TSU Quarterback Bobby Reid Featured on ESPN

New Texas Southern University (TSU) Quarterback Bobby Reid will be featured on ESPN?s ?College Game Day? airing Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. The feature will spotlight Reid?s football career at North Shore High School, his rise and fall at Oklahoma State University (OSU) and his decision to withdraw from the NFL draft and play his final college season at TSU. Texas Southern Football Head Coach Johnnie Cole will also talk about Reid?s impact on the team and how he convinced Reid to play at TSU.

Reid was a top quarterback at North Shore High School, where as a senior he led the team to the Class 5A Division I Championship. He was also named Houston Touchdown Club?s Offensive Player of the Year, and the all-Greater Houston, all-district and the district?s Most Valuable Player. In his senior year he accounted for 38 touchdowns, 22 passing and 16 rushing, and a combined 2,650 yards. Reid was also named to both the national and Texas Top 100 recruiting lists, and attended the prestigious Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in California. During his sophomore season at Oklahoma State, Reid had 2,226 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Reid was one of the 35 quarterbacks placed on the 2007 Manning Awardwatch list.

Reid: Gundy's rant "basically ended my life"

Problem was, Reid's body language was brutal. If an NFL scout had watched him this February, they would've closed their notepad and shuffled off. He had no fire, no swagger, no gleam in his eye.

But little did Reid know, a local coach at Texas Southern University had something in mind. His name was Johnnie Cole, and even though he'd just inherited an 0-11 team, he had a plan: Get Bobby Reid.

Cole had to sell Reid fast. He told him he'd tutored Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson at Alabama State, that he knew how to take a SWAC quarterback to the NFL. He told him he'd run a pro offense, with bootleg and play-action packages, that there'd be no gimmicky spread offense. He said, "You've got this cloud over you. They're questioning your heart. All it takes is a year to get it back."

Reid weighed it all, and withdrew from the draft. In the end, Cole -- a former QB at TSU -- promised Reid there wouldn't be a Zac Robinson looking over his shoulder. He promised he didn't drink Red Bull. Reid's smile resurfaced.

He was humble, too. Reid was once supposed to be Vince Young, but now he was practicing under goalposts that needed a paint job. Most would've turned up their nose at the opportunity, but Reid bunkered down. By the time spring practice began, this April 7, Reid was the unquestioned leader of the team.

"I've coached a lot of 'em, including Tarvaris Jackson, and Reid's special," Cole says. "I think he's going to be a first-day guy in the 2009 draft. If he'd left this year, he'd have been just a guy, so I think his decision to come back made him a couple million. He's got his swagger back. You should see that arm. The players are already following him."

He'll play this coming season against the Gramblings and the Alcorn States. But he probably won't be on TV, probably won't be on YouTube, probably won't watch Oklahoma State and probably ... won't read the newspaper.

"What I experienced up there in Oklahoma, something was taken away from me," he says. "Now I'm just trying to get it back. There was talk out there that I was soft and all that crap. But I just want everybody to know I'm not going anywhere. You can try to knock me down, but I'm standing on my feet strong."

It's just what he wanted to tell the co-ed at that party last year:

I'm a man. I'm 22.

I saw the piece on College Gameday this morning, and my respect for this Reid kid continues to plummet. All he did was get on TV with his momma (of course) and talk about how Coach Gundy did him wrong by putting him on the bench.

Nevermind the fact that his replacement, Zac Robinson threw for over 3,000 yards and 30 TD's last year.

Dude just lost his position to somebody that was better than him. That shat happens EVERDAY in college football! But he all on ESPN biitchin' about it. I'm starting to think that reporter was right about him.

Good luck, Texas Southern. :smh:

Dang.... :smh:

Here I was feeling bad for the guy...he had to have his coach stand up for him. But ESPN asked him and his mother why he left, and all he could say was that he lost his spot to a guy who went on to break the school's single season records and he felt "betrayed". If that's betrayal, then I'm quite sure that every coach in college football is a traitor. All "the rant" did was just magnify the situation to a national level, i.e. everybody reading the article, the Youtube footage. Reid was hurt because he had to hear about everywhere he went of how he lost his starting job. Hell, if I was Gundy, I'd have him on the bench, too.

Well, I see it as a win-win situation for us. It gives our new look athletic program an opportunity to make quick work of its resurgence.

This gives a once high-profiled QB a chance to put up some impressive numbers at a school that went 0-11 last season. I'm sure he was very disappointed in losing the starting job, afterall he was well sought out QB coming out of high school. I'm sure OSU and its staff promised him that the job was his until he graduated which helped determined his decision to attend. Futhermore, the decision to ignore his plea to play, I'm sure left a bad taste in his mouth.

Personally, I hope that he stays healthy and has a remarkable year.

Yeah I with you LS

This guy is shameful. GR knew something was wrong with him when he even thought about enrolling at TSU. That let me know that he had no heart. He seems to be a big baby being lead around by his mother. Then he stepped on the only guy that put his career on the line to try to stand up for his spoiled ass.

That says a lot about his character

Some of those comments from the ESPN article are brutal. Sometimes they can make our comments seem quite nice. That in itself takes a lot of doing.

Anyway, I missed the report on ESPN.

Did anyone catch Johnny Cole lying about putting Tavaris Jackson in the NFL?

Coaches lie alot to get recruits...How many people know where T. Jackson came from and are going to pull Cole's coaching record to see if he was a lie? Besides those interested in the Swac

You would hope Bobby Reid and his mom did. And this isn't a standard issue "you have a good chance of starting next year" lie. This is a gross mislead designed to trick a player.

Bobby is good young man. The man should have gotten his starting job back after an injury. I am glad Texas Southern was there for him. This is not unlike the the Tavarius Jackson story. He was playing behind a Qb that was changed to a wide receiver in the pros.

I do not have to defend him, he will do it for himself. Thanks for the bullentin board material.

Cleb,

You are too close to the story to see it the way we see it, but this ESPN piece did not paint a good picture of Mr. Reid. I've watched the cat since North Shore and I know he's a dynamic player, but I think ESPN sold the story to ya'll as a positive piece but reported it in a different light when it aired.

You are right. I am extremely close to the situation (so I won't go in detail with what they chose to NOT to mention in the piece) and I'll just let his actions on the field this upcoming season to speak for him. If I've learned one thing with the media and that's not to put too much faith in them period.

ALREADY!!!!!!

Not sure if you may have heard about the dog being HUNG in TEXAS CITY week before last but GUD was close to that situation.... Hell the news & newspaper came and got the story from the mother who claims she was bitten by the dog...... I called the news & newspaper to voice my side of the story because one lady stated she would help out the WHITE LADY because she wanted to get PAID.... TIL this day I have not seen the story in the paper nor has the news ran my part of the story.... These folks print and run what they want to and that is a SHAME.... IMHO they made him out to be a WHIMP and that was the HURTING PART ABOUT IT..... But you gotta be careful when it comes to the meida and the newspapers.....

I just don't see any reason for Reid to blame Gundy. In sports, at all levels, coaches yank players and fail to play players who probably should be starting. If you lose your position fight back in practice by showing up the starter. Win your job back. I also seriously doubt Gundy planted the story. A beat writer has many sources to find out what is happening behind the scenes. Some people on this board know what is happen behind the scenes at their universities. This was an opinion piece, so no real attribution was needed.

As for Reid, I think a change of environment will do wonders for him. He seems to be a fine young man, but often our young athletes get caught off guard by the business of college athletes.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the purpose of the piece was, but if it was to tell Reid's side of the story, it didn't do a good job. I know it was supposed to show how Gundy's "rant" was against an article that pretty accurately portrayed his feelings about Reid. But from the way it was written, it basically painted him pretty much like he was in that article, that he's injury prone, a little moody, not mentally tough, perhaps a momma's boy, even though that article was blatantly unfair. I think he got caught up in the cruel business of big time football, and ultimately lost his spot to a player who was better suited for the offense. I wish him all the success at TSU and hope this entire experience makes him a better person, but he really didn't do himself any favors by agreeing to this interview.
