American billionaires are showing off their farmland for elaborate hobbies, but a buying spree among the ultrarich risks pricing farmers out​


America’s wealthiest are snapping up huge swathes of farmland, and while some are using it for their elaborate hobbies, agriculture advocates worry the broader trend of the rich purchasing tillage is putting the livelihood of actual farmers at risk.

Billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Alexis Ohanian have effectively dubbed themselves amateur yeoman, putting the ultrarichs’ hobby of tending to the land in the spotlight. In an episode of the Idea Generation podcast published last month, the Meta CEO said he is working to create the perfect steak by raising wagyu and angus cattle on his ranch on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Called Ko’olau Ranch, the $300 million property has expanded to about 4,000 acres after he first bought land on the island in 2014.

“I’m very into the genetics of the cattle,” Zuckerberg said.

Investor and Reddit cofounder Ohanian offered a tour of his family farm in Jupiter, Florida, in a LinkedIn post on Thursday, showing off banana shoots, an herb garden, and apiary. He has owned the farm for six years.

But these ventures are tiny compared to the ranchlands, timberlands, and cropfields many one-percenters are nabbing. According to the 2025 Land Report 100, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates owns 275,000 acres of land, the 44th most of any American landowner. Meanwhile, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has 462,000 acres, and Stan Kroenke, Los Angeles Ram owner and husband to Walmart heiress Ann Walton Kroenke, owns 2.7 million acres. Neither Zuckerberg nor Ohanian crack the top 100 landowners.

Carney says US asked ‘too much, offered too little’ as trade talks collapse 👍 👍 👍​

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday vowed “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs in response to the United States’ 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods after the two sides failed to reach a trade deal.

Carney’s tit-for-tat measures, set to take effect on September 8, will include tariffs on steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, paper and electronics.

“In recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much, and they offered too little,” Carney said Saturday at a news conference in Ottawa.

The White House has not responded to CNN’s request for comment. But in a Truth Social post early Sunday, US President Donald Trump said, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” He also claimed that Canada for years had charged American farmers “massive amounts” of tariffs. “No more!!!” he said.

Canada had offered some concessions as part of the deal, including removing its retaliatory measures from last year and returning US alcohol to Canadian shops. But the US did not agree to “sensible economic terms” for core industries, including automotives. And when asked about critical minerals, Carney said Canada would never give the US “exclusive access.”

The GOP is not going to stop as since fear of the unknown, hate and divide and conquer are the emotional base lines of their voters.

I honestly think the Democratic Party let themselves get caught up talking about it by bending over backwards to prove it is an inclusive party, and has struggled pivoting back to addressing broader audiences and issues since.

The GOP and their surrogates are trying to create a trans panic because Trump is underwater on every issue that matters to the public (war in Iran, economy, immigration, affordability) and his approval ratings are in the dumps.

All the Right has is fear-mongering trans and gay folks and applauding ex-NBA scrubs performing publicity stunts under the guise of "protecting women and girls."
