Stewart selected as West Virginia football coach

West Virginia defied the odds by defeating ?mighty? Oklahoma at the Tostito?s Fiesta Bowl. Bill Stewart is no longer the ?interim? head coach of West Virginia. He is now THE head coach of West Virginia, and everyone is happy?

Well, make that ALMOST everyone is happy. Ken Kendrick, wealthy alum/booster of WVU, has criticized the move. Here?s the direct quote: ?He is so overmatched it?s not even funny,? said Kendrick, managing partner of Major League Baseball?s Arizona Diamondbacks. ?He?s a nice guy and a father figure. But they had a wonderful architect and they hired the painter to build the next house. I want Bill Stewart to win and I want our program to be successful. But I feel bad for our future. I?m very concerned.?

Thanks for posting this Jafus. I heard this on ESPN. Even ESPN made mention that it was a cheap hire so to speak.

I have to agree with the booster/Alum. He makes the same point I am. That was an emotional hire and homeboy discount for WVA. Looking at the bio of Stewart, I think he will be overmatched as well. Especially with coaches leaving to go with Rich. Position coach to Head Coach is not usually the path with BCS coaches. His only stint as a Head Coach was at VMI were he did poorly. It is going to be real interesting. I still think Rich is going to go after the same recruits that are interested in WVA, since he knows them already.

There was a quick reference to an incident of him making a racial slur towards a Black player when he was head coach at VMI (i think)... it said that the investigation proved it was nothing to be concerned with (or some type jargon). Did anyone else here that?

yeah but Mike tomilin(Steelers Head Coach) said it was no big deal and was happy yesterday. He worked with him at VMI and he said it was a great day.
I mean he is from WVA so he was raised with some of those old school beleifs anyway. Even rodriguez was but people can change. I hope.

I did not hear that one. I would assume if Pat White and those guys like him so much, that he has never done anything like that around them. Stewart did mention he learned his lesson from that coaching experience at VMI. Sounded like he didn't handle situations well at that time.

Yeah I heard Tomlin said it was a great day. After all he did get his first job from Stewart at VMI. Like I said, we'll see if he turns out to be a Larry Coker when Rich's players are gone. He will be fine the next couple of years unless he can't coach at all. Just going to be interesting to see what kind of staff he assembles. He is making 1.2 million less than Rich was. Which means his assistants will not make as much as Rich's assistants did there. I am sure Cal and others will bolt to Michigan and other places. Neither coordinator will stay after being passed over for coach by a position coach. Now we will see if the WVA success was Rich R and staff related or not.

I am sure Wannstadt and others in the Big East are happy Rodriguez is gone.

Well the exact quote, aimed at a black player who was showboating, was, "Don't let your actions give people reason to call you a n-----." Not the best choice of wording, but not exactly the racial slur it's being made out to be.
