Unemployment state by state

Some of Mississippi's unemployment problem may be a result of Hurricane Katrina.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Alabama only at #12, and somewhat surprised to see Georgia down at #33.

The auto industry is really helping out the unemployment rate in Alabama. Some people went after the state for going after Honda, Toyota, Hyundia and MB, but it has really helped out the economics of the state. The tech industry in Nothern Alabama is still storng. Overall good news for Alabama.

I will say one thing for Gov. Riley....he is at least progressive minded enough to realize that a strong ECONOMY is the foundation for a better quality of life for a state. Before it's all said and done however, I still think the lottery referendum will pass in Alabama.

I wonder why Louisiana was not on the list. I work with Federal employment assistance and these numbers are not adding up. Something ain't right. I see stacks of unemployment requests everyday. And they are still high.

But Mississippi is!:shame: I don't know what's going on in Mississippi. Why are we always dead last in everything?

I truly feel that Mississippi (folk in control) is happy with their status, it's a closed society. I received an email recently about a festival on the Mall sponsored by the Mississippi Society of DC. I stopped by in hopes of eating some of that catfish, found out you had to pre-register to get food. All the white schools alumni were represented. I believe I saw two black couples sitting. Needly to say I left immediately and had a great time at the Carribean Festival on Georgia Avenue.

The thing that I wonder is how the white folks in Mississippi are able to do good for themselves that don't have degrees. The blacks without degrees in most cases are struggling to make it. I know several white people in my hometown that have nice homes, cars and never been to college. They are able to get bank loans without any problems. When a black person tries to get a loan they want to know your entire history. Example: I found a property in Mississippi that I was interested in purchasing, so I wanted to take some of the equity out of one my rental properties. I went to two different banks to see if I could take out a home equity line of credit. The banks looked at my credit report and my salary. My credit score is very good. They still didn't give me the loan. I know some white people that were able to get the loans that they wanted and they had bad credit and didn't have high-paying jobs. My cousin that lives there had the same problem. I think Mississippi still has a lot of racial issues to work out.

I agree. That's why I left Mississippi. The people just refuse to keep up with times and move forward. I really didn't realize how bad it was until I really got away....then came back to visit. :shame:

U ain't crazy is ya? You know we live under the "Good 'ol boy system." Where I work there are the dumbest, lame-brain excuses for white people working making bank because they KNOW somebody who TAKES care of them - and many of these folks are young as hell living ALL UP & DOWN of Madison/Rankin County & The Reservoir in their custom-built mini-mansions........ they get a leg up at a young age on establishing wealth & take advantage of it. Sweet Black people on the other hand must be smarter than Einstein to get an interview and pray that Uncle Wilbert ain't considering his golf partner's son for the same position to half-way have a chance.

EXACTLY!
When I worked at the Ledger, the publisher at the time (Hunsberger) was making 6-figures at a mid-size, state-circulated, daily newspaper... and only had a high school education.

They don't care, esp. those with old money. They like things just the way they are.

Yes, Dear, that's also a "prerequisite" for getting a job if you're Non-Black....don't have the education nor qualifications for the position.....just come on in. The stories I could tell.

It's the same for Georgia.
At one of the universities here, you don't have to have a degree to apply for certain (mid-level) jobs. They substitute degree with experience.

Mississippi had issues way before Katrina hit.

I know the Good 'ol boy systems is everywhere but it's still frustrating.

That's the Southern system. The "good ole boy network" It's the same way here in Arkansas too. And don't let one White person with 1 semester at Fayetteville apply for a job. If you got a degree from Harvard, the good ole boy with 1 semester from the Razorback country will get the job.

Yeah, I know. That's one of the reasons Mississippi decided to allow the casinos to come in. But even though the state's problems existed long before Katrina, one must admit that Katrina certainly didn't help matters.
