Tennessee State/SWAC

Hi...attorney here. Geier v Alexander was done for final order in 2006. It has no other subsequent treatment to its final order. That is...the order isn't in place anymore to affect what conference TnSU plays in or even how they enroll right now as long as it doesn't trigger new lawsuit for discrimination. No hbcu has discriminated by law or by fact to the level of barring non black American students from entry or matriculation. So, bringing up Geer doesn't make any real point about why TnSU in OVC makes dollars and cents for them. Carry on...

Adding a different wrinkle to the conversation in regards to the SWAC going FBS - and with apologies to MVSU, but has anyone thought of the possibility of adding Tennessee State to the SWAC as a 13th member and Valley staying at the FCS level? That would give the SWAC TnSU as a 12th FBS team and 13th in all other sports. Not sure if that's allowed, but definitely worth consideration. Win-win for the conference:

Eastern
Alabama A&M
Alabama State
Bethune Cookman
Florida A&M
Jackson State
Tennessee State

Western
Alcorn State
Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Grambling State
Prairie View A&M
Southern University
Texas Southern

All Other Sports
+ Mississippi Valley State

This is not meant as a slant towards Valley, but I have serious doubts about them being able to sustain at the FBS level without serious financial boosts. This way they remain in the SWAC as D1 member, and can benefit from the membership sharing, but also compete in FCS without breaking the bank. Whenever they are ready to move up to FBS, the SWAC could look for a 14th member to become a super-conference. MVSU could still schedule traditional SWAC rivals like JSU and Alcorn as FBS OOC opponents, and join another FCS as an associate member. Thoughts?

so it’s just f🤬🤬k valley huh? Ite don’t ask jerry rice school for nothing you ungrateful sons of b🤬🤬🤬🤬 I got y’all valley! Y’all leave valley alone now you here.... leave em alone!

Seriously, I wouldn't be in favor of Valley leaving anyway. Make a "super conference" and build it.

I dont get it either but distance isn't a problem.... its a 90 miles from Huntsville.... an extra hour isn't going to hurt anyone who already comes to Huntsville. I went there for two years....my mother graduated from there... and they seriously believe they are above everything else Black... They have that "we are better than any HBCU since we are in a white conference" mentality.... when they aint won shit in the OVC besides female track on a consistent basis. They have 2 OVC Championships and thats when the Cole brothers were there so Im not even sure if they count.
I mean aamu should be fine with it since y’all alum already be on tnsu campus more than at y’all own games.... fans really gone be at tnsu lol

Ay for the ones in here who know more on NCCA, scheduling, travel money, etc...just a real question.
Would TnSU SAVE in money if they were in the SWAC at all? And what about all sports? Do they field more sports than all our institutions?

they wouldn't save on travel... most of the schools in the OVC are close to each other. They would have to add baseball

You all are not an attractive opponent and really don't have any FCS conference championship pedigree. You just have that D-2 stench that runs folks away and that fact doesn't elude me when thinking about negatives TNST may tally when considering coming to the SWAC. If this was Burger King and I had it my way, I would have AAMU and BCU combine their teams when S.U. is forced to play one of the two and just count the game as 2 conference wins to save us a trip....LOL
Flat out cruel!

If the SWAC really holds onto East/West divisional formatting, then Tennessee State's travel would primarily be in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida with an occasional trip to Louisiana, Texas or Arkansas depending on the rotation.

So, they wouldn't necessarily save money on travel. The gamble is that they could generate enough revenue in football that would offset travel costs across the board.

And, like someone said, they would eventually have to add baseball.

Who says they have to add baseball? We have teams now without tennis or golf. Don’t make it harder for them lol

Tennessee st is closer to the Ohio valley than they are to the Swac however their fans only show up when they play HBCUs especially Swac schools.

My problem with TNSU is that we are so quick to talk about PWI schools when they play us for attendance, band, but what exactly is TNSU doing when they play JSU for a classic, SU (Detroit Classic) AAMU or UAPB (Classic) and FAMU (if they get back to the ATL CLASSIC or H2H.
Clearly they not making that much in the OVC to come asking for us to play them in all these Damn classics.

That fact is one of the reasons they had the city or state to upgrade their on campus stadium. The site of the paucity of fans in the Titan's NFL Stadium when they would play one of their OVC opponents was applauding!

OVC basketball attendance at TSU is pretty good ...... Nashville is like the heart of the OVC... so every OVC school has a big presence in Nashville and they come out for basketball .

their problem is they should've taken the Texas Southern approach and continue to maintain basketball up at a high level instead of trying to offset being good in football. Once they knew they were going to OVC they should've went all in on basketball considering there are basketball only schools and build football in phases. Even if football fails - you can get easy guarantee money but you have a winning basketball product to help keep interest

Our approach at Texas Southern includes that we are not land grant uni. We are essentially landlocked without mowing down parts of greater 3rd ward. And then there's how fast we grew in the 30s, 40s and 50s into a University, Heman Sweat decision and our state screwing us hard at the funding table. As a city, Houston does well for basketball. College football fans here can go either way attendance wise. UofH doesn't pack TDECU across Scott. They liked our arena for basketball, then complained to Fertitta that we had better concessions but didn't fill up their own stadium.
Idk what TnSU fans deal is except their grads go anywhere else more often than in Tennessee. So there goes a fanbase.
Houston...we have to win to get em in.
