In my humble opinion there are many things that to cause the boom to loose some of it luster.
Guys like Harold Haughton and Dowell Taylor required a level of commitment that today?s boom doesn?t have. They also required a lot of discipline from its members as well, something that the boom is truly lacking. There was no playing around in the stand waving to friends. When they came in it was about the business of blowing the other band out.
Many key staff members have left. Just off the top of the head the biggest have to be ?Pop? Duplexsis (sorry if I misspelled it) and another is Dr. McGrudder who did many of the arrangements we enjoy today.
Overall I think the band is stills tops in the SWAC and all of the HBCU?s they just need to get back on track.
Ohh, almost forgot FRESHMAN don?t have to crab anymore, staples of Taylor and Houghton?s bands.
guys make great points. My biggest complaint (and I dont know a whole lot about bands) is that the marching on the field looks bad. The lines are crooked and everybody is not marching like they should. Also they don't swing the drums and sway like they used too. They used to look real crisp and uniform.
