Upperclassman Bandsmen?

SIR_GRAM

Legend
In your college band your currently in or were in in the past, when were you considered to be a UPPERCLASSMAN and really have a Say So.

At GRAM, your considered to be a Upperclassman when your a Sophomore, your treated with the same respect and authority as a Junior or Senior

And also if not, what you think is a Sophomore's place in a college marching band?

Sophomores, while not crabs, are still learning what it takes to make the band function the way it should. And since they're NOT crabs, they should be held to a higher standard than a crab should, as it should be with juniors and seniors.

Sophomores still need to STFU and get in where they fit in. They just have the freedom that upperclassmen have. When I was section leader, I was harder on them than the crabs, because they should have known better.

Of course, this doesn't let the crabs off the hook, but it lets them know that the expectation is there, even after they "cross". (Is that word legal anymore?)

At SU when I was there, even as a soph you were considered an upper crab if you were an average player. If you could play then you had a little more leeway. Now for all of us who had pledged KKPSI and were Sophs we were automatically thrust into the leadership of the band and it was expected. Since we were generally the better players in the sections then we got that respect. Not to mention the way the band was structured around PSI. Of course older Psi members and non PSI upperclassmen that were Srs and Jrs got their respect from us Sophs. I have also seen Srs and Jrs that were not respected as well. Usually if you could play and march you got respect once you became a soph, jr, or sr unless there were other personality issues with you.

We call 2nd year band students "upper CRABS."

Personally, I didn't consider myself a true upperclassman til my 3rd year simply because I was pledging my 2nd year and it was like being a crab all over again. :(

At SU you are a crab until you aren't anymore. Then you are a Juke, and are afforded all the rights and priveledges of such. Of course there is protocol and Sopomores fall in line after juniors and seniors, but a sophomre in the Jukebox is still probably too "shell shocked" to voice much of an opinion. You spend most of your time harrassing crabs and thanking God that its not you!

 That is a true statement about the Juke. Just walking into the room for me as Soph after being a crab the Fall before and pledging PSI the Spring. I was sort of shell shocked. You aint used to rolling into the bandroom with any kind of freedom. So it is brand new to you. Hell I was still walking out of the bandroom through the left door because as a crab, I avoided the right door since them Baritones and Funk Factory fools were over there. I avoided them mofos like the plague in Fall 84. Took me a little while in Fall 85 to realize that I was still doing that. I was like oh yeah alot of them my bruhs now. LOL.

What kind of FREEDOMS and NON-FREEDOMS do you have and don't have when in a SWAC/HBCU band?

Like, can you not go to lunch when you want to or what? Just curious.

You should've been considered a crab a 3rd year for marching with BamaSt....:teleport:

Well let's say you couldn't do a few things being a crab back during my day. So no you couldn't go to lunch when you wanted before school started. We also were not supposed to be walking on grass either as a crab. Couldn't wear any Jukebox regalia except your crab band shirts with the S on it. Had to call upperclassmen sir. You didn't say isht in the bandroom unless you were spoken too or asked something. You sat in your section and didn't move unless it was necessary or it was time to go outside to practice. We had to ride a specific bus on road trips and ate last wherever Doc took us to eat. Let me remind you that at SU we crabbed the whole season until the final seconds of the BC. So this isn't just a crab week or band camp thing or that stuff let up on us during the year because the upperclassmen got used to you. Nah it was like that until the end of the season. LOL. There was a fear element in Juke being a crab back then. Can't speak for things now but I know like Jugg 91 said you are somewhat still shell shocked at the beginning of your Soph season so basically you are looking for that year's crab class to mess with. For me it was a double dip. I had been under seize for my entire Fr year since I pledged in the SPR after my Crab Fall. At least my crab brothers who didn't pledge had a break during the Spring to get their minds right again from crabbing. So you do enjoy the freedom of just being able to chill in the bandroom and not worry about upperclassmen and such. You can finally walk in there and relax.:lmao:

Could use the front door of band room, no walking on the grass, no parties, no hair; walk everywhere. Couldn't wear an S shirt(had to wear the Jaguar shirt) we could only wear the S on game day.

I kinda wish they brought the Jag shirts back just for them purposes. It would be nice if the crabs didnt' get they're "S" shirt till after the classic.

swish! :lmao:

when i marched once you crossed the band, you were not a crab anymore, and you have say so, but you are also obligated to learn the ropes and be observant. in my section, you sat tight in reference to "the process" cause you don't know what to do since you've been at attention the prior year. i was assistant section leader my neo year, so i had responsibility and was required to get wit it and could not act a fool.

:smh:...you ain't like it. But, it got you ready to march. That's one of those key "ingredients" the rest of the SWAC don't know nutt'n about.

One time for the Marching Jaguar Crossing Gaurds.

PS- *while standing in the shade*....I'd like to send a shoutout to Clarence. You're my inspiration to uh...staying inside in the A/C.

Reading these posts shole do bring back mem'ries.....

"Crabs don't get tiiiiiiied, 'cause crabs 'Luv da Boom' "

:shame:

Crab week and Doc tells you to be at the bandroom at 8 but upperclassmen tell you to be downstairs at jones hall at 5 am. Run and march for 2 hours then go to the bandroom and theres no Doc! SPend another 2 hours outside getting crab names and skits, and doing PT. 10 am and still no Doc. Knighten pulls up about 10:45 and asks how was breakfast? We're wondering "when was breakfast?" Doc shows up at the crack of noon ready to work. HE gives us 40 minutes for lunch then works the dog schit out of us. The crabs that complained ended up turning in their shirts and shorts and leaving, never to be seen again(those fools don't know what they missed).
