Just a quick question. Is there a difference in sound between the metal tubas and the uhhh....white ones(forgot the type of material)?

Fiberglass is the word I believe you are looking for. Yes, in my opinion they yield different sounds.

why not see for yourself...listen to a band with fiberglass tubers, then listen to some tin cans. lol im sure youve been to marching sport or one of those websites

To my understanding, Fiberglass carry a more rounder sound and you also can do more effective runs when you are playing. Corvette vs. porsche both are fast cars but porsche handles curves more effectively!

I would think that would have to do with the individual playing the horn.

I prefer the sound of a metal sousaphone, more so a Conn 20k. They have a truer color...to me.

Exactly.

The fiberglass tends to absorb some of the sound before it has a chance to leave the horn. The brass horn gives more of a ring. I prefer the brass (Conn 20k for me, too).

that's what I was thinkin'. I hear a deeper sound from fiberglass than I do the metal.

Anybody know why the Boom switched to metal from fiberglass. Just curious. I think it's been a while since they switched, just wanted to know.

Grambling got Tuba's???????????

I thought those were just some big ARSE dented up French Horns or something, cause they don't have NO sound.

And get that drum section some new drums!!!!! I was sitting right behind them at the BC and man those drum look like they were in a Hurricane Katrina flood. Dayum near all of them were either cracked or swollen. I this I am not lying or joking about. Those drums (snares, tenors, bass were phuizukked up Man)

And another thing, if HBCU's can't have some nice looking brass or metal tuba's don't put any in the band!!!! Man some of the tuba's I have seen in some of our bands looks like them bi-at-ches was in a hail storm or got run over or something!!

Makes the whole band look cheap as Phizuck. Schyatt, I remember when one of the bands on here was spray painting there tuba's silver....... LOL, I ain't gonna say no name though!!:licky:

Brass Horns (IMO) take it from someone who played on a fiberglass while at Alcorn and I played on brass in highschool. Although Alcorn Tubas have put a lot of others to shame we have had some exceptional players espically in 99. But it seems that fiberglass holds the sound back, A Conn would be my choice to use.

These Brass Sousaphones sound pretty good IMOP!

I wish Grambling still had the 20k's. They play on Bach's now.

....now thats funny. I was just mentioning to someone that I liked that sound on a clip that I had...I didn't know they had switched brands.

As for fiberglass it gives a different sound but I doubt you could ever come to a conclusion of a deeper sound when listening to two good sections in person. Theres nothing wrong with either...they just tend to get the job done in different ranges.
