Southern to host Grambling in three-game set

First-year Grambling coach Barrett Rey is hoping his homecoming to Lee-Hines Field this weekend will translate to his team.

The Tigers play well at home but are lousy on the road. And this late in the season, they need some wins to make next month?s Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

Grambling (15-26, 6-12 SWAC Western Division) ? which is 2-20 on the road ? is in a three-way scramble for the third and final slot with Arkansas-Pine Bluff (10-26, 6-12) and Texas Southern (10-21, 6-9).

Southern (19-12, 12-6) hosts Grambling in a doubleheader of seven-inning games at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lee-Hines Field.


The teams play a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Southern and defending SWAC champ Prairie View (24-17, 12-3) are on solid footing to make the tournament, with the top three teams from each division qualifying. SU and PV meet next weekend in Texas.

Meanwhile, Grambling has only one divisional series remaining after this weekend, hosting Texas Southern May 5-6.

Are we the only teams playing on Friday and Saturday I know I read some where the coaches wanted to play on Friday and Saturdays...............Oh well the Friday night games in Jackson have been great so far

I would love Friday night games. I remember Cador pushing for a 3 day(3 single 9 inning game) weekends like the sec, but the coaches wasn't having it. I even remember him saying that the BR hotels offered to cover the extra lodging. We really need to get away from those 7 inning games.

The SEC, SLC, ACC, B12, C-USA, SunBelt.

You know most schools don't have the pitching to cover 3 9-inning games. :D

This should be a great weekend..I'll be at the game's..GSU and Coach Rey are pushing hard to get SU Lab catcher Tyrone Brinson..But T wants to be a JAGUAR :jump:

You can never get enough talent, but the jags already have a pretty good young catcher who is a freshman. I'm not sure how talented SU lab catcher is, but if he wants to play immediatly he'll be looking towards GSU.

I'll say this Tyrone is sooooooooo good LSU is after him also..Last night he hit a rocket 355ft..

right...catchers are in high demand...if he wants to play right away, GSU would be a better option

but, GSU has had great success recruiting Baton Rouge in all sports so all it will take is a campus visit and ultimately $$$$

The only player to play in ? and start ? every game for the Southern baseball team this season is the one SU coach Roger Cador never got to see in action until he started playing.

And playing a lot, as things have turned out.

Junior left fielder Juan Mendoza came to Southern from Oakland in January on the recommendation of his junior college coach, Contra Costa College?s Marvin Webb, an infielder in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in the 1970s who had played against Cador, then with the Atlanta Braves organization.

?Here?s a guy, in January, we didn?t know anything about,? Cador said. ?Never saw him play.?

Start No. 32 comes today for Mendoza as SU (19-12, 12-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division) hosts Grambling (15-26, 6-12) in a doubleheader of seven-inning games at 1 p.m. at Lee-Hines Field.

The three-game series ends with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Both teams will don uniforms from the Negro Leagues for the series, in which first-year Grambling coach Barrett Rey returns to SU, where he played and was an assistant coach, for the first time.

Juan is an oustanding athlete! I said that before, but watch he grow into being a leader in the tournament or maybe even next year. Dude, is very capable! :tup: :tup:

My friend,that would be a surprise..Tyrone is closer to me than any other Lab kid..Not that I would tell T not to go 55 N,thats his choice...But he calls me about everything..
