SWAC should do a feasibility study into moving to FBS

"Leader of Kings"
I know we have some weak teams and that some are struggling to get back to where they once were, but if you look at our numbers year in and year out, we area doing much better than a lot of current FBS lower level schools.

Pac-12 Championship Game: 45,618

SWAC Championship 38,969

Mountain West Championship Game: 26,101

C-USA Championship Game: 23,711

MAC Championship Game: 15,110

Thoughts. .

we will have the same issues unfortunately..why?

The only difference is we can command $900K or so to play Ohio State but unless you can take several SWAC schools with you with the right regional ties and get PWC rivals that draw, it's a tough road as your doomed to the Sun Belt to start off with and alot of them hate it...especially Texas State as they claim they can't get fans interested to see no school in the league

And that's exactly our strength as I see it.
(I could be wrong)

Just as they clamor to see an SU vs UL, GSU vs ULM, and a Alcorn vs USM now, we can use that to our advantage.

The reality is most PWC's still look at us as they did Eddie Robinson teams back in the day. They still are mesmerize by our brand and like anything that you're going to market, you need to hit it while the iron is hot and build off of that.

Yes. Hire me. I'll charge the swac a whole bunch of money to say: Until the economic situation of your alumni changes, you should never consider going FBS. Crazy how we have 3 boards full of HBCU grads, yet so many who don't understand basic economics.

I have used this example before. The most expensive ticket for the Atlanta Classic is $45 in the club section of the Georgia Dome. Yet we have folks who complain about the ticket price and suggest for the 100 to fill the dome they will have to lower ticket prices. ¿To what Free 99? The Chick fil a kickoff classic in the same Georgia Dome. $45 will barely park your car around the dome. $170 will get you in the last row of the 300 section. The cheapest ticket for the Peach Bowl in the Georgia Dome is $125. Until we can fill our own stadiums without having to travel to Atlanta, Memphis, Indy, etc, etc to get a crowd to come watch our band. Hell no. Any HBCU official that ask for this study should be fired, for being a dumb f^&* and wasting money WE DONT HAVE.

I find it funny that you bluedog aka uncle rukus is the one who proposed this question. I have been lurking/posting on onnidan/meacpage/swacpage since 1998. I can't think of anyone who has been more critical of TSU for having a football schedule filled with PWC. I keep telling you lost folks, there is not much difference between playing MTSU and Eastern Ill. Playing Troy is not much different then playing Jacksonville State. Yet you looking for respect from the yt people. This is one of the many reasons to me and a lot of folk on these boards you are a joke.

With budgets like this to compete with the top FCS or FBS School as far as operating revenue and meet Title IX requirements? C'mon Man

13 of 23 MEAC and SWAC schools had budgets less than $10 million in 2012-2013

Delaware State - $13 million - MEAC

Alabama State - $14.1 million – SWAC

Texas - $165.6 million – FBS

James Madison - $36 million - FCS

My company, THG Agency, LLC completed a 100+ page feasibility study on HBCU athletic programs moving their football program from FCS to FBS back in 2011 for a SWAC member institution. This document was shared with several HBCU NCAA Division I FCS presidents/chancellors and directors of athletics.

I bet that was the easiest study you have ever done to come up with the answer, ah hell naw. It could have been 1 page instead of 100+. Simply reading in bold. Thanks for the check, but NO.

Smile!

Just for clarification, feasibility studies do not provide a yes or no answer as I am sure you are aware. Feasibility studies provide data, requirements, scenarios, analysis, milestones, narratives, and etc.

Im sure you're not allowed to give many details (legal reasons), but what can you tell us the study found?

2Kool,

I will pull up the file tomorrow and view what I am legally able to post, such as related material for potential conference alignment, minimum suggested revenue associated with a conference alignment, and minimum scholarship requirements and associated cost.

Must you always be a simpleton? I'm trying to have a honest and open conversation and here you come with your usual stupidity.

You sit there and say I criticize TNSU for having to many pwc's on the schedule, then then around and call me a uncle rukus.

I haven't watch much of that series, but the little I have watch, uncle rukus disassociate himself from black folks.

Now how stupid of an analogy is that dumbass?

Secondly you're a lying son-of-bitch. I never once gave a damn about TNSU playing to many pwc's, they're in the ovc.

What sense would that make? DUMBASS!

Third: What I did ream your po narrow ass about. Was you bragging all the time about how superior the ovc is to the SWAC, but than turn around and accept welfare from the ovc, by allowing TNSU to play far more ooc games than normal with hbcu's, without penalizing them for not playing the normal conference schedule, so TNSU could make their budget.

What conference does that kind of shit? Let your dumbass tell it, it would be the poor segregated SWAC.

