The Most Balanced Sound in '06? JSU!!!

T-Made. You're one of the few Boomers I'd want to have a drink with, bruh. You tell it like it is.

Still a JStanker, doe....:vomit:

:)

You?ll JSU Alumni are weak, if you?ll protest and write letters to your President like you'll did when James Bell was Head football coach instead of posting comments on internet, Liddell probably would be history,

Their not the only one that needs to write a letter cause Mr. Jackson also needs to be history. In his first year of being HBD the band took a turn and it wasnt for the good. Not trying to be sarcastic just telling the truth.

Apples v. Oranges. There is a lot more to a band program at a university than marching band. In fact, I dare say that while marching band is the most visible and directly lucrative in terms of revenue, it is the least important phase of developing the program. After all, how many marching band jobs are there versus music education and music performance? About the only jobs for marching band are writing drills, composing arranging music, and those in DCI. Producing musicians and educators is really what the program is about at JSU. In that, Dr. Liddell is excelling.

I will agree that the director of bands does not have to direct the marching band. It is rarely the case at bigger schools with larger instructional staffs that the DOB directs the marching band.

Translation: If the money were there and things had been done right, Dowell Taylor could have remained director of the Boom while Liddell came in DOB. Think about THAT one.

You are right about one thing though....if Doc was there the band wouldn't have been at Zulu.

Psycho & Diggs ... please go back and read the premise of this thread. I really thought this one would be full of positive posts about each band or fans being critical of their own bands on how they might improve.

I tend to agree with the part about the Big Band sound not being as prevalent as it used to be, but still that identity is there.

The BOOM used to be more percussion oriented, now it's become more balanced with the sax's, woodwinds and horns.

su's sound still seems to be more treble oriented whereas JSU's sound is more bass oriented. Those two separate identities will perhaps never change at either school and don't need to.

But just imagine if BOTH schools played together, with each school emphasizing it's strengths, JSU with the bass sound and su with the treble sound, with the directors tweaking the sound just right where one is not overpowering the other.

Wouldn't that be a thing of beauty to behold
?

....maybe as a fundraiser for HBCU's or for sickle cell? However a lot of director ego's and fan ego's would have to be convinced of this.

I think it would sell because it would be for a good cause in SPITE of some oversized egos that may hate on it.

 This is some very good reading!!!!
Balanced sound????
I believe that a band can be balanced even when the instrumentation is off.
Grambling is almost always bottom heavy. The lower brass is always killing the upper brass. All you have to do is arrange for the dominant section. When the lower brass don't have the melodic line,....you have to become a human equalizer and back the lower brass off so that the upper brass can be heard.
I agree with a lot of you that the sound of SWAC Bands have changed drastically to compete with Southern's brassy sound. Other bands have taken this power concept way too far and now we got to sit up and listen to hot distorted mess!!!
Come back home!!!!!
And one other thing,....arrangers are not writing the way they use to years ago. Today we write for the sole purpose of power and not color!!!!
That means writing a baritone part wayyyy to high and out of it's norm because you know the higher the pitch ,...the more it would be heard.
Then there's the unisom concept versus counter melody and fill ins. Unisom to me is like a big thick piece of meat between dry bread. I need some lettuce , sauce and something to wash it down with. You young arrangers can not write old school material with today's concept and expect people like me to appreciate it!!!!!
Please take a trip to your local music libraries and study how those arrangers constructed the music of that period.

This is true, but I think the majority of JSU Alumni care more for football than the band.
