TSU's new football coach?

last time Steve Wilson was in Texas...TSU whipped their azz and HU was one of the top HBCU programs. Thomas Sieh had 300 yards and the other back had 170. The KR had 2 TDS also.

What makes matters worse....TSU's staff is broken up also. We just hired their recruiting coordinator who brought some good Florida talent to TSU. Thanks.

Steve Wilson was doing a great job at Howard as head coach until the latter two years or so years. He has won plenty of MEAC titles.

In 13 years at Howard, Coach Wilson had 8 winning seasons. 2 of the 8 winning seasons he finished 6-5. 3 of the 8 winning seasons he finished 7-4. The other 3 winning seasons he finished 8-3 (1989), 11-1 (1993), and 10-2 (1996).

In his last five years at Howard Coach Wilson finished 24-31. His last three years, He finished 10-23. Get my point, good hire, yeah right.

And James Jones (defensive coordinator)

trying to find some information on Jones...was he from Tennessee State? Regardless, we have enough SWAC now on the staff.

Exceptions made for hiring John Shannon as offensive coordinator or Asberry.

I think James Jones played at Texas Southern under Coach Highsmith. He was the D-Line coach last year at Texas Southern. Last year was his first year coaching at TSU, I can't remember what school he came from. I do believe it was a D-1 school.

I think Steve won only one MEAC title. He never beat Billy Joe. Even in 1996, when they shared the BCF National title with JSU, FAMU was the MEAC Champ. They went into the post season ranked third behind #1 JSU and #2 FAMU in the Sheridan Poll. JSU and FAMU went to the playoffs and lost. Howard went to the HB and beat SU and somehow the pollsters thought that they should leapfrog the two top teams. I think he did win the MEAC in 1992 but that was over 10 years ago.

I thought JSU won the 1996 title by themselves? HU was not nearly as good that year.

Shannon is WR coach at Toledo. If you can get him, do it. Assberry?? He's still young and has some potential. But his positives(play calling, game planning) are outweighed by his negatives(player development, no emphasis on fundamentals, no dicipline).

LP, A&T won the MEAC crown in 92. We went 9-3 that year and beat Howard 16-14.

Well you could have used that server space to make the HoU correction......It was 1993, when Jay Walker made his legendary performance against the Agonies of A&T.

TSU hires ex-Howard football coach Wilson

By RICHARD DEAN
Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

Texas Southern athletic director Alois Blackwell chose a coach he knows well to lead the Tigers' football program. Now he's hoping his former Dallas Cowboys teammate, Steve Wilson, can enjoy the same success he came to know while leading Howard University to two Black College National Championships in the 1990s.

Wilson was a member of the Cowboys with Blackwell in 1979, Roger Staubach's final season. He went on to direct Howard for 13 years and led the Bison to national prominence on the NCAA Division I-AA level.

"We want to be a championship football team at Texas Southern, and Steve Wilson certainly has championship credentials," Blackwell said. "We're excited about those things."

Blackwell is not the only familiar face Wilson will see this season. He'll coach against his previous boss when TSU faces Prairie View A&M and new coach Henry Frazier III.

Wilson spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Division II Bowie (Md.) State University, where Frazier was head coach.

Wilson thought the opportunity to coach in Houston was too great to pass up.

"The city of Houston is a tremendous sports town, look at the venues and support," Wilson said. "You want to be part of something like that.

"I'm excited to have an opportunity to put together a program in the state of Texas."

Wilson takes over from Bill Thomas, who resigned last month after 10 years at TSU.

Wilson and Blackwell agreed on a multiyear contract, but no deal has been signed. Saturday, Wilson and Blackwell said a deal should be finalized shortly.

Wilson, 46, turned Howard into one of the most explosive offensive teams in college football.

Wilson said he has not had time to evaluate TSU's personnel, but has an idea of what type of offense to run.

"We'll be multiple," Wilson said. "We'll know how to run the football, and certainly know how to throw it. We've always thrown the football well."

Wilson's 11-0 regular-season team in 1993 featured quarterback Jay Walker, the NCAA Division I-AA Player of the Year.

TSU, coming off a 5-6 season, employed a spread offense the last two seasons under offensive coordinator Mark Orlando.

Wilson is the son of former NFL player Tommy Wilson, who played for the Los Angeles Rams, Browns and Vikings.

In 1978, his final season at Howard University, Steve Wilson set single-season school records for receptions (94), receiving yards (1,339) and touchdown receptions (12).

As a free agent, Wilson signed with Dallas and played three seasons at cornerback. He ended his NFL career with seven seasons in Denver.

"He brings an NFL style of football, terminology and play, that we like," Blackwell said. "And I think the kids coming out of high school will certainly like.

"He came from a football background and work ethic far better than a lot of folks. I can't wait for him to get started."

