Tennessee State/SWAC

Good post.....It looks like Coach Prime isn't the only one that needs a little indoctrination.....LOL

see there you go starting stuff LOL

but I want to add to the TV market convo. If TnSU comes over, they would be the SWAC school physically located in the third-largest market in the conference. As we know, Texas Southern and PV are in the Houston market while Bethune Cookman is in the Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne market.

@Braves4Life - This will always a be big talker when it comes to HBCU sports.

When FAMU & Bethune Cookman announced their intentions to join the SWAC, Dr Charles McClelland, was asked about Tennessee State. He said that NO ONE from TN State has contacted him in the past two years about joining the SWAC. He said that he’s always willing to listen but hadn’t heard anything from their athletic department.

One of the major reasons Tennessee State won’t leave the OVC is because of the contracts and the exit fee they’d have to pay to leave the OVC. $500,000 to leave with two years notice and $750,000 with one years notice.

in terms of conference expansion, historical rivalries with Southern, Grambling, Jackson State, Florida A&M and others

for money: Nashville is the 29th largest media market overall.

meh
I guess, maybe it's because they've been too disconnected from the HBCU football world to me.

There’s nothing scientific about a Twitter poll! We’re talking about Twitter.... I’m willing to bet that every school in that poll has a larger Twitter presence than tnsu...Perhaps

Why are so many people so obsessed with Tenn State being in the SWAC? I truly don't get it. They too far away imo
I don't get your logic, especially with you being an Alcorn St. poster. 1) Alcorn will be in the Western division and doesn't have to travel there every year. 2) Tennessee St. is a regional fit and traditional rival for most of the Eastern division schools (JSU, FAMU, AAMU, Bama St.), not to mention SU & Grambling. 3) It raises the profile of the SWAC by adding an additional high-caliber school, and bolsters our feasibility to eventually move up to FBS. 4) Nashville is the state capital giving the SWAC 5 out of 7 schools located in capital cities, and expands the SWAC's footprint in the south (ranked 28th largest media market) and presence in the Atlanta market. 5) TnSU is closer to all of the other SWAC schools than BCU is (outside of FAMU). 6) TnSU is usually top 25 in attendance for FCS. Based on 2019's attendance #s, the SWAC would've placed 8 schools in the top 30. Add in TnSU to the mix and those attendance figures creep up for all of the aforementioned schools. 7) Nashville is a 7 hour drive from Lorman, MS when your furthest Western division opponent (PVAMU) is 6.5 hours away. What aren't you getting?

They know all of that at Tennessee State and still rather be punching bags and hire admins who basically aren’t even going to seek a move. You look at their hires at the top - and if this president - a jackson state grad hasn’t made it a priority or won’t address it publicly That’s why I think there are back room forces who are pulling the strings.

the prez is running a college and the AKAs at the same time. Probably hasn’t even given it a thought

A jackson state former employee - ok

Teresa Phillips didn’t make it an issue and this new AD is a PWC grad from Tennessee. You think if your a hellraiser they’ll even consider you?

TNST Top 5 SWAC Members number of meetings through 2014
FAMU 53
Jackson State 49
Southern U. 41
Grambling State 41
AAMU 31
(worth noting Texas Southern 21)

Wasn’t Bama state president running deltas also at the same time?
One year TSU national alumni convention and AKA convention was in the same city at the same time (what a coincidence ).... Glover was rarely seen at the TSU events but she was pink and green at the AKA convention the entire weekend.

Lol - that answers the question - as long as the social butterflies get the JMC, Southern Heritage, a random hbcu game and homecoming they are fine.

Take away southern heritage and hbcus of value stop coming to jmc they’ll change their tune

If they don't care enough to use all this why should we?
I just don't think it translates like that. They haven't fostered any relationships with the SWAC

Damn it ... I’ll say it so we can close this thread down. Cfuk Tennessee State upity azz and let them stay where they at!

And why are they uppity in the 1st place? What have they contributed to the world? Some band stuff? A good football program? Oprah? Hard pass

Y'all need to stop trying to crucify HBCUs for doing what they think is in their best interests. Each HBCU has their own unique set of challenges to navigate through, nor is there a standard blueprint that HBCUs must follow. I believe Tennessee St. has not really entertained moving to the SWAC before because the benefits didn't outweigh the economics of their current situation. Them and FAMU were always a packaged deal to me, and until FAMU was willing to leave the MEAC those talks were dead in the water. I've said before on this board, I think FAMU coming to the SWAC changes the calculus for TnSU, and the sweetener in the pot would be if the SWAC officially announced a plan to move up to FBS. That would be enough to lure them away from the OVC, because no other conference could offer them that prospect. And let's face it, we need as many prominent D1 HBCUs as possible to make a SWAC FBS truly viable.

You get that with Tennessee St. being added to the SWAC as a 13th member. They check all of the boxes required.

Also, don't confuse the administration's position as being aligned with their alumni and fan base. They'd love to see this move happen.

TSU was courted multiple times decades ago. Rudy Washington was the most aggressive and said it publicly he wanted them and famu. Others have went after them and they keep acting like a woman who thinks they are too good for black men but will date below average White men.

They are happy being mediocre and watching their student athletes get their heads beat in. Let them have it.

Their head fb coach is from Texas and went to PV or worked there so he knows the swac but he has yet to say anything publicly. Wonder why
