Editor?s note: This is the first in a weekly recruiting series of the area?s top uncommitted college football prospects for the 2007 season. Today: Clinton?s Prentiss Waggner.
CLINTON ? Clinton football coach Robert Signater shook his head in disbelief.
The small rural school in East Feliciana Parish found itself becoming a destination to college coaches from some of the nation?s top programs when the Eagles conducted their spring workouts more than two months ago.
The featured attraction?
Cornerback Prentiss Waggner.
Coaches from LSU to Florida to Minnesota clamored along Clinton?s sidelines to get a glimpse of Waggner.
The traditional tedious period became a rather memorable time for the younger players on the team awestruck by the collection of coaches from some of the game?s top programs.
?It was a big deal,? Signater said. ?He (Waggner) allowed an opportunity for a lot of players to be seen that may not have been seen by big-time institutions.
?He?s probably one of the biggest recruits in Clinton in a long time as long as I can remember. I think it?s good for the town, and it?s good for him, because he?s going to help many people. He?s helping put Clinton on the map.?
The rise for the Waggner, 6-foot-2, 178 pounds to among the nation?s top defensive backs has been meteoric. He is now ranked 16th nationally by Rivals.com.
