To GSU,SU,TSU,and SWAC fans in general

I?m a little late posting this, and I do a little rambling, however, I was intending to post this last year, but here tis.

I fail to understand why SWAC schools continue to schedule games with the University of Houston.
Most of their fans think it's a slap in the face to schedule predominantly black schools, however, they need the fans that Grambling and Southern bring, to pump up their attendance figures.

I?ve been a die hard HBCU fan and supporter all my life, however, when I moved to Houston in 1965, I became a fan of UH because of Elvin Hayes and Don Chaney, Guy Lewis, Bill Yeoman and others who were really connected to the Black community in Houston at a time when that was not very popular. I've remained a fan of those gentlemen to this day.
Times were different, the people that ran the athletic department were different, and the fans were different, and classy. A large number of present days UH fans and alumni are about the most insensitive, anti-anything black, and with an almost nauseating superiority complex that i've seen in quite a while, which is why UH the most dislike school in the greater Houston area among most minorities.

Grambling played UH last year, I don't blame them for that, they got paid big-time, however, I blame them for performing with the UH band at halftime, that made no sense. If UH thought they could jam, "let them do it all by themselves".

After all of the courtesy the GSU band extended to the UH band, Grambling damn near had to get permission to play while in the stands, that's right, they put a UH representative in the Grambling band area, to let the band know when they could play, I understand that the GSU people just ignored that person in the second half and played at will.
The Grambling game, as far as UH was concerned was a huge success. The game drew one of the largest crowds of the year, (which helps with the NCAA attendance mandate for D1 schools) they got the win, and some of their delirious fan even think they won the halftime show, go figure.

Houston plays TSU thanksgiving weekend this year, what was Blackwell thinking, oh wait you got to have a brain to think. If Blackwell was not an UH guy, they don't schedule this game period. Can you say Bayou Classic weekend?

Southern University is scheduled to play Houston in 08, why? Most UH fans treat that is if they are doing poor SU a favor. That game just means SU will bring 15-20k to a 29k stadium, and yet again UH will get their attendance figures up. Who needs who?

I could go forever about this topic, instead I will post some links to various Houston Message boards and let you read some of the threads on this topic, then form your opinions, because I just might be only one that feels this way about the entire situation.

Hopefully, the NCAA will put a ban on 1-A's playing 1-AA's. The lower teir 1-A's should really complain!! They at least need to go back to the old rule where 1-AA games only counted once every 4 years.

First of all, there is no 1-AA's anymore, everybody is 1-A.

Secondly, why ban? In every sport, bigger teams need PRACTICE GAMES and smaller teams NEED MONEY. This even happens in high school. Its a WIN WIN situation.

If a 1-A wants to load up on 1-AA opponents, then let them. Just as long as they realize their Bowl game consequences.

That is not true. Actually, there is no 1-A anymore if you want to look at it like that. I choose not to because they simply changed the name to something stupid. However, even under the new "naming" system, they are both STILL under 1-AA and 1-A guidelines.

Also, it does not matter what other schools, etc...do. Right is right and wrong is wrong. 1-AA and 1-A do not need to play. PERIOD.

the sweet deal GSU got is nothing what the rest of the SWAC received from UH...TSU has ties to UH and I know didn't get that GSU got and SU didn't get the same rate also...

If GSU got what they did last year, their back in Houston

Division I football has two classifications. The Bowl Championship Series or BCS and the Football Championship Subdivision or FCS. There is no more I-A and I-AA. The rules, however, remain the same, but the NCAA did allow more games to count between the two classifications. I don't see any problem with FCS schools playing BCS schools when there is a financial benefit for both or if the FCS school has a legit shot at being competitive. Each HBCU has to make that decision. For example, if Jackson State is set to play Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, the Tigers should only agree to that if they are offered more than they would make in a non-conference home game and if they feel the game will be competitive. However, if Southern Mississippi offered another HBCU with a much lower home attendance average the same money I see no problem with that school accepting the deal. It is simple economics. Money games in football is no different than money games in basketball, except in football, contracts can run up to 500,000 dollars while we only get 40 to 50,000 for the money games in basketball.

