What did u think of SWAC week 1

I was able to listen to the radio broadcast of the Swac games today and some of the things i was hearing was quite rough...

JSU needs an offensive line like a deadman need a coffin.... The score of that game can be a lie if u just open the paper....

Southern needs a whole bunch of things because they just got hammered..... and hammered... and hammered.....

UAPB has a decent defense... we all expected that, but eric dooley still has work to do on offense

Alabama State and Valley was what I expected.... Valley will upset somebody in the SWAC this year

Anthony Jones needs to win the SWAC to save his job..... U lose a lead like that in that time span and thats no good...

Listened to ASU and Grambling and watching it too.... I owe Grambling an appology.... they are a solid team... All yall Alcorn fans better wake up and smell that coffee.... Got work to do...

some think Broadway left it bare or something at Grambling.....all those 5th year guys out there on defense says alot...

We have talent... B'way brought in some good players and taught good fundamentals. A lot of the criticism was fueled by a core group with personal gripes and issues, some of which was anger over him replacing Spears.

Doug has done a good job with this team, tweaked some things were needed and left alone those areas were we were sound.

It's the first week so everyone is trying make adjustments. I think the overall play of the swac teams could have been better.

What did I think? Thanks for asking. Here goes.....

G-men, looked really good, solid performance all the way around. A lot of talent around DJ, which will allow him to stay in his comfort zone and manage the game.
JSU- Looked like they should have looked considering the competition. Good warm up game, confidence builder. If not for the suspention thing they would surely win the east.
Alcorn- I expected more, but you just don't have the talent around Air Canada to take the conference. Spears has some work to do- Next year will really tell the story.
Aa&m - Hard to tell, I don't know how good the HU team is and didn't see the game so the jury is still out.
Apb - Is still apb - don't exptct to much from this season or next. The upper tier west teams are tough and it is not going to get easier any time soon.
ALst - reading through the thread this could be your year to loose the the west team in B-ham. It will be you or corn.
Valley - Is still valley - but I think they will upset some one. They always do, best outlook for season is to be a spoiler.
SU - this week was just bad, coming off of last year. If you are not 2-2 by the end of Sept. you may as well go ahead and replace stump. He will lose the team, turst me I know. We have been there!
TSU - Should contend for west and conference. A strong defense and run game shuld carry TSU most of the season. Time will still tell.

I see a 1 loss team from the west playing a 2-3 loss team from east in Texas Ham.

From somebody who was actually at the game, Valley is waaaaay better than last year. The wasn't indicative of it because of the funk that the offense was in, but folks playing Valley this year thinking it's gonna be a cake walk will be surprised. The defense looks good when they aren't over-extended on the field, and for the first time in a long time, we finally have what looks to be a decent quarterback in Garrick Jones, now if we could just get our center to have clean shotgun snaps and the offensive line to block somebody we could be dangerous.

That's being generous. Truthfully, our collective level of play couldn't have been much worse.

He's a good one. A bigger and stronger version of Bridges at Alcorn. What did you think of Bama State's Jenkins and Andrews performance?

~sigh~.....I was glad to see my folks out on the field.....it's just too bad I didn't like a lot of the stuff they did when they got out there. I don't make excuses when we lose, but Lord, it seems like we're down before we can even get up. One of our 3 QBs will already be out due to his hamstring (he wasn't in practice when he hurt it) and one of our star defensive players more than likely won't even play due to his heart condition (good call by Coach Coleman). We (UAPB) don't take our opponents lightly, but it would be nice if we had some game film on Langston prior to the game; all we had was their record last year (6 wins - 4 losses), but I guess that should have been our que to toughen up.

I told BH123 I saw our defense of old (AWESOME) this past Saturday, but I also saw our offense of old (TERRIBLE) too. We definitely need to work the offense. We have depth on both sides of the ball, but as for offense, we have quite a lot of depth in WRs, RBs, TE, half back and full back. There is no reason why we can't have an offense capable of the spread. We have to work on knowing when to run, pass, throw the ball. Since Coach Coleman is calling the shots on defense, I'm pretty happy. He was a wonderful defensive coordinator for us; he knows a little something about defense.

BUT if we continue to play like we did this past Saturday, it's gonna be a long, long, long, long, long season!

The game was on SWAC TV so most of us got a chance to see Valley... So we could form a good opinion of the team.

Southern- I really think our problems last week was from the offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line was being dominated which meant our QB didn't have enough time to survey the field and make the best throw and our RBs didn't have time to find a hole to gain yardage. The defensive line was pushed around a lot which allowed Tenn State to just run the ball all over us. They basically had all day to find holes and gash us for big yardage. The defense has to find a way to stop teams on 3rd down so that they don't stay on the field the entire game. If we can't stop the run and our offense can't finish off drives with points, then teams are just going to play ball control offense with us and just run the ball the entire game.

Also all of those stupid penalties need to disappear quickly. You cannot have over 100 yds in penalties in 1 half and expect to win.

we gave away the game in Chicago vs Hampton...

we have a young team so we will be ok! just use it as a lesson

Those dudes are huge. I hope we never have to play a team who have a center that is 320. Everybody is taller then 6'1 and over 305 pounds. :smh:

SU should've used it's quickness on defense and put eight or nine in the box to stop the run. Based on watching them last year, Tenn. State has a pathetic passing game. You stop their run, you beat 'em easily.

Andrews didn't surprise me, because I knew he was good from him destroying us last year, that still doesn't excuse some fo the blown coverages we have especially that first td he got. More than anything with Jenkins I was impressed with his poise and ability to escape pressure and still look to pass while scrambling. I still think Dominguez is the better pure passer.
