Today's games
Prairie View (2-4, 1-4 SWAC) at Mississippi Valley State (4-4, 3-3); Rice-Totten Stadium, Itta Bena, Miss.; 2 p.m.
The Panthers and Delta Devils have been disappointing this season. Prairie View has lost three in a row since upsetting Southern, while Mississippi Valley, which was expected to contend for the Eastern Division title, is currently tied for last place with Alabama State.
The Panthers lead the league in scoring and total defense and are second in rushing defense, but Prairie View has scored 14 points or more only four times this season.
Meanwhile, MVSU QB Aries Nelson hasn't played like the preseason Offensive Player of the Year. RB Johey Hargrett, who is fourth in the league in rushing, has been the Delta Devils' top player, along with WR Clarence Cotton.
LB Tyler Knight, the SWAC's preseason Defensive Player of the Year, has 66 tackles thus far.
Prediction: Mississippi Valley State 20, Prairie View 14
Alabama A&M (5-2, 3-2) vs. Alabama State (3-4, 3-3); Legion Field, Birmingham; 2:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs need to win to stay within striking distance of Jackson State. The Hornets need to win to keep their hopes alive of having a winning season.
Alabama A&M features one of the top offenses in the league, behind QB Kelcy Luke, RB Ta'Mar Scott and Nic Luke and WR Kevin Francis, but the Bulldogs have had trouble in the red zone.
ASU is giving up just 269 yards per game.
The Hornets have struggled offensively, averaging just under 290 yards and 16.6 points per game, but the Bulldogs will play with a revamped secondary today. How they play today will be important.
The last four games of this series have been decided by four points or less and this one should be close, too.
Prediction: Alabama A&M 21, Alabama State 17
Jackson State (5-2, 4-1) at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-3, 3-2); Golden Lion Stadium, Pine Bluff, Ark.; 6 p.m.
The division leaders in the SWAC meet today when the Tigers visit the Golden Lions. JSU has a one-game lead over Alabama A&M and Alcorn State in the Eastern Division, while UAPB holds the tiebreaker over defending champion Grambling in the Western Division.
The Tigers will rely heavily on their solid defense to slow down the Golden Lions' high-powered offense. JSU leads the league in rushing defense, allowing 82.1 yards per game, and is third in total defense and five in scoring defense.
UAPB counters with the league's leading rusher in Martell Mallet, who is averaging almost 107 yards per game.
UAPB QB Chris Wallace has thrown for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns and just three interceptions. WR Jason Jones is averaging almost 26 yards per catch and has eight touchdowns on just 23 catches.
Prediction: UAPB 24, Jackson State 20
Grambling (3-4, 3-2) at Texas Southern (2-5, 2-4); Durley Stadium, Houston: 7 p.m.
Grambling has won three of its last four games and appears to be building steam after an 0-3 start. The Tigers are averaging more than 36 points per game in their last four games.
QB Brandon Landers leads the league in passing (218.9) and total offense (224.1), while WR Clyde Edwards and Henry Tolbert are first and third, respectively, in receiving.
TSU has lost five straight after a 2-0 start. TSU is last in the league in scoring, rushing and total offense and last in scoring defense.
Prediction: Grambling 35, Texas Southern 7
Last week: 2-2
Season totals: 29-15
