Prairie View A&M has a new head football coach with 63 scholarships. Mark this day down in history. What is we gone do? Actually I was fixin to get sced till I saw his name was C.L. Whittington. Congrats on getting a new coach PV, but with a name like that, it won't be long before Doug and the other SWAC coaches take his lunch money.

Whittington introduced as new Prairie View football coach

The Associated Press

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (AP) -- Former Houston Oilers defensive back C.L. Whittington was hired Friday as head coach at Prairie View A&M, which has had 14 straight losing seasons.

"We were looking for someone who exhibited a strong ability to recruit in the Texas area as well as instill discipline in our football team," Athletic director Charles McClelland said. "We need someone to come in and immediately instill that type of discipline as well bring in the top quality talent needed to turn our program around."

A Beaumont native, Whittington was a four-year letterman at Prairie View from 1970 to 1973 and was team captain. He previously served as an assistant coach at the school.

"It has been a lifelong dream of mine to coach at Prairie View since I attended the university and represented it on the coaching and professional level," Whittington said. "Just the idea of coming home and putting the program back on track is a dream of mine."

He replaces Larry Dorsey, fired in December after winning only five games in three years. The Panthers were 1-10 last season.

Whittington played for the Oilers from 1974 to 1979 and led the team in interceptions in 1976.

His coaching career spans 22 years, including periods as an assistant at Prairie View and Texas Southern, and in Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy. At Prairie View, he coached defensive backs, wide receivers and special teams for five seasons and was a part of the last coaching staff to post a non-losing record, 5-5 in 1988.

Whittington left Prairie View before the 1989 season to become defensive coordinator at Texas Southern.

PV was losing when they has a full alottment of scholarships. I am glad that the A&M system decided to step up and put up the money. Don't look for players to flock to pv just because they offer scholarships...it is still PV. But I am happy for the forward thinking of the program. I still think they shafted Dorsey. The man was making strides with nothing and then PV dumps him. I look for the new coach to get JUCO players and down and out transfers to build the program. They will still lose many games yearly. It will be years before they get to a .500 season. Good luck.

Coach:

The A&M System (or State of Texas) do not fund athletics. It is derived soley from student fees and charging admissions to sporting events.:lecture:

uhhhhh...that may be why you are where you are.

Do we need to clarify?

pshhh...nevermind...they'll figure it out in about another 20 years or so....!

Y'all ain't making no sense up in hur (especially Coach).

Look @ the IMMEDIATE impact the "change" that occurred to our bballl team has made! :lecture: What? What? Also, Jags/Tigers, beware of our baseball team. Oh, it's true. It's damn true! :lecture: We're quietly assembling something that you won't believe. Denial ain't just a river in Africa mane. Our mens' bball team is 3-0 SWAC and has numerous accolades for being competitive w/ EVERY single team we've faced. That ain't no joke mane.

To say that this man (C.L.) won't make an immediate impact is like saying that PV won't be playing in the SCG - VI. LOL

I guess that Bill Snyder and his staff are bums huh? Look @ what they did and I'm sure that we'll do likewise. I guess that "formula" for instant success and instant winning doesn't work huh? Glad peeps like you aren't on that man's staff. Even ALL of his disciples have gone on to do other GREAT things w/ the SAME formula at other schools! Remember, we did well to compete w/ nothing the last few years. We'll beat you soundly w/ a lil' bit of something and you know it. It really doens't take much talent to win in the SWAC because of bonehead coaches who don't know how to coach or lead.

FYI COACH: PV NEVER had a full allotment of scholarships. The most that we ever had was 35 during the 80s.

I remember when C.L. Whittington played with the Houston Oilers. Dude was a decent player and from the looks of his resume, he should turn out to be a good hire.

Actually, PV is in a good situation. They now have 63 scholarships and a new head man/coaching staff. This "new" start should help in getting players to come on board.

In recruiting, the three essentials are: 1. Facilities 2. How soon I get to play 3. Social life. I don't know about their facilities, but number 2 is easy cuz new comers will get a chance to play and with #3, the university might be the ideal distance from Houston
to offer a social life yet maintaining it's own "on campus" identity.

Good luck...we can't wait to kick a good teams azz in Dallas.

The pv losing trend will continue. If C.L is around in 4 years, then the 5th year may see the scholarships take affect. Don't look for pv to be a .500 team until 2007 or 2008.

Man, y'all just don't get it.

PV peeps, PLEASE do not release our recruits signing on the dotted line in Feb. Seriously, don't release it. LOL When we roll into SWAC play 3-0 or 4-0, then they'll believe. They don't know what's about to happen or what's walking our campus currently. :shame: Damn.... :smh:

Remember, it doesn't take much to win in the SWAC w/ these bonehead arse coaches.

Gram also produced a near loss to 1 Div II school. :shame:
Gram also also produced a near loss to 1 NAIA school. :shame:

Damn... How's that for productivity? Ever wonder why the SWAC didn't respect this "fluke" season? :smh:
