THINGS LOOKING UP IN PRAIRIE VIEW

By Mike Marzelli/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF

This is the seventh installment in a nine-part series profiling each of UAPB?s Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents.

Prairie View A&M may only be eight years removed from its NCAA-record 80 game losing streak, but third-year head coach Henry Frazier has taken the Panthers a long way down the road back to respectability.

Frazier took over in 2004 with A&M coming off two consecutive one-win seasons and immediately tripled the team?s win total. Last season the Panthers finished 5-6 ? their best season since 1988 ? and earned the program?s first SWAC road win in 17 years.

More importantly for the fans in Texas, Frazier made good on his promise to improve Prairie View?s standing against rival Texas Southern. The Panthers downed the Tigers in 2004 for the first time in 17 years, and Frazier became the first A&M coach to win the Labor Day Classic twice in a row since 1963-64 when they repeated the feat last season.

The next goal for Frazier is to guide the program to its first winning season since 1976, and the chance to do so is there in 2006.

?We?re not a laughing stock anymore, and that was my first order of business. I wanted to bring respectability back to this once proud program, and I think we?ve accomplished that,? Frazier said. ?The work is not done though. We still need to improve and we?re looking to take another step towards that this season.

Prairie View started last season 1-4 before finishing 4-2, and it is looking to carry that momentum over into this season. Back are 16 starters, including eight on each side of the ball. The Panthers also boast five preseason All-SWAC selections, and were predicted to finish third in the SWAC?s Western Division.

One area of the team that stands out as arguably Prairie View?s strongest is special teams, where both sophomore placekicker Mario Sanchez and senior punter Eric Hernandez were First Team selections in the preseason.

Offensively the Panthers lone all-league choice was offensive lineman Bennett Fagan, who is one of five returning starters up front.

Junior Chris Gibson is the most experienced returning quarterback, but Gibson only competed 15 passes for 143 yards in 2005. Gibson and redshirt junior Mark Spivey have competed throughout camp for the starting job, which Frazier deems the squad?s ?biggest question for this season.?

Frazier has said his top priority this season is establishing a legitimate passing attack. The Panthers averaged a SWAC-low 100 yards per game through the air last season, and had only two receivers catch more than 10 balls.

As a means to that end, Frazier signed six wide receiver recruits, and hopes that will have the position looking up.

?We couldn?t throw the ball when we needed to, bottom line,? Frazier said. ?We were too one-dimensional, and we need to fix that.?

Junior running back Arnell Fontenot rushed for 849 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore, and gives Frazier a solid threat carrying the football again in ?06.

The running game will also benefit from the return of Kerry Wilson, who was A&M?s second leading rusher a year ago and gained a career-high 118 yards against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Prairie View?s defense improved last season as the year went along, en route to finishing second in the SWAC in rushing yards allowed per game at 121.3.

Senior linebacker Van Sallier was voted Second Team All-SWAC in the preseason after making 80 stops, and defensive end Jermaine McGhee leads the charge up front.

Junior corner back Hakeem Muhammad was also an all-league choice after earning SWAC Newcomer of the Year honors last season.

Place Kicker Mario Sanchez wont be back. Something happenned with his grades during the off season. With that being said it still should be a great year for the Panthers. My preseason prediction is 6-5 and possibly 8-3 with the right turn of events. Theyll beat TSU for the third year in a row as well as Edward Waters, Langston, UAPB, Alcorn, and either Southern or Alabama State which were both highly competitive games last season that were played on the road. The J-state matchup and Annie Mea game could go either way also but theyll be on the road for the Panthers and we all know about those good ole home team calls SWAC refs have a reputation for making.

POSSIBLE TWO BIGGEST UPSETS OF THE YEAR: PV 38 GSU 24 AT THE COTTON BOWL AND PV 28 SU 10 AT TULLY STADIUM IN H-TOWN

The score at half time was 3-0 if im not mistaken. If not for a flurry of scores in the third quarter yall wouldve been sweatin that one out. We are considerably deeper this year so fatigue wont be a factor again this season. How many SU players left the field on stretchers that game? Admit it or not yall knew PV was in da house that night!

