These are the '06-'07 #s reported by TEA:
Texas public schools consist of more than 1,200 school districts and charters, 8,000 campuses,
and nearly 4.6 million students who are primarily Hispanic (46%) and
White (36%). More than half of the students are economically disadvantaged and
16% are limited English proficient. These students are served by
over 300,000 teachers who earn an average of $46,000 annually.

It gets better. :|

Guess who's continually moving in state and increasing their #s? :read: In public schools here, we've been tripled, populous wise :read: by non-English speaking people (non citizens). That stat didn't read like that 20-30 years ago. :read: And this is part of my state tax $ that's going to subsidize. :read: Private schools are popping up like crazy around these parts and that deal a few yrs ago allowing priv schools to compete in UIL was just a "start" that indicated the trend was evident many, many years ago. :read:

I'll let the cat out of the bag. :| *I decided not to since that was privy 411 about PV and it's recently developed Medical Academy* I wouldn't be surprised if PV were to become an HSI at some point. :| PV does have a mandate in place to augment it's Hispanic population. :read:

ESL and Bi-lingual teachers don't get stipends because they AREN'T needed.

As for private schools, all that glitters ain't gold. I have yet to have a private school student come into my classroom and be able to keep up with what I'm teaching. Maybe they come from the wrong private schools.

Oh, I agree. I peep'd this game a little while ago. Esp w/ habitual trouble-makers w/ money in the public system whose parents didn't have a choice but to go private. :read:

ESL? (like SON said...English Second Language?)

I thought the districts were craving bilingual instructors. Back when TAKS was TABS lol, I recall reading where blacks were the #2 group behind whites. Guess I hadn't really noted over the last 20+ where we'd been tripled here. :read:

Wait a minute. AusitnISD offers a $3000 sign on bonus for billigual teachers. My school is about 90% Hispanic and is Pre-K through 5th grade. Our school's billingual system is based on :

Pre-K 100% Spanish
Kinder 90% Spanish 10% English
1st 80% Spanish 20% English
2nd 70% Spanish 30% English

and so on...............

Now generally speaking, how in the world does this district expect studetns to be fluent by 5th grade to take the English TAKS? I don't know. I know that for the past couple of years, our shcool has been between 2 and 4 students from being academically unacceptable. There are families I know for a fact that come str8 from Mexico, and enroll their kids into our schools. That's not even what bothers me. I could care or less that immigrants are coming to Texas.......

What bothers me is that there are several free English programs available to low-income and non-English speaking families in this city and people just don't take advantage of them.:upset: I just need to be able to communicate with these parents! Good thing that I can actually speak a nice amount of Spanish.

if Texas is bad to you...don't even come into other states

It's not the worst by far. But it's not the best (overall w/ 8K+ campuses) either. Just looking @ the #s or do the #s tell lies?

I'm not trying to be funny but I didn't think or know there were this many spanish speaking people here. :emlaugh: Man, I'm really isolated and have been living in that little 2-inch world I spoke about earlier. Well hell... I didn't know blacks had been tripled here.

Well, I can't speak Spanish a lick, and am not trying to learn it so that I can communicate with people in my ENGLISH CLASS.

no isht P. In Houston there is no such thing as white schools or black schools anymore. They are either black and mexican or white & Mexican, or my favorite, Mexican& more Mexican!

Maybe the reason private school kids struggle in regular school is that they aren't being taught the TAKS. Private schools don't get money from the state so they can almost teach anyway they want.
A lot of parents send their kids to private school to avoid the TAKS, especially seniors. DISD teachers really do it to ensure their kids get an education without fear of violence in the classroom at some DISD schools.

As for our increasing Hispanic population in Texas schools. You ask most DISD schools who they want to put up with in their classes. Hispanics lead by a mile as most of them want to learn unlike thier black counterparts.
Like one person told me DISD is 70% and they might as well take over since we (blacks) don't care about education or graduating.

And to answer the question of why Hispanic families don't bother with the English programs. Easy-
why would you bother to learn English when stores have signs in English and Spanish?
Why learn English when at the school they have Hispanics (many won't talk to someone that has learned to speak Spanish mind you) that speak Spanish?
A few Texas schools in have been to have been told to only hire Hispanics.
And many of these kids are placed in grade levels based on age and not skill. That's why you have so many overage Hispanics in the 9th grade that dropout. They really belong (skill wise) is a lower grade. Some ESL classes help, but many of those kids don't belong there. They know English (thank you BET), they stay in those classes to be with their own kind and to avoid the hatred from black kids in some schools.
