Upperclassman Bandsmen?

Man 5 a.m. was so funny.....Crabs are out there at 5:00 by 5:03 at least 10 people have quit. That was just from fear alone.:lol::lol:

Yeah, PsychoJ; that is funny as all get out. And folks think the show "Fear Factor" just started a couple of years ago...:scared:

The worse thing was hearing for the first time......stand up, stand up, stand up........you then stand up and everybody says "Sit your stupid arse down" All you can do is look like this >>>>>>:(:retard::xeye:

Thats a Jukebox Classic right there!!! 100+ upperclassmen yelling at one totally clueless/defenseless imbecile.

Hell how about folks quit the first night we got there for crab week. Folks parents haven't been gone but a few hours and the onslaught began.:scared:

Lol.
I don't know how Crowley does it, but that Sunday before crab week at the meeting/check-in, after DOC would give his speech and show the film, the lights would come on and Doc would announce "PARENTS.... GOOD NIGHT!" Basically telling them that we were on our own from that point. And as soon as the parents were gone upperclassmen would be coming out of everywhere. Kids running to the back door loking outside for Momma, thinking "What have I gotten myself into?" Then they start breaking down the crab rules and you begin to realize that "I'm not going to just be regular freshman!" Some kids would give it up then, and some would fall off when we got back to the dorm and you getting knocks on the door from old azz cats that you don't know talking about "cut your hair.....now! You would lose about 5+10 kids that first night. a

Ahhh! Sweet memories of crabbing at the "U"...

I remember being like "WTF!" and "Is these Ninjas serious?" that whole first day of crab week.

More memorable quotes from various crab weeks:

  • "Knuckle Pushups? Man, they got glass down here..."
  • "Let me teach you how to wipe your smile"
  • "Why are up so early? We was just on the field like 3 hours ago!"

swish! :lmao:

when i marched once you crossed the band, you were not a crab anymore, and you have say so, but you are also obligated to learn the ropes and be observant. in my section, you sat tight in reference to "the process" cause you don't know what to do since you've been at attention the prior year. i was assistant section leader my neo year, so i had responsibility and was required to get wit it and could not act a fool.

It also helps when you enter as a freshman and can outplay the section leader. You get a lot of respect early, but they won't tell you that in public. Them thinking that they will be looking up at you in Wind Ensemble has a way of keeping them off your back. When you push them in execution and performance on the field while keeping your mouth shut and displaying some humility, you don't get a lot of flack.

well initially i did not get anyone off my back because i could play circles around them. you damned if you do, you damned if you don't. if anything it got harder. the usual response is, "oh you can play, you still aint shat, straight ahead." at least that's what i was told. :lmao:

 yezzir!

and don't let a upperclassmen forget their gloves or headband. "give it up, crab..." :emlaugh: hell i had a batch take half my horn and swap it with her broke shat. :splat:

Lawd, the good 'ol days---- where fear and respect went hand in hand.

Funny!

In the BOOM, there's a song upperclassmen sing to crabs called "GO BACK HOME!" And when it's sung, it's sounds soooo good, but it will shole hurt your feelings if you're the one it's being sung to.
Every now and then, the BOOM sings it to the opposing band at games. :D

LOL. I bet it is the same song the Boom Tubas used to play and chant back in the 80s. We used to do it Callaway trying to mimic the Boom back then as well. Never knew they told the crabs that though. LOL.

Stagga, yall got some splaining to do.

It just might be the same song. It is old.

I understand the feeling. It only mattered if you actually cared about what they said and I didn't. They knew I would bury in the concert rehearsal and the recital hall and I knew it. What they were concerned about what how that would play out in front of their upperclassmen peers. Their only hope was to get me to quit and that wasn't going to happen. The harder they tried, the more frightening I became to their egos. It turned the tide and they left me alone.

We would sing this to the opposing team and fans at the end of the game as a send off when the Tigers would kick their behinds. We would even wave and harmonize at the end of the last line, "take your dead azz home." That was my favorite time of the game.

Sadly, Dr. Peoples made us quit singing during my junior or senior year. I guess he thought we were being rude. :D

Doom, Doo, Doo, Doom ... Doo, Doop, Da, Dooo, ... Doom, Doo, Doo, Doom.

Go Back Home
Go Back Home
That's Where You Belong
Take Your Dead Azz Hommmmmmmmmmmmmmmme.

That's it, that's it!!!!!

You know we already musicians--- we would harmonize that song and would be singing it so beautifully.

It was sung to us (crabs) during my crab year ('94) during band camp, and the upperclassmen were singing that song from the heart and so loudly that we could literally feel it. Talk about hurt feelings.

Yep that is it. The Boom would strike it up at the end of the game. We did it in high school but couldn't say the arse part. LOL. I miss the old Tuba fanfares by black college bands. I also remember the Sonic Sonic Sonic BOOM! Chant and the tubas, trombones and such got into the act.

They don't do this any more? Please tell me they still do. I'm not really a T-bone fan, but that section made that chant ring.

LOL @ yall's violent flashbacks...

To my understanding...at PV, the crabs...err...first year band members didn't become neos until the first day of band camp the following year. So even though marching band was really relaxed during the spring semester, if the band had to perform somewhere, the freshmen STILL had no privileges.

Here is my list of dreaded quotes and songs.

Crab Chant #1

Freshmen: "I'm a crab!!!!"

Oldheads: "You's a batch!!!!"

Crabs: "and I'm FIIIIIIIRED UP!!!!!!"

~We kept repeating the chant until we got back to the band hall (if we were marching back from the football field)~

Crab Chant #2

Freshmen: "I...have...marched (insert number here) games...I'm NOT in the...band yet..."

Saxophone Crab Chant: "Two all beef patties...special sauce....lettuce...cheese...I'm a saxophone crab...don't break ma'reed...."

My favorite old head tune:
(From Michael Jackson's "heal the world")

"Glaze a crab.
Make it a better band
for you and for me and
the entire old head race.
There are...
(ahhhs) Crabs shamming...
(ahhs continue) and they need some motivation.
So glaze a crab for you and for me...."

Oh...the mem'ries.
