Had Damon Evans been the general manager of, say, the Atlanta Braves, he might have kept his job. A professional sports team exists for two reasons — to sell tickets and win games. Nobody gets a diploma from the University of the Atlanta Braves.

But Damon Evans was not GM of a pro team. He was, to borrow a phrase attributed to him on the infamous police report that clinched his apparent ouster, the athletics director of the University of Georgia. And there’s your difference: An awful lot of people have paid money to receive the diploma that graces their wall, and those people want that piece of paper to mean something.

Had Evans stayed in place, that diploma would have been cheapened by the memory of a regrettable mug shot and the image of red lingerie. The DUI arrest put his job in jeopardy, and the detailed nature of the police report clinched his fall. He might have fought — and might still fight, at least legally — the official charge, but the university could not allow him to fight it on the school’s dime.

Ah...this ain't a sports topic. You should move BACK to Small Talk.

But he was the AD at UGA. So yes, it is a sports topic. The Tiger Woods thing affected sports, entertainment, business, athlete-wife relationships, his blackness (or lack there of), how should his private life be covered and of course him setting up a makeshift pimpin' scheme to grab women in different cities across the U.S.

This Damon guy is a nobody. He just affects Georgia athletics. Most people don't even care about ADs.

Damon Evans is officially out as the University of Georgia’s athletic director.

UGA president Michael Adams announced Evans’ resignation today following a brief meeting by teleconference of the executive committee of the UGA Athletic Association this morning. The board voted unanimously to accept Evans’ resignation.

Evans submitted his resignation Sunday after meeting with lawyer Ed Tolley, who represents the university, to negotiate the terms of his departure.

Evans’ resignation is effective immediately, but he will still receive a portion of a five-year, $550,000 per year contract. He was given a $100,000 “longevity bonusâ€￾ as well as three months pay from his new contract as severance pay.

The contract took effect last Thursday — minutes after Evans was arrested on a DUI charge in Atlanta.

he's only trained in the UGA system where resources are unlimited..he wouldn't last 20 minutes with us :emlaugh:

The vagina remains undefeated once again.......the true heavyweight champion of the world :emlaugh:

He once stated to an HBCU athletic director, why are you all even Division I, you all will never win a championship. So I am not sure he would truly be interested and furthermore as The Band Fan has alluded too, I am not sure he would be able to function (i.e. good fit), to benefit of an HBCU, considering all things he would need to deal with. But, I am sure many would be willing to look the other way.

Now you know he will eat those words and will come back to his people after everything is said in done. That's how it always works.

That's why he might be valuable... he knows why the resources are unlimited, where the resources are and how to tap into them.

Is he wrong in believing that a HBCU would not likely win a championship, considering the way the athletic departments are run? I tend to agree with that.

Who are good fits? The directors at the athletic departments now run inefficient and ineffective departments, so what's the benefit in having someone who is a good fit, but has no knowledge of how to compete with PWCs for outside resources. Give the man a chance, as he has proved that he can be effective. Maybe the athletic departments at HBCU's need to change to accomodate experienced outsiders who can improve scheduling and fundraising.

I doubt that. He probably has done enough favors for other people in the business, and those people would probably give him a helping hand. Think of the coaches and ADs from all those FCS schools that he gave guarantee games in football and basketball, as well as lower FBS schools that he scheduled for big paydays.

just because he was in the SEC, that does not mean it'll translate into success in the SWAC...we've tried that formula before time after time....Evans didn't have to work as hard as an HBCU athletic director, he has a team full of folks hired to fundraise on the outside, they are fully staffed, etc....

he ain't tapping into resources like you think....there are a team of folks who identify those resources, interview them to see if they're serious and all he does is seal the deal....

I can work at Georgia as I can do alot with less....he's always had a lot so how does he work without much?

Plus, GA is the big state school....the average joe identities with them off the top....you're on autopilot

If this cat were to come to an HBCU, he'll discover day 1 how different our worlds are. Menial stuff that he had 5 assistants to do for him will have to be done by him. He'd feel like a slave with all the stuff he'd have to do himself that he never considered doing at UGA. Then factor in the lack money and how he gotta chase it down, no resources . . . Dude would straight quit.

Thats possible, but I really would not bet the farm on that if I were you.

hmmm.......having worked in the University System of GA. and an HBCU IHMO he would probably make less money, substantially less support staff, radically lower budget (that's a given), and need to make an adjustment to a different business model. It will be interesting to see what his next move will be. AD jobs at PWC for AA men are not easy to come by..... I really feel bad for him....... I am not prepared to say he doesn't have the mental mettle to be successful at an HBCU.......Self preservation make people rise to different circumstances....
