The last time Southern University and Texas Southern met at the F.G. Clark Activity Center had the Jaguars celebrating a breakthrough Southwestern Athletic Conference championship, with the band tooting and fans dancing after a blowout to punctuate the close of the regular season.
Tuesday night, Southern?s Deforrest Riley-Smith threw himself on the floor, writhing in agony with heartbreak after a last chance to win went awry, at the buzzer. This time, the celebration was all Texas Southern?s.
Leonta Matthews? putback with 10.1 seconds left lifted TSU to a 65-64 victory over the defending SWAC champ as SWAC play began in front of 543 fans. <----------------
SU, which went 10-0 and won all nine of its SWAC home games in the Clark Center a year ago, had every chance to ice this one away, and then one last one to win it.
Southern led 61-55 on Javaris Bradford?s jumper with 5:47 remaining, but the Jaguars didn?t make another field goal. Meanwhile, SU went 3-for-8 at the free-throw line and had two turnovers.
Chris Davis missed a pair of free throws with 28.1 seconds left, and Matthews scored after Jacques Jones missed in close.
?I told them we were going to win (in the timeout with 15.3 seconds remaining),? TSU coach Ronnie Courtney said. ?Leonta said it was ?my rebound. I?ll put it back in the basket.? I told him if he did that, we?d win.??
Southern had one last chance to win, but Steffon Wiley missed as he drove the lane and forward Douglas Scott couldn?t get a putback to go, with the ball clanking off the bottom of the rim.
Leading TSU (5-6, 1-0 SWAC), Jones had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matthews added 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Chris Moore had 11 points.
Southern (1-12, 0-1) got career highs of 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists from Geri Guillory, with 13 points from Wiley and 10 apiece from Deforrest Riley-Smith and Geri Guillory.
?We just didn?t finish the game off,? SU coach Rob Spivery said. ?We had opportunities to finish, and we did not. A couple of things hurt us: We didn?t make our free throws at the end, and then we didn?t get the defensive rebounds. If we do that, we win the ballgame.?
TSU?s last two scores both came on putbacks, the first by Moore to get the Tigers within 64-63 with 1:19 to play.
After trailing 4-2, Southern got 3-pointers from Guillory, Davis and Wiley in a 13-0 run, taking a 15-4 lead six minutes into the game. TSU got within 23-22 on Jones? 3-pointer with 8:45 until halftime, but the Jaguars built the lead to 40-28 and led 40-31 at the break.
With Southern ahead 42-31 a minute into the second half, TSU ? which ditched its full-court pressure, after the Jaguars kept beating the setup for open looks, in favor of a stingy man-to-man halfcourt set ? went n a 19-6 surge, going up 50-46 on Sollie Norwood?s 3-pointer with 12:14 left in the game.
Southern shot 13-for-24, 54.2 percent, and made five 3-pointers in the first half but was 8-for-24, 33.3 percent, after halftime.
?We needed to regain our composure (at halftime),? Courtney said.
The Jaguars then answered with a 10-1 spurt to regain the lead at 56-51 on Bradford?s 3-pointer with 8:22 remaining.
Southern couldn?t separate further from there, allowing TSU to come back.
?We rushed at times, when we didn?t have to,? Spivery said. ?I guess, with a young team like that, sometimes it?s expected when they don?t recognize situations. It?s something they?re going to have to do.?
Notes
Southern was outrebounded 41-23, with Guillory as the team?s unlikely leader in that count. ? Southern junior guard Joe Holliday missed his second straight game with a hip injury. ? Up next, Southern hosts Prairie View at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. That game is the second of a stretch of four conference games in seven days.