Next if you're going to try an insult somebody, at least know what the fvck you're talking about.

Back to our regular programming.

Why is it everytime we have a discussion about FBS, everyone's argument who's against it compare apples to oranges?

I thought I specifically said the lower tiers, aka Sunbelt C-USA.

If I didn't, I apologize for not clarifying.

What needs to happen before it is even a thought.
(1) Enrollment - we need to get our enrollments up to 10,000. The 3 smallest state supported FBS schools are Arkansas St. (13,000), LA Tech (11,500) and ULM (8,900). 10,000 students will give us an enrollment and alumni base that will support being in FBS. It should also give us an athletic budget around $12-$14 million and a football budget around $5 million. The only ones close to that is Texas Southern, Jackson St., Prairie View, and Southern. ULM has the smallest athletic budget at $11.2 million
(2) Attendence - we would need to average 15,000 fans per game. Also we need to have our stadium hold atleast 30,000
(3) Salaries - We would have to greatly increase our salary pool to be FBS. We would need atleast $300,000 for the Head Coach, $150,000 for the coordinators, and $75,000 for the position coaches. That would make our salary pool be $1.2 million. That would be at the bottom of FBS
(4) Ticket prices - In order to maintain we would need to get ticket prices to $25 for GA and $35 for reserved. That would be a $5 increase to those who go to Alcorn games. I quite sure SU folks already pay that now if not more.
$35.00 Reserved
$30.00 30-40 Yard Line
$25.00 20-30 Yard Line
$20.00 Goal Line to 20 Yard Line
(5) Scheduling - We should play at least (1) FCS, (1) BCS, and the rest on our level.
(6) Recruiting - we would no longer be fighting for level 3 recruits but level 2 recruits.
(7) Revenues - Your revenue should come from your tickets sales and student athletic fees, donations, etc. If your school is heavily subsidizing your athletic program then you will be in the same boat that UAB is in.

Delaware St. and Alabama St. heavily subsidize their athletic departments (Robbing Peter to Pay Paul). Either their students are footing the bill (high SAF) or the school is footing the bill. The athletic budget is way too high to justify for the enrollment numbers.

Correct and if you peel the banana back at other FCS and FBS schools, student fees are footing the bills especially for conferences without major media rights deals.

Not a bad idea! But the SWAC has to get it's season ticket sales up!

If right now you were to look at just the SWAC that got some of the pieces that could make for a possible move I would say

Southern (consistent attendance, stadium over 20K, loyal fan base)
JSU (big stadium, loyal fanbase, enrollment approaching 10K)
PV (enrollment, new stadium coming, location)
TSU (modern stadium, enrollment, location)
Alabama State (modern stadium/facilities)

I would have said ASU last year or the year before but now I would probably say either JSU and/or SU. Looking at the athletic budgets of the Sun Belt schools, you would probably need at least a $12-$13 million budget to even be considered in addition to the standard things (add more sports (Title IX), coaches salaries, etc.)

And that's exactly our strength as I see it.

I am on the fence with this one. Back in the day Coach Rob did not play ULM, Tech, or LSU because there was a mutual agreement between them. Doug Williams often used th eexcuse of "they didn't want to play us then so I'm not playing them now." Well the truth of the matter was that this agreement amoungst men. At that time back during the time Doug was in college our teams could have won what is now the BCS Championship. This is especially true if our teams had competed prior to white schools allowing black students.

Yet, I feel your point.

The State of Louisiana would shut down LSU before La Tech. This may sound crazy but it is true on so many levels. You have to live here and know the culture to see what is happening. I know this is not about who stays opened or closed but the fact of the matter is La Tech is loved so deeply until it is ridiculous. Case in point my mother is President of the Lincoln Parish Police Jury and whenever they lobby for money for the parish at least two representatives from La Tech are there. This is with companies, the state, feds,a nd foreign entities. Those folks at Tech know how to GET MONEY.

It shouldn't be a thought as of right now. We as HBCU's have to clean up our own house before we ever think of making a move like that. In my Roger Cador thread (which I encourage everyone to listen to), he spelled it out for you. We don't have the alumni endowment support, the students we attract are going the Community College/Trade School route, and students that don't give two cents about athletics cause they're at our schools to get a EDUCATION (Which is a bigger number that you think, I'd say 75%) will go bananas over having to pay increased fees for these programs.... Title IX is just the sprinkles on the icing on the cake.

In short, we better get it together before our schools become JUCO factories.....

But to me there could be one solution.....

SWAC/MEAC Superconference...... and say fugg the NCAA...... Hell, it's just a name anyway... Why stay with the pimp when you can be your own boss.

Money....We do not have the money...Yea we have an HBCU Brand but how has that significantly helped our pockets? End of discussion!
