"Alfred (N.Y.) University, where a 21-year-old student was found dead in a creek last winter after being beaten by members of his fraternity house, is shutting down its Greek system, officials said Monday. The nearly unanimous decision (one trustee abstained) comes after a sharply worded report recommending elimination of fraternities and sororities was issued by a task force created in February after the death of junior Benjamin Klein, a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. Fraternity members said Klein drank heavily on a fraternity trip to Syracuse. His behavior annoyed his travel companions, and two fraternity members reportedly beat him during the trip. The district attorney said Klein's death was not directly linked to the assault. Alfred's vote was based on several factors, including a declining Greek membership on its campus, and a review of decisions at more than a dozen campuses in the Northeast that have either overhauled or closed their Greek systems."
The story didn't say how the guy ended up in the creek. I wondered about that since it was concluded that the beating didn't "directly" contribute to his death.
I wonder how Greeks will be affected if they are excluded from all college campuses. I don't see this happening, but if it did would the Greeks go underground or would the Grad chapters become the primary way for pledging??