Make me understand how you have arguably the biggest athletic budget in the conference as well as the name noteriety that you have attained and yet still produce such a sad group of losers as you did last season. I mean others SWAC schools would kill to get the type of alumni donations and support yall get and yet and still you produce a 4-5 LOSER that drops contest to Valley, Annie Mea, and Alcorn just to name a few.I just dont understand.

I don't know why I'm arguing with this fool. I bet he wore a paper bag in his dorm room as he heard his team get raped year in and year out. I guess PV fans and JSU fans are the same.

The same bag you wore as you watched your team get raped last season in front of a national television viewing audience at the Bayou Classic

Using GSU to smack! :smh: I know now that you can't smack SU with PVU! :lmao:

Great One, where's the moderator who regulates smack on the sports board?

:topic:
Back on topic. True, we've made strides. Me personally, I've now considered this season a wash as our kicker is not on the field of play. Don't know if he's enrolled in school. Hope so. At least he should attempt to complete his degree plan. :smh:

Special teams play was going to be our sole strength heading into the fall. Now? :shame: Down the drain w/ the 60yd field goal attempt. :( No 40+ yd field goals for PV which means zero points once our one-dimensional offense is halted @ the 20-35yd lines. :smh:

I wonder how many teams will run back our PATs for 2 points. :smh:

P,

What happened, man?

Did your boy not make his grades or what?

I'm assuming Hernandez is going to do it all now?

Its really good your confident in your team. I feel the same way about TSU, but the only difference between me and you, I'm not going to talk smack. We have the same amount of of starters coming back and the whole offensive line who had a great running season last year, we are going to surprise everyone, but I expect this from my team.

I don't know NECK. :smh: All I know is he's not on the team. Can't tell you if it was related to academics, etc. :(

Guy has an awfully strong leg. A true freshman and I know I've seen him kick a 60yrder pre-game warmup. However, pre-game isn't "in-game" so...

I don't know who's kicking. I'm a lil' salty. :| Send us BA. ;) We'd give him ALL the opportunities to kick he could ever want. :gift:

They won't beat JSU this year.... AAMU, maybe.

I don't know TP. We have a lot of new faces on O and esp on D. ;)

Did you see where our "returnee" (starters) count went from 21 down to 16. lol Frazier isn't bullishtting. Kids who step up are going to get the playing time.

BTW, here's a slight pic I caught during practice of our new starting strong safety lol and the returning free safety. lol The new guy said (quoting) "let'em come across da' middle if they wanna'.... get the ambulances ready" lol The way he was popping our wideouts, I can ONLY imagine what it's gonna' sound like on the field of play against opposition. :)

Panth, they will not be able to see our WRs.

I sincerely almost hope they don't. I saw a lot of ambulances/hurt folx last fall. And most of'em weren't on PV's side.

I think these guys are finally adopting Frazier's philosophy. Knock the hell out some people. :|

You still won't be on JSU's level. Comegy is not gonna lose his first homecoming. ..and I doubt that you all have the talent we have.

I don't care if it was Lou Holtz first JSU homecoming. The only way you can possibly win homecoming is resheduling it against Paul Quinn and pray that they are fatigued from the ride to Jackson from Dallas.

Panth, let's just say that the ones that quit on Bell last year has quit again.

You all only had 200 yards of offense against JSU last year. You will be lucky to match that this year....:lmao:

And you still got 25 points scored on you and LOST the game

Shhhh, please don't utter that to another soul

The team you played last year, is our second and 3rd string this year. Trust me, you won't get 200 yards unless you are VASTLY improved.

In fact, we will probably put those 3rd stringers in the game in Jackson just so they can lay some wood on ya'll for payback. :smash:
