Tests show world champion runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite

Re: South African Runner a Hermaphrodite

I can't believe some people are mocking this poor teenager for the way she was born. If she really has internal testes it's very possible that she didn't even know that she was a hermaphrodite. Now she's facing the fact that the gender she's identified with all of her life isn't exactly her physical gender. That has to be really hard to deal with, let alone having the whole world watching you go through it, and immature jerks making fun of you for it. What is wrong with people? What did this girl do that offends people so much that they feel the need to tear her down?

I agree that she grew up identifying as female, I’m sure she still identifies as female, it's unlikely that she knew that she was a hermaphrodite, and even if she did, she should be able to keep her record. She’s not any less of an accomplished athlete because she lacks ovaries. Should hermaphrodites be banned from competing in sports, period, because they can't be classified neatly as one gender or another? Most hermaphrodites present as a specific gender and they should be treated as such.

Thank goodness she has a good attitude about the whole thing.

IAAF urges caution over Semenya intersex claims

"She may be a hermaphrodite, but so what? She is still a girl," Stofile told a news conference in Pretoria.

Even if Semenya has an unfortunate "proportion of hormones," he said, she is still "a young girl enjoying growing up." Stofile said he believes the teenager's human rights have been violated and that she was not given a chance to understand what the gender testing was all about.

South Africa will fight back if Semenya is excluded from further competition, Stofile said, adding, "It will be a third world war."

All indications were Friday that, at the very least, Semenya may be able to keep the gold medal she won in Berlin.

"Our legal advice is that, if she proves to have an advantage because of the male hormones, then it will be extremely difficult to strip the medal off her, since she has not cheated," Davies told CNN.

Re: South African Runner a Hermaphrodite

This is pretty interesting, I wonder if Semaya could sue for discriminaion if she's not allowed to compete anymore....Hell, I wonder if any (knowing) hermaphrodite could compete in any sporting event?
