SWAC APR

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

If this country had a worthwhile major media, many more stories similar to the reports about UNC men's basketball would be reported.

Let's just be honest with ourselves. Our students need to go to class and graduate.[/B] It seems that our institutions want to blame x, y, and z. Yet, fail to acknowledge the mistakes of A...which is the student. Furthermore, this is not a HBCU problem but a university problem PERIOD. Students, coaches, and university administrators see dollar signs.

Also, having worked in a compliance office at an SEC school, the larger schools have their problems as well. Athletes, coaches, and administrators pay heavily in order to get their student athletes to pass. I know five instructors who receive season press box tickets for football games at three SEC schools. It's all about the $$$$ at the end of the day.

Honestly, it will be difficult to resolve this problem.

Few people want to talk about these.

this is what we resort to....we want a coach to win games but your better athletes ain't thinking about class...so you get those guys in and they kill your program but coach is still fired

you get academic all-americans who can't run fast but they go class, post high APRs but lose games....your still gone as a coach (Anthony Jones)

what's your solution?

The P5 conferences basically are cheating...alot of these athletes are technically not enrolled at the schools...they're under a "in-house" JUCO taking classes under the school umbrella as they're admitted "as a special admit"...the better athletes can leave early now and not get hit with APR points....they'll also string along a academic minded walk-on for 2 years and offer him a scholarship for his final 2 years to boost numbers

Few people want to talk about these.

ESPN (Disney (throw ABC into this as they fall under the Mickey Mouse umbrella) is in bed with these schools so it's in their best interest to not harp on these issues until they just can't ignore them anymore (outside of Outside The Lines).

A few on here gloss over it as well (because some have ties to these schools as well due to advanced degrees (or other reasons))

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

So yall want to be able to skate the system like the big boys? What happened to the we care more about black athletes mantra?

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

Y'all know most athletes won't go to class unless people like Snoop Dog, Little Wayne, and others are attending those classes. :emlaugh:

At one time our kids used to look up to college professors, now they look up to rap artist, just because they have made a lot of money from rapping about the thug life.

Huh? WTH you talking about man. Most athletes go to class.

Re: NO MORE EXCUSES

Initially, I complained about APR issues, however inspite of that JSU stepped up to the plate and our AD made it a priority to attack our APR issues head on. When she made it a priority at the urging of our President, that was half the battle.
Once our President got on board, it was a done deal. She tied their income with APR progress. Money motivates unlike anything else.
There's no reason why other schools can't do the same.

In that case, we shouldn't have an APR problem in the SWAC and this topic is a mute issue. But for whatever reason or maybe an attack on my post, it does appears you are double talking.

Just being real, all this sounds like excuses. They can take they azz to class just like we did and pass.

I went to class, DMJ went to class, Cleb went to class, DCG went to class and most athletes go to class apparently or APR would be hitting the majority of schools.

You named 4 athletes out how many during your era? But why did you initially say "they can take they azz to class" in the post below? We are talking about college athletes? IMO you didn't like my comment that most or more athletes would go to class if rappers attended those same classes.

Just being real, all this sounds like excuses. They can take they azz to class just like we did and pass.

:lmao::lmao:...Pop, why did shit have get so bad for the "HBCUs care about black athletes" black folks before they realized it's all a plantation?

Re: NO MORE EXCUSES

Man, screw these schools if they don't take it serious. What? We suppose to feel sorry for them when they don't care? Let the NCAA kill them with the death penalty. And they can keep talking that "low resource" bullisht all they want. The NCAA will get tired of hearing that just like I am. Screw'em, We Ball!!

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

It might improve it by a small degree....MIGHT but the real issue is people just aren't graduating on time. Like with bama state, why do you not offer summer classes for student-athletes? Also bh, coming from a student, it is more difficult to have online classes than to go to a class-room in my opinion. I avoid online classes let alone try to get an online degree simply because you have to make up for not being in the class with a shit load of work!

I agree 100%!!!!

We have too graduate on time! Period! We have to do a better job of emphasizing the importance of councilors actually doing their jobs and monitoring their student athlete's progress.

I'm sure universities can afford to hire a few counselors that can track all student athletes progress. It shouldn't be that hard to follow a course curriculum, determine the student athlete GPA, and determine what is required for the student athlete to graduate within the required time frame. A simple Microsoft Excel spreadsheet should be able to keep track of the necessary data on each student athlete. If a student athlete is in their junior year of playing sports, but needs 100 plus semester hours to graduate in his or her major, a red flag should immediately go up, which means they would have to take 25 plus hours per semester in their major during their Junior and Senior years just to graduate within 4 years. And if 6 six years is the maximum requirement, these student athletes need to be monitored closely for the remainder of their college career.

Re: NO MORE EXCUSES

NCAA Release APR Statistics, Low-Resource Schools Struggle While "Power Conferences Exel
According to the Associated Press, the top Division I programs did fine, but the problem is schools outside of the five "power conferences" are struggling. 36 NCAA DI programs are ineligible for the upcoming postseason for a poor Academic Progress Rate (APR) and not one is from a power conference.

Of the 17 men's basketball and football teams banned from postseason play this year, 8 are from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Both teams at Alabama State and Florida A&M face a postseason ban.

"While the low-resource institutions are overrepresented among the population (postseason bans) we're talking about today, they've made improvement, they've made significant improvement as a group," Walter Harrison, chairman of the NCAA's committee on academic performance, told the AP. "They're just starting at a lower spot. We're trying to help them with some advice and some financing."

FYI for the seriously slow, that mean the other 9 (over fifty percent) aren't HBCU's

Re: NO MORE EXCUSES

Jsu is down to one compliance person..not sure about step up..

And our scores are higher than a lot of these ass backwards schools that have more than one person? And we suppose to feel sorry for them? Screw'em!!!! May the NCAA grant them ALL a slow death.

You know our schools only want to hire 1 person to do all of that and at a low pay grade. That's a lot fo work for 1 person. You need a decent size crew to handle all of that with 16-20 plus teams.

If a student is a junior and still needs 100 hours he probably has already screwed up your APR because likely has either failed a bunch or dropped a bunch of classes in a given semester.

The largest factor in APR is semester to semester eligibility and retention.
