Gospel Superstar Tonex Shocks The World; Announces Retirement From Gospel Music Industry

In a shocking revelation to the gospel music listenership of Los Angeles, Award-winning gospel recording artist Tonex told Aundrae Russell that he is retiring from the gospel music industry. The popular, cutting edge artist was invited by Aundrae Russell, host of the SPREAD THE WORD gospel music program (Sundays, noon ? 6pm) to talk about his participation in the BET Gospel Celebration. He mentioned the highly anticipated television taping, but then shocked the world and Aundrae with the revelation that he is retiring from the industry. Tonex went on to describe his bewilderment in the short-comings he has beheld in gospel music. Playa hating, back biting and a lack of respect for the music was lamented by Tonex who also took the moment to be very candid about his divorce from wife Yvette.

I believe he called alot out that needs to be said. Your biggest critics are in the church..... That is why I thank God for deliverance from people!

Visit Tonex's blog.... http://www.kjlhradio.com/tonex.htm

Pray for that brotha, cause I know sometimes I feel the same. But then, I remember what Christ has done and is doing for me, so I cant give up my responsibilities that he has given me.

To who much is given, much is required.

I havent listened to this interview but he wasn't selling that much music anyways... Bye.

Also, This is not a shock for the world.

Salutations 2 all,

After long contemplation and much financial & emotional hardship I have decided that Tonex needs go on hiatus from the music industry. I have tried very hard to endure all that I can from being misunderstodd to being down right lied on and I don't physically or emotionally have the capacity to continue on anymore under the current circumstances. My record Label ZLG (Zomba Label Group) has repeatedly ignored my requests for help and they just don't get me as an artist. But I'm not blaming them, it's hard for anyone to really get me as an artist because I am not the normal type of artist. I bow out. And I don't know when I'm coming back.

Honestly I don't feel that I fit into anyone's catergory but my own, but in a world that's filled with labels, sections & catergories people can't function if they can't put you in a certain box.
I don't fit totally into Gospel because I don't sing JESUS JESUS JESUS all day and I don't fit into mainstream because I don't sing SEX SEX SEX all day either. I'm at a serious crossroads right now in life. And I don't have the answers. I cried and cried and cried last night to God for help because I can't go any further.

I'm not writing this so that people can feel sorry, I'm blogging my thoughts out. And I think I need to just bow out gracefully while I'm still on a fairly successful run off of OTB. I will continue to sell my projects online and things like that via YOTONEX but I think I need to just dissappear until I can find a place where I can live at least comfortably. Right now I am an 8 time Stellar Award winning , 2 time Dove award winning, Grammy nominated, Gold Selling artist with no furniture, Divorced, No chairs, No money. The label doesn't give me advances because my contract a is real wack. And they don't communicate.I don't know what else to say world.

What's funny is I still have people writing to me kicking me while I'm down. So now I say y'all can have it. Tonex will be out of your way once and for all. You win. Please congratulate Ex-Ministries, some Chick from England named Alexandria and a host of other so called Christians who have literally destroyed, defamated , embarrased and fatigue my life, my family and my spirit. I'm done y'all. Really. Sorry that I let some of you down but it wasn't intentional. I don't have ANY options right now so I have to do what I have to do which is "Nothing".
They don't even ask me what the real deal is but they use and twist my words for controversy sake to sell CD's DVD's and magazines. I had no idea Christians get down like this ????

Now the Gospel industry can finally be at rest because the funny guy isn't around any more.
Lauryn Hill said it best. " You superstar you Stupid star they hail you to nail you no matter who you are." Until I find peace and a real reason to get back in this game called the record business, I retire. I might still write for others and stuff like that but as for me and my house?,
y'all take it and have it because i've been nothing but slung in through the mud. I haven't done everything right, but what I 've been expericencing here recently is wrong.

My faith in Christianity is fading because I'm not understanding alot of "Christians" mentality when it comes to love. I have found nothing but anguish, lies, hatefulness and deception.
I believe in the Kingdom of God and I definitely believe in Jesus. But western civilization's version of Christ is very disturbing because they have totally disconnected Him from real life.
He lives in THEIR church and THEIR church only. I don't wanna hear any scriptures and I don't wanna hear any Oh, God's gonna bring you out type stuff right now. I need a miracle and I need it fast. I've still been pastoring and that's been the only thing that really brings me joy, to see others blessed. But now I'm at the point where I'm drained and I don't have the physical energy anymore to continue on. God gives me the strength to deliever a rhema word every week for others but it's crazy when you still need one yourself.

I see so many Gospel Artist that literally HATE each other and when I see them celebrated like oh God is so pleased with them and I'm just being me and now I'm the ANTI CHRIST ? I'm like y'all *****z can have this. I can't take the fakeness no more. I'm wide open and now I'm like y'all take a hit cuz I ain't got nothing to lose. I've lost everything so you really can't hurt me anymore than I've already been hurt. And that's what hurts. So many people call themselves ministers but they don't minister they COMPETE. I'm gonna tell y'all the truth what you see on TV ain't real..... because if you're "real" then you're a sinner, if you're real then you're out of the will of God. But I don't have the energy to be fake. I never have been and I never will be.
Until God sends me a word through somebody for real that don't care that I'm Tonex but cares about the man of God who really needs the love of Christ to be demonstrated through a human being , I don't wanna hear it.

This is not a ploy to get you to worry about me or start more rumors; so let's clarify something right now......tonex is IS NOT leaving "Gospel" to go sing the dreaded "R&B". TONEX is retiring from an industry and religion that has completly stipped and cut and scarred his heart to the point he feels there's no repair. And yes I blame CHURCH FOLKS. You have caused so much hurt and pain to so many people that needed to see the Love of a Real Christ. I'm done with Church. I'm all about kingdom now. And in my pursuit of the real Jesus I leave your fictious, vindictive country club and cancel my membership to the industry and denounce it. I don't fit in and I don't want to. Whatever my mission is for God I wanna do it with the right heart and the right spirit. But that's just it I don't have a spirit right now. I'm too bruised to know what to feel.

