The Rushing Record(Emmitt vs Walter)

GR:

Emmitt is Good; but Sayers he ain't. If I was drafting a running back and I had my pick of them all I would take
Brown, Sayers, Payton or Simpson, and Sanders in that order. I like Emmitt but he's not in my top five.

Regards.

And you'd miss out on the most complete back to play the game. Emmitt only knows how to do EVERYTHING a back needs to do. And well.

And Rice wouldn't be nearly the "great" he's considered today if he had gone to Tampa Bay or some other non-passing team. Some players benefit from the system they are in. You think Steve Young got considerably better in San Fran after struggling in Tampa??? NO!!! He simply enjoyed the benefits of being in the 49er system.

Been a Tampa Bay fan all of its life. Jerry's fate would have been the same a Steve's: they would not have been able to figure out what to do with him and he would have ended up in SanFrancisco anyway. That means that he probably would have missed hook-ups with Montana, but he would have taken less hits while he was in Tampa. Therefore, he would have been the first WR to play into his 50's. Thus, he would end up with the same numbers.

I'd take those any of those five and go to war with them anyday. Payton was as well rounded, if not better, than Smith. He caught passes, blocked, and ran it as well. And as stated earlier by somebody else, he carried Chicago by himself for a long time. Brown was just flat-out dominate and imposed his will on defenses. Saunders and Simpson were more one diminsional, but as you stated earlier, the system does matter. So I would keep them in the system that maximizes their talents. But they still carried their teams and made them much better than they would have been without them. Sayers was also well rounded and he was not called upon to block; again, the system. I'll take any of them and stack them up against anybody.

This is one time that I wish we had a fantasy league where we could take our picks of all the players who have played and match up against each other. If you come across such an animal let me know so we match up and see who would win.:)

Regards.

Paytone was well rounded....no doubt about that.
But where did he take Chicago before he got help on offense and defense?

Barry Sanders was the most one diminsional RB ever. All he could ever do was come in, run the ball on 1st down, run the ball on second down, and then go tot he sidelines so the Lions could figure out how they were going to pick up that 3rd and 12.

Barry is one of the most over-rated athletes ever.

Y do folks always find something to hate on about? Just give Emmitt the props that he deserves. We always have this hateful and begrudging attitude. Just be happy for the man. Who cares who's the greatest of all time. Did u hear Emmitt say that he is the greatest? He is just trying to be the best he can be and help Dallas win. For some people Payton will always be better because the image of him is still engrained, just like when McGwire broke Maris' home run record, you had nay sayers about that.

Since the topic is on rushing records and the like, that's exactly the point. We know what Payton did with no suppport for most of his career; he was the all-time leading rusher and the total yardage leader. The question is how well would Emmit have done in those circumstances. He had better support for a longer period of time. I doubt if he would have done as well on the teams that Payton played on, but the fact is that we will never know.

Emmit deserves his props for what he has done; nobody is slighting him on that. But he's not in my top five.

Regards.

Walter Jerry Payton is the greatest running back ever. He did it all. He caught balls out of the backfield, ran touchdowns, was problably the best blocking RB ever. He ran over you, around you, past you, he had shakes, and power. He threw touchdowns, and he was actually the Bears backup punter and kicker. He still holds the record for most yards from scrimage. 21,000 and something. Payton invented jumping over the pile. Coach Hill had him doing it in practice while he was at JSU (JSC then) Walter Payton never had a good offensive line until the end of his carrer. They drafted 1st round OL pics in like 83,84, and 85. He did all of this with garbage teams during the majority of his carrer. Walter Payton never had the opportunity to play with a good QB or recievers.

Barry Sanders was the best runner. Because of his elusive moves. However, that was all Barry did. Barry didn't catch the ball out of the back field, Barry couldn't block. They took Barry out on 4th and goal and 4th and short situation.

Jim Brown was awesome cause he was like a men amoung boys. When he played the leage was like 75% white. That's slow white boys. Not only that, he was way bigger, faster, and stronger than everybody. However, Jim Brown played on good teams, with good QB's, good FBs, and Good O-lines. Jim Brown actually refused to block for anybody. He took playes off.

Emmitt should be considered one of the best. He did all of the things that Walter Payton did. However, he had the perfect system: good supporting cast, great offensive line, good QB, great Recievers, and a great blocking full back.

All of these guys should be considered in listing the greats, but Walter Payton was the Best: end of discussion.

I'll agree with evrything you said, except this one:

Barry Sanders was quick. And that quickness made him elusive.

But the best pure runners in the NFL were Eric Dickerson, OJ Simpson, Gayle Sayers, Roger Craig and Ricky Watters.... They all ran the exact same way. They ran 'straight-up' ala Michael Johnson. They ran like Gazelles. They all ran 'down-hill' all the time, and made seamless cuts. And they all lined up 7-8 yards off the ball, and hit the line in full-stride. And Eric Dickerson had a extra gear he hit after he got into the secondary.....

I give props to Emmitt for breaking Payton's record. But I dont' see Emmitt's record standing for a long time....If Jerome Bettis can lose 15 pounds and stay healthy, he might catch him. He's already over 11,000 yards and running behind a decent O-line in Pittsburgh.....
