Swac 2012 Football Attendance - Week 11

Re: Where have the fans gone?

the average black in Jackson, Montgomery, etc. should flock to SWAC games as most of them are from the area and tied to the school as opposed to the average black in Texas..but even in those diehard cities things are changing as they're not packing the stadiums as the offspring aren't attached to the cities/ schools like our parents were

Re: Where have the fans gone?

Jackson State had won its last three football games and was playing for the SWAC East Championship and the weather was perfect for a football game on November 10, 2012. The announced attendance for the Jackson State/Alabama A&M game was 8,445.

Where have the fans gone? I had a discussion with some JSU fans yesterday and here are some of the reasons they gave for the decrease in attendance at JSU football games:

1. Ticket prices ($30 for game day is too high, some fans decide game day if they are going to attend the game)
2. Kick off times are too early
3. SWAC rules doesn't allow the band to play like they used to and the games are boring (got to give non-diehard football fans a reason to attend the game)
4. Fans left the game during the Bell era and have not returned
5. SWAC teams are not winning
6. Casinos

Average JSU home attendance from 1987 to 2012:

1987 – 32,734
1989 – 32,269
1993 – 34,100
1995 – 34,849
1997 – 38,873
1999 – 28,933
2001 – 29,067
2003 – 18,196
2005 – 15,686
2007 – 16,117
2009 – 16,334
2010 – 24,140
2011 – 23,166
2012 – 14,462

How do we get the fans to return to JSU/SWAC football games?

Tickets prices are too high for a 60,000 seat stadium, empty seats are not a scarcity.
