He was not referring to the tourney.

Many of our conference teams do not make sensible schedules but rather sell out their progams to make money. One thing I have admired about S.U. program is very seldom we will schedule a non-conference out of state foe unless they are willing to return the trip to Baton Rough. This is not the norm for many of our sister colleges that prostitutes themselves for a few dollars. I like the way Hampton U put together their schedule also (scheduling PWC that were winnable). If you are an avid hbcu sports fans Jobes statements should be crystal clear.
 
Why is JOBE *****IN about Birmingham? Southern wont be there anyway. The championship game will be a SELL OUT because AAMU and Bama St will be there. The bball tourney was in Biloxi and it was empty. I saw it on TV. IF they are goin to ***** about locations just have it at the home gym of whoever wins the regular season championship. We have had plenty of SELL OUT SIAC tournaments at AAMU. Alcorn, AAMU, Texas SO and BAMA ST are the only major SWAC basketball schools. Most schools dont look foward to basketball season. At AAMU basketball is way far more important to the students and fans than football is.
 



My remark was not intended to say that Birmingham was a bad place, just that it not the home of a SWAC school. If it had been in Baton Rouge, there definately would have been TV coverage. I am sure this true of several other SWAC cities. Second, Birmingham is a pretty good haul from most SWAC Cities unless you fly. It is definately not a central location. No one gets excited about going to Birmingham.
 
On the real, I would like to see the games played on campus, but oh well. The tournament was on television last year... well the champsionship game was. With AAMU and ASU having good teams, Birmingham is probably the best way for the tournament to get a crowd. With this being AAMU's first year eligible, they will take a crowd regardless. AAMU is a basketball school where most other schools are football schools. AAMU and ASU probably average more fans than any other schools in the SWAC.
 
Someone had a thread about the attendance for the 2000-2001 season and Bama State lead the way.I can not remember who was second but I do not think it was AAMU.I think it was PV or ALCORN.
 
ESPN or ESPN2 always carries the SWAC's championship game. They do it as a part of their "Championship Week" package. They've been doing this for a long time.

I didn't attend either of these (only one in Bham), but, does anyone recall how the tournament was when it was played in Bioloxi, MS? What about when Bama State hosted?

Can anyone give specific examples of the pros and cons of each site and which was the best?

Bham may not be 'home' to a SWAC school, but neither was Dallas where the tourny was for 2 years or Biloxi - and I went to the tourny when it was held in both of these cities and again it was nothing to write home about. It is INCUMBENT UPON THE SWAC OFFICE to make this a must attend event - whereever it is held. Those of you that are greek will attend your National Convention because you know you are going to have a good time regardless - because of the fellowship. That is what needs to become of the tourny - and the SWAC Champ Game. That is the atmosphere that should surround these events, where ever they are played.

Bham people will support this, but African-Americans are pretty much alike in ALL CITIES. Dont take us for granted, and give us the info in well enough time and we will be there. But the SWAC has taken us for granted - and last year look how long they took to even say the tourny was goin to be in Bham. To follow that up, instead of gettin media here hyped about the tourny, when tourny time comes all the media will remember and focus on will be the sorry ass media day and all the coaches remarks.

The office has a lot of work to do. And I feel pretty much the same as Coach Witney. The office is in turmoil - and the Council of Presidents are of no help whatsoever. The mindset of the SWAC office is that when this mess is over with Rudy, then we will move forward. But you dont know when that will be over and you cant let one man hold 10 schools hostage. We have to move on, and we must WORK harder than ever before, because credibility has been damaged.

Ain from Birmingham, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. It aint the citys fault.
 
SWAC & THE MEDIA

The powers that be at the conference office need to realize that unlike the their counterparts downtown the SEC, we have to work for our coverage.

I think it is great when you go down to Baton Rouge, Jackson, and Grambling at how the community seems to support those insitutions.

The SWAC Basketball Media Day was a joke. I was very disappointed at the way it was handled. Kudos to Coach Spivery for not dodging the bullet and letting all know how he felt. A friend played for the Univ. of Alabama and when he heard about how much of a joke it was for in Birmingham, he couldn't believe it.

I know that we are not the SEC and probably will never have the sponsorship that the power conferences have, but we need to realize that this conference main objective is the student athletes of our institutions. It was appalling to see that the conf did not have any media, any gifts for the athletes, or any organization. Our athletes that attended were upset because they missed classes the week before mid terms for nothing

One day maybe will be able to get our stuff together.

I attended the entire tourney in Biloxi. The first two days, attendance was sparse. However, the semi-finals and finals were attended very well. Alcorn, JSU, and SU were very well represented. Alcorn, by far had the largest contingent. I think Biloxi is a good home for the tourney. The beaches and the casinos provide more entertainment options for the fans. Bottom line is we need to select a location, stick with it, market the hell out of it, and let it grow. Given a chance, the community will embrace and accept it.
