Already in the midst of a search to fill four coaching vacancies that opened after changes made two days after the season ended, Arkansas-Pine Bluff coach Monte Coleman fired quarterbacks coach Winston Delaney on Tuesday.

Delaney, a former UAPB quarterback who joined the staff in 2008, confirmed on Wednesday night that Coleman relieved him of his duties when he returned to J. Thomas May Field House following the staff’s two week break for the holidays.

Delaney said he returned on Tuesday, went to Coleman’s office to check on the progress of the original search and, “I get the bomb dropped on me.â€

“I went to him, since we came back, he hadn’t hired an offensive coordinator yet, I just wanted to know ‘Where are you headed?,’†Delaney said. “He said he wanted the coordinator to coach the quarterbacks.â€

MAN!......They really want to make a statement!

Question: When he got the job, was he allowed to bring in his own staff or did the have him keep the "current" assistants at that time?

He was a current assistant himself. Monte has no clue on being a head coach, he is a minister who basically was put on staff as a volunteer coach and the PUBLIC thought he would be a good head coach because of his success in the NFL.

My question still is if things are so bad that all the assistants on your staff have to go, then what good are you?

My bet is the OC that was hired has beaten the breaks off UAPB the past two years, so at the end of Coleman's contract, the OC will be moved up to the head coach.

This is not a surprise to anybody who can count. The surprise is that it took him a month and a half to realize he needed two vacant slots on the offense. I'm pretty sure he hired Delaney on Cannon's recommendation, so when Cannon got fired he should have known it wouldn't be long before his a@@ was grass!

I see where you're coming from... hope it works out for yall, really. You guys are an important rivalry for us and your success plus our success means a more attractive payday at the Delta 4 Literacy Classic.

This is so true; I went so far as to say it toward the end of 2008 f'ball season, when UAPB only won 3 games! Pressure was put on Cannon the BEGINNING of 2009 season when (my inside sources) tell me that he was "allegedly" that if we didn't win against Langston (which btw was our 2nd game of the season), he could "clear out his desk". I don't know how reliable this source is, but we did beat Langston and the offensive plays during that game were like UAPB of the 90's!

IMPO, and you're gonna be mad at me for this Sis (MSLION98), Cannon should have been gone during the 2008 season. But I do believe in doing things the right way. At least Coach Delaney was "told", all be it in a less tactful manner, that he was no longer needed.

There's my 2 pennies again! Thanx!

I think Delaney was fired to increase the salary of the incoming OC. Don't know how much the assistants were making, but I bet the incoming OC requested a salary that was probably higher than what Cannon was getting or any other OC that was UAPB. So my bet is that the new OC will get Cannon's and Delaney's salary.

No it's a numbers game, he said he wanted an OC. & a line coach that's two positions for one vacancy on the offensive side of the ball. He had a Wr, Rb, Qb & TE coach plus cannon' slot so one of them had to go!

I don't think it was a salary thing. Isn't the OC coming up from D2? If that is the case, then its more so for the chance to move UP, not salary.

The only rationale I can make out of this deal is the OC probably has a system that is not conducive to the QB skillset of Delaney. Delaney should come on back to Dallas and return to the high school level. When he was at Lincoln, he had the baddest QB in the nation, who is currently the starting PG at Oklahoma State.

Delaney didnt come to Dallas Lincoln until 2005. Byron Eaton had already graduated. Delaney is a good coach having met him but I dont know if he is College Oc type material

He wasn't an OC, he was the QB coach. Anytime you have a OC who doubles as the QB coach, then you have a problem. How can the most important position on the team NOT have its own coach?

I disagree, in college even at Bcs schools the OC are position coaches too. Who is the OC going to spend most of his time with, the Qb, so he might as well be the Qb's position coach too.

It is done in football all the time, especially in the NFL. When Pats went 16-0 in 2007, Josh McDaniels was the OC and quarterbacks coach.

Some teams, like the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers, don't even have a QB coach. The Offensive Coordinator at Texas is also the QB coach. The same at Boise State and other schools. So it is not unheard of.
