I covered JSU football for the Blue and White Flash student newspaper during the Bell Error. The biggest problem I saw was that he totally changed the offense his first season even though he had a quarterback in Robert Kent who had put up some great passing numbers during his year with the likes of Tim Manning and others at WR.
Bell wanted to run the football and play defense, but the offense did not feature athletes that could do that. The Tigers paid for it.
After that, Bell was really stubborn when it came to his offensive philosophy when it came to making adjustments and adapting to the strengths of his players. And that really did not sit well with many of the players. I remember talking to several players on the team off the record and they thought Bell was a joke. They respected him as a man, but not as a coach during that time.
Then Bell goes with Steve Haren, a white JUCO transfer out of Cali to run the offense after Kent graduates. Not a good decision. He could not move well in the pocket and had a horrible arm. Haren was not a FCS quarterback at all.
Nice guy, but bad at football.
I could go on, but I tried to put those years behind me.
