to attend on campus games. But keep thinking we can only average 25K.

Uuuh no it doesnt. They been dangling that dome stadium in yalls face for about 10 years now. Now you talking about a waste of money, and dome stadium in Bham is it. The people of bama are smart about at least one thing, there is no need to build a dome stadium just for high school playoffs.

This is the first year a stadium for JSU has been proposed and we are already have accomplished more than the Dome project. Just face it, unless The Real Iron Bowl comes back to Bham, yall aint getting no new stadium dude.

Tiger, I understand that. I live within a 5 minute walk from a mulit-million dollar facility for high schools in my town. MISD Stadium This was built with BOND money, in which people in Mansfield voted to INCREASE their property taxes to pay for the project.

The Dallas Cowboys are building a new facility in Arlington, TX in which the people of Arlington voted to increase the taxes on car rentals and theme parks to fund the city's share of the project.

The Cleveland Browns built their new stadium by DEEDING the seats out to the fans. Every seat is like a house, in which the owner pays personnel property taxes for.

As you can see, all of the above only affects the people who want the facility. JSU should get an on campus stadium, its only fitting that they have one.

You can't argue with the state on the fact that they just spent $30Mil on renovating Memorial and now they should spend $XXMillion on building a new stadium. Well maybe you can, I really don't know.

Frankly, I'd prefer the stadium to be about 30K with room for possible expansion. SEASON TICKET sales should be priority #1. In a stadium of that size, demand for the SU and Alcorn games alone would drive sales.

If you wanna get into those "prime" games, you better buy a season ticket. That's how the big boys do it.

Sprem....GR thinks that in your rush to be the antagonist on this matter, you are missing the whole point.

Speaking of which. Gonzaga (I think) built a new basketball facility (7K to 9K) seats and the only way you could get season tickets were to buy them up for 3 years. That was the ONLY way to get a ticket because that is how they built their new facility (future season ticket sales).

You can go into the bank and get the loan to build facilities IF you have the financial SUPPORT. WE (AS BLACKS) just won't support in that fashion. :topic:

Point is JSU wants a new stadium because all the other schools in MS got their stadium funded by the state, right? Oh, JSU also needs a stadium on campus.
