Texas Southern: Hurricane Katrina Efforts

While, as I stated earlier Texas Southern University should be commended for it efforts. I believe it is important to point out the fact after speaking with our athletic director over several issues regarding the Labor Day Classic and other Prairie View athletic events, since this years event is under the marketing and management domain of Texas Southern University and their athletic director Alois Blackwell, Charles does not have the autonomy to make whole sale changes regarding the marketing and management of this event. In fact, Panther Backers, many Tiger Booster, and I have communitated our thoughts on merging the marketing and management of the Labor Day Classic to designated board of some sort and has of yet Alois Blackwell has not accepted this alignment. I (along with others) will continue to push this issue.

First Wilmer Hutchins closes it doors forever and now this... :smh:

I'm most certain that PVAMU will follow suit. I'm fairly certain that a more formal announcement will be forthcoming shortly. :) Good job w/ stepping forward TSU!

As for the game, I too find it interesting, to say the very least, that college students and their families only are given the entertainment venue w/out pay. :| It's not our home game so the $$$ and access, from what I was told, is solely TSUs. I'd be all up in Mr. McClelland's and Dr. Wright's arse right now if they did something like that but then again, it's not our biggest expected payday from playing ball either, so... Do the math. :|

Good job TSU!

However, I think the two schools (TSU and PVU) need to find some common ground about marketing the LDC. Seems like the two of you are growing further and further apart. Reminds me of the two committees fighting over the MLK Day parade in Houston. That's just sad. :smh:

As I stated earlier, I think that it is good that TSU did something. I don't understand why it is offered to college students only with a lot of people next door at the dome who would love to join in. But i'm sure they had their reasons. But we should not ask what is PV doing about the game because we have no control over the decisions being that we are the visiting team. I'm sure that we are helping in EVERY way that we can.

My point is this- TSU has done, is doing, and will do. Think about this, TSU has a burgeoning enrollment with limited physical space. With 11,635 students last year and that number is sure to grow this fall. Accepting displaced students is a financial burden on the university. However, we are reaching out.

This shows the amount of class that we have!

Regarding the stipulations on the tickets. TSU is offering free tickets and that is good. PVU is not the home time; however, that doesn't prevent your athletic department from purchasing 5,000 tickets to distribute to the evacuees. Have you thought about that? Everyone is saying what UH is doing- UH would get reimbursed because some sponsor will step in and pay for the tickets. So, don't make it seem like UH is this damn angel and TSU is the evil twin.

I also challenge those of you that have a problem with it- purchase some tickets, come to the game and pass them out to whomever you want to.

MESSAGE!!

Put up or SHUT UP!!

200 displaced students enrolled at TSU Thursday

Approximately 200 students from New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina have enrolled at Texas Southern University for the fall 2005 semester. The University opened its doors today to help bring comfort and relief to college students from Louisiana who were affected by the hurricane.

Due to the high volume of students inquiring about enrollment, TSU will hold a second meeting and enrollment session, Friday, September 2, 2005, 10 a.m. to noon in Room 243 of Bell Hall. Application fees will be waived. The University will also hire displaced faculty as required. For more information call 713-313-1059 or 713-313-7071.

For those students on financial aid, the University is currently working with the Department of Education for that aid to be transferred. For those students not on financial aid, the University will administer an installment plan.

Students are enrolling under transient status, which means they can be enrolled for one semester without a formal transcript. As for housing, there is limited space, but there are lots of opportunities for short-term leases off campus. Visit http://www.tsu.edu/about/trans/displaySingleMsgRpt.asp?id=542&type=1 for more information.

Here's a look at other efforts the University is undertaking to help the displaced students:

Friday, September 2, 2005?The Student Government Association is sponsoring $5 Friday: Hurricane Katrina College Student Relief Drive, Friday, September 2, 2005, 11 a.m. in the Student Center Pit. Please bring a $5 donation. Proceeds will be used to help the displaced students.

Ongoing?TSU faculty and staff have been asked to contribute $50 or more in a special fund created to support the relief efforts.

The University Counseling Center is offering the following assistance to displaced students and their families: To offer assistance, 1-800-HELP-NOW; TSU Crisis Helpline, 713-313-7863; To learn about loved ones, 1-866-GET INFO or www.craigslist.com; for evacuation shelter, 713-578-2055 or 713-957-4357.

The University is also providing free tickets to the Labor Day Classic for college students and their families housed in select shelters.

"The University is also providing free tickets to the Labor Day Classic for college students and their families housed in select shelters."

OK...

This is done for the fact that when you release a blanket statement that ALL Hurricane Katrina displaced victims are welcomed to attend the LDC opens a Pandora's Box:

Say 40,000 tickets are paid fans, alumni, students (we had just over 30,000 last year).

Remember, Prairie View finally won their first LDC since 1988.

Remember, earlier this week we were "10,000 additional tickets sold" from where we were last year at the same time. (Again, we had just over 30,000 in attendance last year).

This is due to the interest back into the game as Prairie View is competitive against Texas Southern now.

Reliant Center seats just over 70,000. That leaves 30,000 +/- tickets. So again, I say, if the university releases a blanket statement that "ALL" Hurricane Katrina displaced victims in the Houston metropolitan area are welcomed to attend the LDC would be mad chaos. Of course, right now, there are more than 30,000 displaced Hurricane Katrina victims in Houston, so if Texas Southern gives the approval to Reliant Gatekeepers to allow anyone with a Louisiana drivers license, school ID, library card, phone bill, license plate on their car, etc... Reliant Stadium couldn't hold everyone. Then guess what, there will be a mad stampede at the gates with people possibly forcing themselves in and next thing you know injury or possible deaths.

Thoughts?

I thank you TSU on behalf of my brother, a Dilliard student,
who will likely be attending TX. Southern this semester.
Now, that's being a good nieghbor.

Please give your opinion on how Texas Southern can make up from this travesty and insult that it has done.

CLeb,
Sometimes you just have to know when to walk away from ignorance. It does not matter what you say or do, you are wasting your time...You just can't agure with a fool.

I know it can be frustrating when you have someone half-cocked stating their OPINION, and what they HEARD and they don't have a clue.....

Cut your loses and try to spread the news to someone that will listen.

Texas Southern University is doing it's part to assist those displaced by Hurricane Katrina

NUFF SAID!!!!!

I think this thread can be shut down....Just my opinion though

The logistics of attempting to give away freebies is just unimaginable. TSU has gone overboard w/ respect to responding to the crisis @ hand. I have nothing but pure accolades for TSU and what the alums/univ has done to respond in a positive manner during this crisis. Beyond being over-humane. I have a much respect for TSU!

Some talk the talk while others walk the talk. :|

they are in the city.......want to increase enrollment.....and what a better way to do it....they are the only open admissions school in the city so it makes sense....

adding 3,000 more PV students would be hell logistically....it's hard to get around now so imagine more students in an unfamiliar environment....

at TSU...go to school....go home

Hey Fiyah....

Again, I ask:

What is Prairie View doing to support our displaced neighbors?

I forgot to answer this.....

Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

In addition to relief efforts by a number of student organizations and faculty and staff, Prairie View A&M University will accept students currently enrolled at accredited institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina, who meet the admissions requirements.

The Application and Late Registration Fees will be waived and students do not have to supply a transcript in order to be admitted for the Fall 2005 Semester