Maybe one day someone with real discernment will know how to minister to someone like me right now. But if there was someone like that then I'm sure that Michael Jackson, Dennis Rodman, and some random heavily pierced skater on the beach would have experienced that real agape love by now. So until I find it , I've gotta get out of this matrix before I end up never wanting to sing again ever.

Thanx to every person that wrote to me and I do my best to write you all back because I want you to know that I'm a real person with real feelings and a real family. I read everything.
thanx to Yolanda Adams for being a real big sister to me. Kirk you really came through for me in Houston, I'm grateful. Judith McCallister thank u so much.

Until you hear from me again musically.

Kingdom Kulture Kool

One thing that we should all take notice of is what the young man said...It is time for us to stop playing church and get about doing God's business. Young people need to see christian people doing God's work not the devil's work.

This young man is very discouraged and hurt over how the gospel industry is fighting and clowning. He is not able to see God in some of these people. Preachers, ministers, elders, gospel singers, or whatever you want to call yourselves this is not about you, it is about doing God's will, not your will.

My prayer is that this young man will allow God to continue to guide his life and know that God did not bring him this far to leave him now.

I wish him well and God's speed in whatever God desires for his life.

Hope this kat finds the answer he's looking for. All you have to say to one like that is "Wait on God"

Did you read his blog or listened to his interview?

He has more issues than that.

Does this sound like somebody who is looking at fake people? No, it doesnt. This looks like somebody who is in the ministry to make money. That's his issue. He did not make money and he is mad about it.

Doc, I do believe that he did make money and lots of it. His wife may have taken more than he expected, but he made money. Maybe with his divorce and the music business the way it is left him totally empty.......spiritually. I know the ins and outs of the Gospel Music Industry and believe me it is all he said it is. More secular and non-Christian producers come over to the Christian side because they believe that they can tap into something that is virtually untapped. If you ever have to work behind the scenes with some Gospel group managers, radio DJs, etc....... trust you would know. The Gospel Music Industry is the most biggest and corrupt industry in the music world. This is a known fact. In the secular music industry atleast you know who your enemies are and what they stand for. In the gospel industry, everyone portray themselves as your friends and Christian brothers and sisters. It is really messed up, but I guess that is why some Christian singers go back to secular while others go back because of the money.

When you are doing a marvelous work for God, you will have challenges. Satan gets very busy and tries all kinds of things to keep you discouraged. If he can do the previous, then others that may be blessed by your ministry gift will miss out. Right now he may feel like throwing in the towel. The prophet Jeremiah felt this way. Yet he did not give up and end the end Jeremiah was blessed and his Prophetic Ministry which was of God prevailed. If I could speak to Tonex right now. I would tell him how much his music has ministered to me and my family spiritually and anyone that feels what he is feeling to read and hold on to Ephesians 6:10-19.

Be Strong!!!

I agree Bulldog.

My pastor just preached Sunday that for every mountain high there is a valley low. Here it is 26 days into the new year, and I am like what's next.

We wonder why we are being attacked so.... but I now know that it is because satan is seeing exactly what God has in store for us and he wants to discourage us in hopes of defeating us, but I declare Victory on this day and any other day. I have no choice but to trust God and allow him to move me where He wants me to be.

I conversed with a friend at church last night and this morning when I got to work he sent me a message.... "I saw greatness all over you last night Reggie....this is your year!"

He confirmed the vision God has given me, and it explains why I am being attacked by the enemy.

Sunday I was reading the following:

John 15:18-27

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Damn I'd be mad if I were BROKE too. Ministry or not...he made money for the record companies, should he not be compensated?

Do we as Christians make records to make money or do we make records to help spread the word of God?

Should we only use our God-given talents to sing/perform secular music if we want to make a career of it?

Should God-Given Talents be use to glorify God? and if we do use it to glorify God should we do it freely?

I can honestly feel some of what ole boy is talking about.

I'm not sure you can boil his problems down to just seeking money. It sounds more like its just another slap in the face to someone who's already discouraged.

BP, that is what I read and analyze also. Like I stated earlier, I truly believe that he has/had money, but it was just another slap in his face with his divorce and other trials.

I feel the same way. I am increasingly growing tired of "church folk". But I have made up in my mind that I go where God wants me to go and will get his word no matter who likes or doesn't like me.

Now, I am feeling this...

Growing up, I use to think men shouldn't get all emotional or show thier feelings when praising the Lord.

Oh, but I thank God for change. I prayed and prayed for a closer relationship, and it has brought me to where I am today, and I am still growing.

Just thinking of where I started and where I am today. Anyway He wants to bless me, I'll be satisfied.

Both.

Let's be real now! You have to make a living, docmump.

docmump said:

I trust that this was a rhetorical question.

docmump said:

It depends. The laborer is worthy of his hire.

One of my visions is to have our worship team hired out to play for corporate events around the city...to be on staff at our church; salaried to minister in song and able to earn from the corporate world for their musical skills. Also, to have intercessors on staff; salaried at our church and able to go to other congregations and venues to intercede, conduct conferences on intercession - and be compensated for their time and the work that goes into getting it done.

When I go out to do the work of an evangelist and someone gets saved, delivered, healed, has demons cast out, etc., as God works through the availability of my ministering, do I expect them to pay me for what God does? NO. Is it right for all who are gathered there to give in to my ministry for the time that I spend praying, fasting, studying the Word, etc., just to prepare to minister in those ways? YES.
