JSU should foot bill for own arena

So, Jackson State University wants its own on-campus stadium ("JSU officials lobbying for stadium on campus," Nov. 29)?

Well, JSU alumni and students should be prepared to open their checkbooks and foot the bill, rather than the citizens of Mississippi!

Veterans Memorial Stadium has just dumped a huge amount of money to improve facilities. What a huge waste of money it would be to change directions now and build a new stadium!

It appears that many leaders in Jackson feel it is a "right" for JSU to have an on-campus stadium of at least 50,000. Why? According to recent statistics, JSU's home attendance continues to fall and 50,000 seats can't even be filled!

In Hattiesburg, the University of Southern Mississippi is undergoing a building boom of athletic facilities. They are expanding their baseball stadium and adding skyboxes and upgrading their football stadium as well, all through private funds.

JSU should be required to do the same and raise the funds internally instead of waiting on another handout from taxpayers.

Who else besides JSU uses Veterans Memorial Stadium? I thought Jsu was in the market to by Vet Mem Stadium.

And this is why I have continued to say a stadium for Jackson State is a LONG SHOT. UMC has influence at the state Legislature, but the voters have more and this is Mississippi. I completely disagree with the writer of this letter because state money was used to build the original stadiums for ALL the state universities and Jackson State is the only one without a stadium. So the state SHOULD build JSU a stadium and Jackson State should raise money for further expansion projects. And who knows what JSU's real attendance is because I and many others question the validity of the reported figures.

I think the 50K seats and 80M dollar numbers are scaring a lot of potential supporters. In reality the stadium would be closer to 35K seats and the cost would be much less than 80M.

Dude.......................You went to the LETTER SECTION of the Clarion Ledger to find this.

Let's point out a BIG FACT that this nutt left out.

USM IS doing their renovation with PRIVATE FUNDS.
But what the letter writer left out was there is not 1 single UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE, or JuCo that funded their initial stadium in this state.

That was done by the State of Mississippi.

Alcorn had a stadium on campus................even though it was not up to par.
How do you think they got the $25 to $30 million to build theirs?

Come on people.....................Don't post bullshat and take it as the attitude here.
This writer don't know his arse from his head.:lmao:

Who else besides JSU uses Veterans Memorial Stadium? I thought Jsu was in the market to by Vet Mem Stadium.

Heck no.

They tried to "sell" us Memorial for $1 dollar back before they first decided to make renovations.
That place had so many structural problems and debt, we would have been fools to do that.

So what do they decide on their own.........................SINK $35 MILLION INTO MEMORIAL instead of building us one back in 1997.
All this talk about the state putting money into Memorial is the STATES fault.

JSU had nothing to do with it.
We asked these fools to take care of something in 1997 that we would not even be talking about now if they had done the right thing.

Don't laugh too hard because you would not believe how many in Mississippi would agree with the writer. :vomit: It is sick.

Man.................."People in Mississippi" are saying the same thing about the Metro Parkway and anything that has to do with the city of Jackson.

Don't bother me though.
Bottom line is the State can either do for us like they have done for everybody else.

Or the State and taxpayers can continue to foot the bill for a place for JSU to play in while at the same time choke the life out of UMC.
Who do you think is gonna win this in the end however long it takes.

An on campus stadium will be nice..............BUT................We can play at Memorial for the next 10 years for all I care.

As long as the fee stands at $15 grand or 7% a game, the lost revenue on that property after the CCC is on the state......................Not JSU.

People complain about the city of Jackson, but Makaho said it best, that if the roots die, the tree will die. The majority of jobs are in Jackson. Ask them if they still want Jackson to perish.

And I see it every morning.

These fools in Madison alway's talking bout how they will never set foot in Jackson, yet every morning while I'm driving I-55 north, these people are bumper to bumper from the Ridgeland exit all the way back past the Madison exit headed into Jackson to work on I-55 South.

I-55 North is clear...................No traffic at all except for them NASCAR NISSAN plant workers.
Them MoFo's will run over you trying to get to that place on time.

I personally don't believe that state funds should be used to build stadiums for colleges. At no level of sports do government funds get used for these types of facilities. In high school, voters VOTE on bonds raises to build stadiums. On the professional level, voters raise sales tax or whatever to build state of the are facilities. In every case, the people who pay are the people who benefit. I agree, if JSU wants a new stadium, then JSU should buy a new stadium, especially if there is one right there for their use. You can argue that one was built for every other state institution.

If I'm living in Mississippi and my kid goes to MVSU, why would I want my tax dollars being spent on building a new stadium at JSU? As a tax payer, I'm against it. I am for my tax dollars being spent on a new dorm, fine arts building, administration building at JSU, not some new football field.