Wilson also was eager to begin his TSU career. He's familiar with the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having played TSU and other SWAC schools.

"It's a very intriguing job," Wilson said. "We've played SWAC teams and I feel the talent base of this area is tremendous."

Wilson said the outstanding high school talent in the Houston area sold him on TSU.

"Any time you go in as a college coach and have such a fertile recruiting area, that's the key," Wilson said. "The key in this business is aquisition of talent.

"I think we'll get the kind of talent to have a chance to be successful against the teams we'll play."

"Once he gets started and once the city of Houston and TSU family see how he shapes the young men we have, we'll have some great years," Blackwell said.

Just my two cents. If he can win at Howard, he can win anywhere. Howard is the 3rd largest HBCU in enrollment, but they are last when it come to a commitment to their athletic programs. He should do a good job.

Texas Southern is no better, all our administration does is hire their friends, not the best qualified.

Now he's hoping his former Dallas Cowboys teammate, Steve Wilson, can enjoy the same success he came to know while leading Howard University to two Black College National Championships in the 1990s.

Coach Wilson had a winning percentage of 54% in thirteen years as head coach at Howard University. In his last five years at Howard he had a losing record.

James Jones:

*brought in under Highsmith 91 - 93 and played under Bill Thomas in 94

* captain of the Tiger football team and leading tackler his senior season

* Student assistant in 1996

* 1997 Bachelor's of Science in Biology (Texas Southern)

* 2002 Master's in Education (Wagner)

* defensive line coach at Wagner College

* special teams coordinator and oversaw linebackers at Cornell University

* assist the defensive line in their tackling tactics at Texas Southern

Both candidates met with President Slade, Vice President of Business and Finance Quintin Wiggins and Athletic Director Alois Blackwell:

Tuesday
Kenwick Thompson's interview was Tuesday morning (9am or 10 am) and he was back on his way back to San Jose that afternoon.

Wednesday
Steve Wilson's interview was Wednesday morning (9am or 10 am) and he was finished around 3pm.

Wednesday & Thursday
Johnnie Cole spent a significant amount of time with Athletic Director Alois Blackwell from 4pm Wednesday to later on that night. On Thursday morning starting at 10 am, his interview process started and wasn't complete till that evening. Johnnie wasn't scheduled to leave Houston until today (Sunday).

How the final decision went down:

President Slade was in favor of Cole
AD Blackwell was in favor of Wilson
VP Wiggins was not in favor of Cole becuase of his past

Wilson wins out 2 to 1

If Coach Cole's past was a problem, how was he a finalist for the position?

To appease the alumni so the administration can say we brought in one of you as a finalist.

Does the AD and VP Work for the President?

President Slade knows as much about athletics as President Bush knows about politics.

She has confided in her VP (Wiggins) to make the ultimate decision on athletic related affairs. He has a background in athletics and she feels he'll make the best decision for the program.

Only Time will tell-----
I hope is a Good Hire for TSU....

If its a done deal-----Stand by your man
:goodbad:

Sometimes the wrong man can do the right thing

I been said Johnnie was used to shut the alumni up....TSU should've rallied around Kenwick.

I have the tape when they asked Blackwell why he liked Steve Wilson. Check it out on the show tonight. We will interview him also.

TSU made a Great Pick

Steve got burnt out at Howard. They just wouldn't give him the support financially (stadium and facility upgrades) or staff wise (paid staff). That was a big problem at Howard. Way too few paid coaches. Too many volunteer and underpaid coaches.

Steve also ran off a lot of assistants in his early years of coaching because he was too controlling. That may be a concern with Steve, his learning to both delegate and trust his staff. As time went on, he was much better at it. Expect him to bring in some pretty good assistants.

One of the major hurdles he had at Howard was admissions. There was no real separate policy for athletes, so if you coulnd't get in as a regualr student, you couldn't get in. Howard's admission requirements are very high. Remember, it's private and there's an undertone of anti-athletics in some circles, so athletes get ZERO break from the admissions office.

Having said that, he should do well at TSU. He'll have way more athletes to choose from (huge talent base and less stringent admissions) and hopefully he's learned from his errors re: dealing with his staff.

Offensively, he's really bright and he's even interned with the Ravens on the defensive of the ball for I believe 2 years. He's no slouch on the defensive side of the ball either.

We also had a lot of NFL scouts coming to DC during Steve's tenure. A lot. A whole lot.

When Steve was the head coach, players graduated...a lot. He will certainly help your graduation rate 'cause he takes academics seriously.

If y'all support him financially, basically giving him the money to hire the coaches he needs. Giving him a strength and conditioning (S&C) coach just for the football team. Not a football coach who does S&C, but a real S&C coach. And some form of academic counselling/support for the players, you will be a force w/in 2-3 years. Shoot, you could be a force next season if y'all have the talent in place.