As for the University of Houston's fans and alumni, no school can control the behavior and beliefs of their fans and alumni.

In basketball, everyone is Division 1. In football, 1-A needs to remain separate from 1-AA. If this was not getting out of hand, I would not see too big of problem with it. But why would USM play Southeastern LA rather than LA-Monroe? Lower teir 1-A's take payouts too and they don't require return games.

Ego. Also USM aint a big school like LSU so they can't pay La-Monroe the amount of money they pay a Southeatern. La-Monroe is looking for a bigger payday than playing a USM. La Monroe would want a return game as well. USM aint nobody. THey are a lower tier 1-A school too. Hell USM probably need to be calling the Texas A&Ms and UTs so they can get a payday and go play at those schools home stadiums. LOL. Ole Miss and MS State are just lucky they are in the SEC and share revenue because they are lower tier 1-A schools too hidden in SEC clothes. That's why they can't win the SEC in football or compete for bigger bowls on the regular in that conference. And just think, they look at USM like a 1-AA school.

MS State and Ole Miss shole don't belong in the SEC. If only one of them were in the SEC, they might be alright.

Would any other Third Coast Tiger care to comment before I do? Better yet, MHurd97, would be best to comment to this.

I do not see anything wrong with any of the SWAC schools playing UH. In fact, I think it is well overdue for TSU vs. UH in football. The two schools are neighbors and it just make sense.

UH has had attendance problems and will have a hard time packing their stadium of a consistent basis. It is an opportunity for TSU to get some money out of the deal, eliminate travel costs, and pick-up a few more fans in the city as the game will be talked about. it is also possible that it could help us recruit some more talented players.

UH is not as white as let's say UT, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. There are a lot of Asians, blacks, and Hispanics. I do not think their fans are that adverse to the matchup.

I would venture to say that if HBCUs played a lot of white schools, its core fan base would not like it. We can just look at Tn State vs Jackson State, I'm sure their fans look forward to that game more than their conference matchups.

the date is a concern for me...GSU and SU got prime dates for UH and TSU will get a season finale which could blow up on both team's faces knowing Houston weather...I'm anxious to see TSU's payout....$200K is the going rate minimum

I don't believe the payout is a big deal especially since we don't have to pay any travel cost. In the case of GSU and SU, a bulk of that amount I bet went to the traveling cost. The band and the players, your talking about 200 or more folks If we weren't playing against them that weekend we wouldn't be getting any type of payout, so therefore any type of money is a step in the positive direction. What type of money did GSU, and SU get from UH.

Your comment is the problem with college sports, everyone is so worried
and consumed about money.

We may or may not take a lump that weekend, but its still an opportunity for seniors to have their last game in houston because we all know most swac players are not going to play football after college.

It doesn't matter about the weather, no matter what, the game will go on and TSU will get paid. So if there is any cause for any concern, UH should worry about getting blown up. We will be playing in a game that otherwise wouldn't have been played...

Good or bad depending upon how you look at it furthermore, with our record over the past four years how can we dictate an earlier season matchup? The only problem I envision is that if we have a ticket to Birmingham in hand, do you play to win this game or do you play to make it to Birmingham.... healthy?

There are too many ways of looking at the pros and cons of a late matchup.

there's a small line in these contracts that puts UH (and most teams in similair situations) to where if weather permits the game from being played they don't owe anyone.

I believe what MHurd97 is saying (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that if its raining and only 3 people show up; we get paid. Now the game being cancelled due to weather is another thing.

I have concerns with this game, especially if at the very least a percentage of the money generated from this game does not go into an account for further investments directly related to upgrading the football program in one facet or another.

We can talk offline about this. We need to talk anyway.

C_LeB28,

I know your in a position too. Have you scene the contract? I doubt that the athletic director had the autonomy to sign off on this contract. Most HBCU contracts from athletics and other programs go back through the legal center of the campus. Unfortunately, the legal team has had many instances were they have signed off of contracts (have not explored other options) that later come back to haunt us.
