SWAC spring football outlook

EAST

1st Alcorn 5-2 7-4

Battled a lot of injuries last year and have much of that talent coming back next year. Will have the hardest schedule being that they are the only team from the EAST that will have to face Southern, Grambling, and Prairie View. The good thing that Alcorn gets majority of its hard games at home. Alcorn will be in a lot of dogfights as I don’t see them beating any team on schedule besides Miles and MVSU by more than 14 points.

2nd AAMU 5-2 6-5

Spady is on his last year of his contract. He returns almost all of his starting lineup on both sides of the ball. He also has the easiest path to the SCG game being that AAMU doesn’t have to play Prairie View or Grambling. AAMU will have to show this year that they will have a defense and that is something AAMU hasn’t had since Spady has been there. The thing that will hurt AAMU is that they have to break in a new QB and the first half of their schedule is going to be brutal.

3rd Jackson St. 4-3 5-6

Tony Hughes is going to get Jackson St. back to being a threat in the EAST but Jackson St. loses a lot on the defensive side of the ball. The offense is going to improve some but not enough to win the EAST this year.

4th Alabama St. 4-3 5-6

Brian Jenkins is on his last year of his contract. I believe that Alabama St. defense will be legit but I don’t think he have enough offense this year to make a push for the SCG.

5th MVSU 1-6 2-7

Valley returns a lot of starters. Unless MVSU has an immediate fix to their OL and DL I see another long year for Valley.

West

1st Grambling 5-2 8-3

Grambling has lost a total of 2 SWAC games in the last 3 years. They return Kincade and Carter. Grambling loses more talent than any team in the SWAC mainly on the defense. I don’t see their offense being as explosive as it was last year and I don’t see their defense nowhere near as good as last year. I would be shocked if Grambling doesn’t return to the SCG but they will be in a lot of dogfights this year.

2nd Southern 5-2 7-4

Expect to see some improvement to Southern defense. Think Southern offense will take a small step back with losing so much talent on that side of the ball.

3rd Prairie View 4-3 7-4

Simmons will make sure that Prairie View won’t be mediocre but Prairie View have a lot of tough games on the road especially against Alcorn, Southern, and Grambling. Expect Prairie View defense to be a little better but offense will take a minor step back.

4th TXSU 3-4 4-7

Texas Southern lost a lot of talent this year especially on the defensive side of the ball. Mike Haywood will make Texas Southern a threat but he loses to much talent this year to overcome the top 3 teams in the WEST.

5th UAPB 2-5 3-8

Since beating Jackson St. in the SCG in 2012, UAPB has been 7-29 in the last 4 years in conference. To make matters worse, they have only won 2 conference games in the last 2 years and both of those came in overtime. Monte Coleman is on his last year of his contract. UAPB returns a lot of starters on both sides of the ball including their dangerous QB. UAPB will be better than they were last year but doubt very seriously that it will be enough to be a threat to unseat Grambling in the WEST.

Good analysis. I wouldn't be surprised if JSU finished next to last in the East. A lot of Unknowns.. We lost a lot of seniors from last year's team. An inexperienced Head coach doesn't make things better. Its just a wait and see for me. But I hope for the best.

Javancy is the only huge loss the rest were/are replaceable. I don't see losing a bunch of guys that have been 3-8.. 3 straight years as a bad thing lmao. I love the talent the staff is infusing into the program

Jsu also has to Face Grambling, Su, & Pvamu

tierre, you sure have a lot of faith in PV football to have them going 2-1 vs the southland conference. So which slc'er do you predict PV will lose to? sam houston st, nicholls, or iwu? All 3 are legitly strong, imho.

Watching a horrible rice univ last fall destroy and dominate PV has me thinking PV realistically going 1-2, if not 0-3 vs the southland conf teams. Hope I'm wrong though. And I hope PV addressed the OL/DL issues.

2-1 against the Southland but 4-3 against the SWAC. Lol...

I ain't buying that yall will finish next to last. Yall will have a rough start but I expect as the season goes, JSU will be a tough out. It might be good you lost a lot of Srs.

IWU should be a win depending on how your QB does. Nicholls is usually horrible 3 years, good for a year and a half, then horrible for another 3 years LOL so that could be a win also.

I'm not worried about receivers (Chambers, Simms plus McIntosh could be a sleeper). Every other position is open and we still need a RB and something that actually resembles an O-line. I might go to a spring practice and/or game but I won't put much stock into what I see because the JUCO guys haven't hit campus yet so most of the DL, OL and possibly QB could be new when we travel to Fargo in September.

You gonna be last bruh... like always..

Unless you manage to whoop AAMU again.

iwu has some pretty good talent. Not sure of the coaching/schemes they employ.

I'm slightly familiar w/ the nicholls cycle lol. They were upper 3rd slc last fall so hopefully we get them in their rebuild mode lol.

PLEASE tell me Willie Quinn is gone (I hope he get a shot in the NFL). He had/has the ability to score every time he touch the ball! A Jaguar great!

He thinks we will lose to Alcorn, SU, & GSU.

That differs from where I have us situated in the SWAC.

Losing to Alcorn, Grambling, Southern (None of those games at home)
Losing to SHSU OOC.
I believe that your team is good enough to beat UIW and Nicholls (2 bottom SLC schools)

Willie has graduated. Tillery has graduated. The guards and center on the offensive line have graduated.

Good analysis yourself, I think alot of of jsu fans are finally admitting the lack of head coaching experience & even lack of coordinator experience that coach Hughes possess . Guys like Hughes MUST have extremely strong coordinators. in which we are a little bit skeptical in that area as well. Ur also right about there being alot of unknowns starting with QB, OLINE then coaching. But we shall see. I support the tigers no matter what but I hope we get it right very soon.

He was good but the rest of the team was so bad that a player of his caliber made no difference.

I'm ready to see what our Future QBs look like in Spring ball. Also happy to have Brady Smith back in the secondary. He was sorely missed in 2016