I seriously doubt the state of MS is going to build JSU a 50K stadium... Maybe 25-30K but definley not 50K.

JSU better take what the state is willing to give and raise their own money to add addional seats in the future.

Dude...........................My family went to JSU.

Why was our tax dollars spent to build ALCORN a stadium back in 1991?
Why wasn't people telling them do do it by their damm self.

Did UAPB build their new stadium with PRIVATE FUNDS when ya'll joined the SWAC?
I would like an answer to that please.
Show JSU how UAPB raised every coin to build that stadium
.

Amazing how all this "funding" is a problem now that it's JSU's turn.
Again............Just gotta laugh.

I actually think it should be a source of pride for HBCUs to build their own athletic facilities instead of relying on the state. You never get a top notch athletic facility if the state pays for it... It's usually the bare minimum.

It's not going to be a 50,000 seat stadium.

More on the lines of 40,000 downtown next to the new 8,000 seat Convention Arena.

It all ties in.....................JSU/ Downtown Jackson/ Metro Parkway.

If Alcorn got one that holds 22000, we will get one bigger. However, you are right, it won't be 50K and I think every JSU fan with half a brain knows that. However, JSU will get better than a bare minimum for several reasons. There are a lot of eyes on this and this will be a part of the downtown beautification project (only becasue they will want it to be). The state will need to use this facility for certain things like the HS playoffs. 50K is a good place to start becasue we know how the legislature cuts things. Regardless, we know that we don't want or NEED anything bigger than 30-35K. Any bigger and we won't get a boost in season ticket sales.

As you, an SU alum knows, this stadium ownership deal is expensive. I personally don't see much benefit. It's like a car...it only going to depreciate and you can't even sell it...you can only tear it down or spend MILLIONS to renovate.

The answer YES, UAPB built their stadium with PRIVATE FUNDS. In Arkansas, the state will NOT give you money to build OR renovate a stadium.

This is NOT about UAPB, its about your tax dollars. There have been millions spent to renovate one state facility. You think the state should spend millions to build the same type of facility just miles apart.

And show me where these private funds..............not BONDs..........came from.
And as for tax dollars, mine are spent everyday on shat that I have no use for.

You going on what Arkansas do.................This ain't Arkansas.
My families tax dollars have went to build on every campus in Mississippi.
Now that JSU has ask for something for the first time, everyone wanna act like super patriot's with that not my tax mony crap.

You want the laws/funding codes change here.................Then move here and start a movement to do so.
Until then THIS STATE CAN USE STATE FUNDS FOR BUILDING PURPOSES on College and University campuses through bonds.

So.................All this "Not my tax money crap" is just that............CRAP.
The tax payers won't be paying for a dang thing in the end.
JSU would have to pay those bonds off just like ALCORN is doing now.
And as for the stadium situation, you are truly talking like someone not from here.

And as far as your knowledge about everything that is involved with this, you lacking insight.

This project is about more than a stadium for JSU.
It's about the growth of JACKSON as a whole with UMC, St. Dominics, Veterans Hospital, and DOWNTOWN/WEST Jackson.

This group plans to build a medical complex that will ultimatly connect their area with the Jackson Medical Mall complex bout a mile away.

Guess what sit's dead in the middle of that plan.....................Memorial.

The reason why this WILL eventually happen is because the land Memorial Stadiam sits on is a helluva lot more valuable than Memorial itself. The $$$ to fund a stadium for JSU is peanuts compared to what the state can make off that prime real estate beside UMC. What's 40 to 50 million when you stand to make many times that?

Memorial is smack in the middle of THE primary hospital complex in the state. This ain't that hard to figure out.

The simple answer...for reasons stated above....YES. No one asked them to renovate Memorial for the same cost to build JSU a stadium. They voted to spend the money then, they can vote to spend it now. Now that "they" want the land, "they" look stupid for not doing what they should have done 10 years ago.

Also, I would love to see where UAPB raised that kind of money to build a stadium. A&T has been trying to raise $100M for 3-4 years and they are stuck at about $70M. JSU is in the midst of a $50M campaign. I refuse to believe that UAPB raised that kind of money and spent it on the stadium. I am sure that some bond referendums were involved somewhere and maybe UAPB is paying them back. However, you need to clarify "UAPB built their stadium with private funds". I am sure that JSU will too have some burden to carry in paying for something for the stadium but the state will build us one. I don't think we have any doubt in that. If they tear down Memorial for Ole Miss and leave JSU out in the cold, that will bring about a racial divide so big, you will think it's the 60's again.
