University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans

Oracle,

Is he wrong in believing that a HBCU would not likely win a championship, considering the way the athletic departments are run? I tend to agree with that.

Who are good fits? The directors at the athletic departments now run inefficient and ineffective departments, so what's the benefit in having someone who is a good fit, but has no knowledge of how to compete with PWCs for outside resources. Give the man a chance, as he has proved that he can be effective. Maybe the athletic departments at HBCU's need to change to accomodate experienced outsiders who can improve scheduling and fundraising.

OK! Give him a call.

I certainly would recommend that he be considered seriously if we were in the market for an AD. The guy had to learn something and develop some fundraising sources while he was at GA. Simple but effective reorganization of manpower and restructing of the athletic department's operations would do wonders for the department.

I feel what you're saying. It's worth a shot. At least holla at him as a consultant on how to reorganize/restructure the athletic department to ensure the most efficient operation. But then, we can do that with any "good" A.D.

If this cat were to come to an HBCU, he'll discover day 1 how different our worlds are. Menial stuff that he had 5 assistants to do for him will have to be done by him. He'd feel like a slave with all the stuff he'd have to do himself that he never considered doing at UGA. Then factor in the lack money and how he gotta chase it down, no resources . . . Dude would straight quit.

I'm thinking he already knows that our departments are in deep distress. He probably would get frustrated once he got there, found out that the problems are worse than he imagined, that the staffs are untrained and not well motivated and there is little support from the administration.

Cooper felt this same way when he first came from Louisville. But if he is aggressive like Cooper, he would probably be able to entice some locals to donate small amounts to the department. When Cooper needed money for his program, he went out to local car dealers etc. and got donations. After Cooper got there and promoted the team, there was a light-year of distance between the local support we had before he got there and when he left.

Cooper had developed these skills before he got to AAMU, and use them to our benefit. Evans could do the same. And when he felt that he has had enough and quit, at least the athletic department would be better off than when he arrived. Just like Cooper left our our football team substantially better that it was under previous coaches.

The ability to attract dollars is a gift those I-A/FBS coaches have. Even Bell could raise money for his team. Hell, he damn sho hit my wallet. So, I'm not surprised to hear how Cooper was. Too bad they didn't know a thing about X's and O's.

just because he was in the SEC, that does not mean it'll translate into success in the SWAC...we've tried that formula before time after time....Evans didn't have to work as hard as an HBCU athletic director, he has a team full of folks hired to fundraise on the outside, they are fully staffed, etc....

he ain't tapping into resources like you think....there are a team of folks who identify those resources, interview them to see if they're serious and all he does is seal the deal....

I can work at Georgia as I can do alot with less....he's always had a lot so how does he work without much?

Plus, GA is the big state school....the average joe identities with them off the top....you're on autopilot

I would not expect him to collect (raise) as much money for us as he did for GA. You are right....the AD job of raising funds for major colleges is a lot easier in the sense that they have adequate number of staff persons, adequately trained personnel, and ready-made sources that are willing, if not eager, to appear on the donation rolls.

I am simply saying that it would not hurt to give him a try even if other imports from major schools failed when working for us.

I am also in favor of giving our exiting ADs adequate money and personnel to see what they can do. Some would do well and others wouldn't.

They were in enviroments that required them to raise money and taught them how to do it.... It became part of their nature... our entire athletic departments need to adopt this philosophy and former ADs from these different enviroments might just be the impetus for change.

We will see if the attitude and philosophy of our baseball team change now that we have hired (for the first time) a legitimate former head coach from a school that had taken baseball seriously.

Let me clear something up: I would seriously recommend someone with his experience. Whether I would recommend him after the DUI is something else.

BTW, the guy is not detached from HBCU issues. During the years of the Councill Challenge (where A&M had to raise a million dollars to match the State's donation of a million dollars) the Georgia Athletic Department was listed on the donor's list as donors over $5000 at least one, if not, several times. I assume he was the source of that (those) donations to us.

I was listening to a discussion on the radio about this and the question was asked, notwithstanding the DUI and any other criminal charges, why was it necessary to put the red underwear in the report??? It's not like that fact is gonna have any effect on the charges one way or the other.

Re: Damon Evans OUT: UGA Athletic Director's Resignation To Be Announced Monday

If WE could out last the Changes he would try to make at a HBCU, I willing to believe that he could turn one around... If he was Hired, we would absolute HATE him and the Horse he came in on. WHy he doesnt understand, people that dont give a dime to a program treated like VIP, He would most likely add the Money Games (Ok State, MS State, USM) tickets in the season ticket packages, I dont think he would allow us to buy the cheapest ticket to get in and then sit in the reserve area...
I Think He would do huge Changes... He he Dont have a Full Time Staff, but im sure he would get creative in Hire Grad Students and Student workers to fill the void..
He would mean huge Change for a HBCU

Re: Damon Evans OUT: UGA Athletic Director's Resignation To Be Announced Monday

grad students are cyclical....some are good but some aren't and the time you teach them, they're gone

to be an effectuve fundraiser, your azz has to be out of the office alot and have a staff under you that can handle day-to-day operations efficiently...that ain't happening at an HBCU as the AD is expected to be on campus 8-5

Our biggest Problem ^^^^^^..... We want a Friend, someone to Speak to us and Answer Our BS Calls about Nothing important... THats what we want our Presidents to do also... But you cant raise Money sitting on campus and have Lunch in the Cafe... At least I know my schedule of decision making and making money happens during Lunch or at Dinner. And if you want my time and our business then I need some PF Chain, Cheesecake Factory, or at least Cheddars, The Cafe want Do..
