"Leader of Kings"
I know most of you don't agree with it and think it's stupid but some of your arguments about 7 games being better for the "SWAC" doesn't wash. It's really only good for the individual schools.
Here's something I found that may help to clear this up for some of you. Now remember that the commissioner has been given the task of creating a revenue sharing plan.
This talks about tv revenue sharing but clearly relates to any type of revenue sharing.
II Competition, League Balance and Revenue Sharing from Broadcasting
Sports leagues tend to be dominated by a handful of leading clubs that compete for the league title and a tail of less talented clubs that make up the league. A key factor that determines the overall success of the league is league balance or competitive balance.
If the gap between the dominant and lagging clubs in the league becomes too large then a significant number of league matches become too predictable and the absence of strong competition leads to unexciting games that attract less spectators. It is not difficult to see that in an unregulated league there is a tendency for imbalance to develop.
The leading clubs have larger gates, charge more for individual seats, sell more supporters' merchandise and can command higher prices for the broadcasting rights to their matches. These revenues can be reinvested in the club via the purchase of more talented players which serves to maintain and enhance the club's dominant position.
This inherent tendency to league imbalance results in one of the peculiar economic problems facing sports leagues, namely that while in most industries competitors are not adversely affected if their rivals go to the wall, in the case of a football league where the product supplied is the joint product of the clubs that compete in the league, a certain number of competitors is required for the league to function at all. Moreover, there must be a certain degree of league balance if the league is to prosper and viewing figures are to be maximised.
