Just a quick question. Is there a difference in sound between the metal tubas and the uhhh....white ones(forgot the type of material)?

Fiberglass is the word I believe you are looking for. Yes, in my opinion they yield different sounds.
I would think that would have to do with the individual playing the horn.To my understanding, Fiberglass carry a more rounder sound and you also can do more effective runs when you are playing. Corvette vs. porsche both are fast cars but porsche handles curves more effectively!

LISTEN TO ALABAMA STATE THEN LISTEN TO SOUTHERN. YOU WILL HEAR THE DIFFERENCE.
that's what I was thinkin'. I hear a deeper sound from fiberglass than I do the metal.
Don't yall play on 20k's?Exactly.
The fiberglass tends to absorb some of the sound before it has a chance to leave the horn. The brass horn gives more of a ring. I prefer the brass (Conn 20k for me, too).

Anybody know why the Boom switched to metal from fiberglass. Just curious. I think it's been a while since they switched, just wanted to know.
I wish Grambling still had the 20k's. They play on Bach's now.Yezzir...

:emlaugh: Since 2002....now thats funny. I was just mentioning to someone that I liked that sound on a clip that I had...I didn't know they had switched brands.
As for fiberglass it gives a different sound but I doubt you could ever come to a conclusion of a deeper sound when listening to two good sections in person. Theres nothing wrong with either...they just tend to get the job done in different ranges.

These Brass Sousaphones sound pretty good IMOP!
