'It's over' for the Trump Organization if its CFO Allen Weisselberg pleads guilty, legal analyst and ex-prosecutor says

https://www.yahoo.com/news/over-trump-organization-cfo-allen-084044788.html

A guilty plea from the Trump Organization's former chief financial officer in the criminal tax case against him would spell financial disaster for former President Donald Trump and his family business, said a former top federal prosecutor on Tuesday.

The New York Times reported that Allen Weisselberg, a longtime top executive for the Trump Organization, is expected to plead guilty in a deal with the Manhattan District Attorney's office as early as Thursday.

He and the Trump Organization face 15 felony counts, which include one count each of scheme to defraud, conspiracy, and grand larceny. Prosecutors said the charges stemmed from a "sweeping and audacious payment scheme" in which Weisselberg avoided paying taxes for up to $1.7 million of his income starting in March 2005.

The Times reported that Weisselberg's deal would see him receive five months in prison, compared to a sentence of at least one year if he was found guilty in court.

"Once Allen Weisselberg pleads guilty, it's over for the Trump Organization," said Andrew Weissmann, a law professor at New York University and former lead prosecutor under Robert Mueller, on MSNBC's "The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell.

More than a dozen former top Trump administration officials have refuted former President Donald Trump’s claim that he had a “standing order” stipulating that classified documents automatically became declassified when he took them from the Oval Office to his White House residence, CNN reported Thursday.

Since the FBI searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort for top-secret materials that may have been improperly taken there, Trump and his allies have claimed, among other excuses, that the former president had a “standing order” in place that declassified them.

But, according to 18 officials from his administration who spoke to CNN, no such order was ever issued.

Several officials reportedly laughed or scoffed at the notion. One called it “bulls**t.”

Many of them even went on the record.

John Kelly, who was Trump’s chief of staff from 2017 to 2019, told CNN that “nothing approaching an order that foolish was ever given” during his tenure.

“And I can’t imagine anyone that worked at the White House after me that would have simply shrugged their shoulders and allowed that order to go forward without dying in the ditch trying to stop it,” he added.

Mick Mulvaney, Kelly’s successor, also said he was not aware of any such order.

Alan Dershowitz says every reputable attorney he's spoken with has told him their firms 'won't let them go anywhere near' Trump

https://www.yahoo.com/news/alan-dershowitz-says-every-reputable-184537570.html

Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer who defended former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial, told Insider that most reputable law firms weren't letting their attorneys go anywhere near Trump as his legal issues snowballed.

"All big-firm lawyers have told me that their firms won't let them do it," Dershowitz said in an interview. "The firms won't let them go near any case involving Trump. These are firms that want to continue to have clients, and they know that if they represent Donald Trump, they'll lose a lot of clients."

Dershowitz spoke from experience.

After he represented Trump in his second Senate impeachment trial following the deadly January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Dershowitz said he lost job opportunities and many of his speaking engagements.

"Everybody who has called me has shown reluctance to do it," he said. "They say their law firms won't let them do it. Their husbands or wives won't let them do it. Their children won't let them do it. Their friends won't let them do it, even though they want to do it."

Donald Trump and Mark Meadows' last-minute plan to declassify an FBI file and tip off a conservative journalist: NYT

https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-mark-meadows-last-114351503.html

In the final days of his presidency, then-President Donald Trump approved Mark Meadows's plan to get a set of redactions approved on a file of FBI information so that it could be declassified and handed over to a sympathetic journalist, per The New York Times.

According to The Times, former chief of staff Mark Meadows had Trump's blessing to seek out the declassification of the binder containing unreleased information about the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation.

Crossfire Hurricane, the code name for the FBI investigation into the purported links between Russian officials and Trump associates, became the Mueller probe in 2017.

The binder detailed the FBI's methods in the investigation. It contained a series of text messages between two former FBI officials, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, which had been disparaging about Trump, per The Times. The hundreds of messages sent in the lead-up to the 2016 election included a description of Trump as an "idiot."

Meadows reportedly dismissed concerns that declassifying the binder could compromise the FBI, saying that Trump wanted the messages to go public, per The Times.

Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Donald Trump launched a furious attack on 'broken down hack' Mitch McConnell and his 'crazy wife' in bust-up over GOP Senate candidates

https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-launched-furious-attack-121421042.html

Former President Donald Trump has launched a furious attack on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a dispute over the GOP Senate mid-term campaign.

Trump said the senior senator from Kentucky should spend more time and money helping Republican Senate candidates get elected and "less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China."

"Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

McConnell has drawn ire from Trump after he said that Republicans will face a tough task in flipping the Senate majority, citing "candidate quality."

Recent polling has shown that GOP nominees in the nation's most closely contested states are struggling to keep up.

This includes Trump-backed candidates Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, JD Vance in Ohio, and Herschel Walker in Georgia.

Trump and McConnell, who were once firm allies, have been publicly feuding since Trump's 2020 election loss.

Trump treated my family like disposable pawns and tore us apart, says daughter of convicted Jan. 6 rioter

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-treated-family-disposable-pawns-173118126.html

For Peyton Reffitt, 18, what began as debates around the dinner table ended with her family falling apart and her father receiving the longest jail sentence yet for his involvement in the Trump-inspired Capitol riot.

American family life in the age of Trump has taken on a toxic dimension, the young woman from Texas said.

Peyton said her family's disintegration started as angry shouting matches between father and children and was completed when her brother, Jackson Reffitt, then 18 years old, turned his father in to the FBI.

After the Capitol riot in 2021, Guy Reffitt, 49, returned to Wylie, a Dallas suburb, and told Jackson and then-16-year-old Peyton that they would be "traitors" if they turned him in.

But Jackson had already tipped off the FBI in December 2020, after becoming increasingly concerned by his father's radicalized right-wing rhetoric.

"We are an example of how the modern American family is becoming more fragile as the political climate rises," Peyton said in a message to Insider. "There is not enough protecting American families from the effect of propaganda and misinformation."
