Supreme Court curbs protections for whistle-blowers
Alito casts deciding vote in a clear sign of the panel's conservative shift

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court scaled back protections for government workers who blow the whistle on official misconduct Tuesday, a 5-4 decision in which new Justice Samuel Alito cast the deciding vote.

In a victory for the Bush administration, justices said the 20 million public employees do not have free-speech protections for what they say as part of their jobs.

Critics predicted the impact would be sweeping, from silencing police officers who fear retribution for reporting department corruption, to subduing federal employees who want to reveal problems with government hurricane preparedness or terrorist-related security.

Supporters said that it will protect governments from lawsuits filed by disgruntled workers pretending to be legitimate whistle-blowers.

Samuel Alito must be out of his dayum mind!!! This takes the integrity right out of the workplace that a whistleblowing worker may be trying to preserve. This makes no sense to me.

OK....................The Supreme court has given cities the right to SNATCH your land and now you basically have no protection when reporting abuses in the workplace.:xeye:

But abortion is the MAIN TOPIC and end-all issue for the media.:p

It is not fair to just pick out Alito there was four others that went this way. You knew what kind of bench it was going to be the minute that W. won the election. This is kind of votes you will get for at least 20 years. I am not who is the youngest Alito or Roberts.
